TCtrains73138
Hi all, I though that as I am about to start building this layout, I should make a thread about it. Redminster is a fictional layout set in the south west featuing a terminus station, freight depot and TMD. At this moment in time, this layout is only plans but these plans are pretty much set in stone. They are as follows, OO gauge using Peco 100 track. The baseboard will be made from plywood which I will make myself. It will be end to end. Length = 7ft Width = 4ft Moveable/Transportable = Yes Will be set in the sectorisation era of BR with the year being around 1989. It will have a terminus station which will feature 'mainline' trains and a small bay platform for a heritage railway. Also will have some station sidings, freight depot/terminus and a TMD. Will be DCC and will be controlled using a NCE 524-042 NCE Power Cab. Locomotives will mainly be diesel with 1 steam engine (probably a 14xx) for the heritage line. So I guess you now get the idea of what I am aiming for with this. Once building is complete and once scenery is too a good enough standard, I hope to take it to a few exhibitions/shows. Feel free to suggest anything that I could add/implement in this layout. Thanks, Tom. Edited December 13, 2017 by TCtrains73138
luis18artist
For some engines i recomend you a balance between Old Diesels and some new Ones for example if you have a Class 08 you should have also a Class 20 A very basic engine its the Classes 40 or

I will probably also have a class 08. Thanks for your input, Tom.

Its a great pleasure The Class 08 are very basic shunters in any BR Layout And for the DMUs i recomend you a 101 Old but reliable

RMweb Gold jamest Posted December 15, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 15, 2017 Sorry for the double (now triple!) post. I'll blame the computer.
RMweb Premium JDW Posted December 15, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 15, 2017 7x4 is an odd size, more suited to trainset-type roundy-roundy than terminus station, if you're talking about taking it to exhibitions I'm guessing that you might be aiming for a U-shape with scenic section at the front and hidden sidings to feed it at the back? 7 feet isn't that long, especially with modern stock, so you might find you'll struggle to get in any "mainline" trains. For a modern DMU or Mk3 coach, you're looking at a foot per vehicle. For older stock, slightly less, but even a 2+2 "trainset" HST will be 4 feet, a loco with 3 mk2 coaches slightly less, plus station pointwork, curves, etc, will quickly fill the space. It looks a lot until you add trains to it! Sometimes, less is more, and trying to squeeze in too much track will look cluttered and leave no room for anything else. A stabling siding or two for locos might be better than a depot building which can take up a lot of room. A parcels platform long enough for a couple of BGs might provide another reason to have loco stabling and another reason for shunting. I look forward to seeing the layout develop though... Thanks for your input. I'm sure you read that this will be set in the late 1980's so will probably be mostly loco hauled stock. I do have plans for rolling stock. As this is my first layout (and I am only 14) it will hopefully give me some knowledge for future developments of it. I am glad to hear that you are looking forward to seeing it develop! Thanks, Tom. Of course. It's much cheaper to watch other people's layouts develop than work on mine From my avatar, you can probably guess: the more DMUs the better :-D but I take your point. Smaller locos work better on smaller layouts, as well as being more realistic, so things like class 20s, 24/25s, 33s, etc are easier than long locos like 40s, as well as being more likely to be seen at smaller stations/yards.
