The Border Reiver
It's still the 4th August 1968 and the second of the steam specials we saw that ran that day. Here are Black 5s 44781 and 44894 at the head of 1Z78 the Stephenson Locomotive Society (Midland Area) Farewell to Steam No.1. Again, can anyone confirm the location?
RMweb Premium Popular Post Chris Turnbull Posted February 6, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 6, 2018 A few more today... 48348 at Carnforth on 9th July. 44803 at Manchester Victoria on 17th April. 48423 coasts downhill at Hoghton on 11th July. 75027 at Rose Grove on 10th July Chris Turnbull
Popular Post Trev52A
Two more shed scenes at Carnforth from the final weeks... 44809, 45025 and 75048 on view on 20th July. I didn't make a note of the Co-Bo - anyone there that day who may have the information, please? 75019 (I think) has a water top-up alongside 44709 on 1st August. Of the five Standard Class 4 4-6-0s which were all withdrawn from Carnforth in August (according to the RCTS book) I have narrowed it down to probably 75019. Anyone (Chris?) got a photo with a similar view of the tender to make a direct match? Cheers Trevor Edited to confirm loco number must be 75019, as per my post #331 Edited February 6, 2018 by Trev52A

Trev52A
Could be. It's under the ash plant in post #265. It's the other side but the lining on the tender is there. Chris Turnbull Thanks Chris. Yes, I went through all your uploads and saw that one but I couldn't be certain from that angle. However I think I am on solid ground with my reasoning, which is (going from the five examples which Carnforth had at the end, as per the RCTS book ).. 75009 was stored with a bag on its chimney as in several of your views. 75020 was in the scrap lines as per your post #161 (and it was supposed to be green, anyway) 75027 was green 75048 had the double flashes on the tender back So voila! it must be 75019 I have added the correct number to my archives so I will not have to worry about it any more! Kind regards Trevor
RMweb Premium Chris Turnbull Posted February 6, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 6, 2018 Interesting that 75009 was in amongst the preserved locos with her chimney sheeted up rather than on the dump - makes you wonder how close she was to being rescued? That's an intriguing point. I must admit that I had assumed that 75009 was preserved but obviously not. According to the November 1968 Railway Magazine it was withdrawn in the period up to 10th August along with 75019, 75020, 75027 and 75048 and was cut up at Campbells of Airdrie by 30th November 1968 according to this website: http://www.railuk.info/members/steam/getsteam.php?row_id=21699 I've been trying to find out more information but have drawn a blank. Can anyone else shed any light on this? Chris Turnbull

RMweb Gold russ p Posted February 6, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 6, 2018 Mention of the CO-BO in an earlier post was it obvious back then that they were about to be withdrawn and what was the reactions to the withdrawal of several NBL diesels before steam had ended? RMweb Premium Northmoor Posted February 6, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 6, 2018 Love the shots from Manchester Victoria. I never knew there were other locos still active by the 4th August '68, so seeing the Std. 5 and the 8F is a surprise. Re: the Std. 4s at Carnforth, wasn't 75048 scheduled for preservation? I remember my Dad's 1968 Combined Volume listing it in the Preserved Locomotives section, although it obviously never was (unless Ian Allan accidentally recorded a member of the Strategic Reserve....). RMweb Premium Popular Post Chris Turnbull Posted February 8, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 8, 2018 (edited) Sadly, I've now reached the end of my colour slides of steam locos so here's the final installment: 44709 enters Carnforth on the morning of July 10th. About mid-morning my friend and I set off for Rose Grove where 48493 is seen struggling out of the yard. In the evening we returned to Carnforth where I captured 44897 in the dusk. The next day the DMU to Morecambe failed and was towed away by 44735. 45134 is the other loco. A rake of coaches was found and 45268 set off with the delayed 9.51. If I had realised what was going on sooner I might have had time to buy a ticket. As it was we went to Hoghton where 48493 was caught in the evening sun. And that's it. Thursday 11th July was the last time I photographed a BR steam loco in revenue-earning service. On Friday 12th I set off back to Bury St Edmunds via Leeds and Doncaster. My notes show that I saw 45330 and 44735 that morning at Carnforth but I took no photos. Too upset, I expect. Still, I had a wonderful few days in the north-west and count myself lucky that I was able to record the last days of BR steam. Little did I think that fifty years later I would be posting scans of my colour slides on a forum called RMWeb (all those capital letters together with no full stops!) on something called the internet... Mind you, I didn't think I would be a grandad either! Chris Turnbull Edited February 9, 2018 by Chris Turnbull

The Border Reiver
4th August 1968 again and the third and final one of the steam specials we saw that day. Here are Britannia 70013 and Black 5 44781 at the head of 1Z74 the Locomotive Club of Great Britain The Farewell to Steam Rail Tour. This tour was perhaps unique in sharing motive power with another being run on the same day, the Stephenson Locomotive Society (Midland Area) Farewell to Steam No.1. After detaching from this tour at Blackburn, 70013 ran light engine to Lostock Hall to await the arrival of the RCTS tour
