RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2021 I spent yesterday cutting out sets of steps to go between the road under the bridge and Station Road. Once the side walls have been added it will be interesting to work out how I am going to fill in the rest of the embankment. 12
Tortuga
Expanding foam then cut to shape, cover with papier-mâché and flock?
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 6, 2021 The steps have now been covered with Scalescenes' brick papers. The next job is to bed into its place. 25

RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted May 6, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2021 Really excellent work Jonathan. It's good to see you back modelling again. Regards Lez.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2021 Thanks @chuffinghell & @lezz01. Takes a lot to keep me from modelling long. I've moved the wing wall near the steps as it looked all wrong and will incorporate it in with the steps wall. A big chunk of foam will fill in the area between the steps and Station Road.
RMweb Gold 5BarVT Posted May 6, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2021 I had thought that ‘combining’ the wing wall and the steps might look better. Look forward to seeing the result. Paul.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 6, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2021 I actually thought the wing wall and then the steps next to it gave the impression of different phases of building, with just a dark rubbish-filled gap between them, It's amazing how much that happens in reality. However, fantastic job on the steps mate, they look really good. Al.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 7, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 7, 2021 The wing wall has been redeveloped and is probably not as radical an alteration as I first suggested. It is separate from the step wall but is now higher and seems to help support the step structure. Now with added "rubbish" in the form of low lying shrubbery. The static grass has arrived from WWS so there could be some grassing over the weekend as the forecast for Saturday is rubbish, so I doubt I will be needed in the garden. 20
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 8, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 8, 2021 The area between the bridge and Station Road has been filled in with foam and a layer of vinyl grass mat covers it, followed by a base coat of flock. The embankment on the other side has been treated to 2mm and 4mm static grass with some rougher stuff next to the cess. An overall view of progress so far.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 9, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 9, 2021 I have now scenic-ed the other side of the bridge and will leave at that for now while everything settles although the ballast could do with patching where the slide out section meets the fixed boards.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 9, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 9, 2021 This evening marked a milestone in my recovery from surgery a month ago now, in that I have had my last daily blooding thinning injection to prevent DVT. To celebrate trains have been run over the decorated bridge slide-out section. 1P propels the branch shuttle towards platform 1 while 3FT uses the up mainline as a head shunt while reversing wagons into the goods yard. A moment later from the other side. Two moments later the push & pull is signalled to cross to the up line. 27
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 15, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2021 For good or ill I've made a start on point rodding using mainly ModelU products. Here is the start of a run of rodding which will "operate" 12 turnouts although there're only 5 rods. 4 are crossovers and are operated by one lever and the Midland used economical facing point locks. Here are the main lot of cranks mounted on sleepers opposite the box. The Midland used gas piping for rods although for the photo my rods are square section as they look smaller being black than white plastic rodding of similar size which I will have to paint first. Static grass gets everywhere. 16

Signal wires - no. There may be an odd pulley and chain though. I suggest a visit to Specsavers (other opticians available) first before attempting point rodding. A 2-roller, a 3-roller and a crank.
MrWolf
I was thinking of putting in the support posts and pulleys outside of the box. That's it. I'll have to work out the most prototypical rodding runs possible for my fictitious layout! What you have built looks neat and logical.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted May 16, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 16, 2021 More work on the beginning of the rodding runs. Rods have been made from 0.5mm rod painted Humbrol acrylic 5012 then rubbed over with a graphite stick to give a metallic appearance. Bends have been put in with narrow pliers. The line of shine on the rods makes them look thinner too. The crank bed has been glued down although it needs more ballast to stop that floating look. Although I've removed no end of static grass with tweezers more has evaded my eyesight. The 6 foot has been boarded over for the PW guys. As most rods and wires cross the tracks there was no need for a lead-off bed next to the box. Just one crank on this side on the left which operates the 2 bay to up main turnouts which forms a crossover and the facing point locks. 22
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 18, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 18, 2021 (edited) The first turnout has been connected up to the box. A compensator converts the pull into a push to allow trains to go through the crossover. The camera has focused on the track. The rod will continue to the FPL then on to the other turnout and FPL forming the crossover. The stool beds will be partly buried in ballast. I don't think so Lez. Deflector ramps will be put in place where the FPL equipment should be. 1
