New Trains to get Longer Numbers

Recommended Posts

Do the numbers have to be a uniform size for stock (especially that NOT leaving the UK), as I can see what the approach would be then...

If you follow the link a the foot of the page I linked to there is a more detailed explanation https://www.rssb.co.uk/Pages/improving-industry-performance/rail-vehicle-numbering-explained.aspx

How many people were paid ludicrous salaries, and provided with free first class travel and luxury accommodation to get together on numerous occasions, in order to come up with htis kind of over-regulation?

If the opponents of Brexit want to know why the UK voted for it - they have the perfect illustration here !!!

We now have a Europe-wide elite who have a vested interest in telling the rest of us how we should do our jobs, whilst making what we do harder and more expensive.

It can't go on - sooner or later those who actually do productive work will have had enough of the parasites who exist only to make life more and more complex.

I'm glad that I am finished with the working environment, and those who exist only to regulate it.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

Could have been worse, they could have insisted that the "numbers" be displayed only in a Bar Code or QR Code format - now that would make trainspotting and the recording of "numbers" more of a challenge.

Already been done as an April Fool in the 1981 Railway Magazine ISTR - a bar-coded 56 at Toton

That could make it easier - just point your smartphone at it and instruct it to underline the number in your virtual abc.

The second paragraph states-

As of 1 January 2018, all new trains, whether carriages, wagons or locomotives, as well as all existing trains that operate across borders into Europe, must display a new standard European Vehicle Number (EVN).

Which could be read that only trains which cross borders need to carry the full (UIC) numbers and not internal stock.

Isn't this the standard UIC numbering that has festooned Trans Europe Expresses (and indeed the Night Ferry stock towards the end of their service) since the days when Methusulah was a trainspotter?

In which case what on Earth has it to do with the EU or Brexit? UIC was around long before we joined the EEC, and as has already been pointed out, Iarnrod Eireann have been putting UIC numbers on their stock for a while now and the chances of them reaching Calais are well south of zero. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter?

[edit] Perhaps now we understand why the new IEP units were stretched to 26m. The extra 3m is for the UIC numbering.

Two-character meaningful code for the owning or operating company? Not a good idea!

Why?

If you look at the link in the OP, explaining the proposed system, you'll see they have used as an example "PB" for Porterbrook. Fine - people will easily associate the code and the name. Then a new company enters the business of railcar ownership - Parker Brothers. They can't have code "PB" because it's already in use. So they have to be given a code which doesn't really reflect their name - what would that be? Do you give them the 'next' code - "PC"? But what happens when Persephone Company enters the field - whatever code you give them, will people remember "PC" is Parker Brothers and not Persephone Company?

Then, what happens once you've used up (in whatever way) the 676 possible two-letter combinations and the 677th company from a country arrives, wanting to join? If you don't think that's likely, look at the list of AAR reporting marks for North American railcar-owning organisations.

So - do not build significance into codes where you are likely to get duplicate codes according to the allocation rules you're using. And allow for a requirement of at least an order of magnitude beyond what you think is 'reasonable'.

IMO, that part of the number should be 4 numerics long, with codes being allocated sequentially - computers can translate the codes very simply if needed.

Absolute rubbish!

UIC standard numbering has been around for decades, and any British vehicle working into Europe carried its UIC number, for good and sensible reasons. A considerable amount of European rolling stock works all over Europe, and somethimes beyond. For us, it is more relevant for freight stock, and as the RSSB note itself states - The majority of existing trains in Britain are not likely to need to run in mainland Europe, and these won’t need to have the new numbers displayed on the side - although they will still need to be allocated a European Vehicle Number for identification in continental vehicle registers.

That won't change with Brexit, and it's naive to think it will.

Nothing new here, just the UK finally catching up with the rest of Europe (and as pointed out above, some of these interoperability standards long predate the modern EU). I'm sure there were similar moans when TOPS numbers replaced the 'traditional' loco numbers....

The full number is generally in use on modern wagon stock

For example

today I photographed a stone from Tunstead - Norwich Trowse consisting of 17 MWA all with 81 70 5892 xxx-x numbers. It's only likely intercontinental travel was when it was delivered.

The MMA used on the Eccles stone and the sugar stone to Norwich RFD use full numbers

etc. etc.
