RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted November 2, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2017 (edited) I have some very sad news. Earlier today, after a period of illhealth, Peter Clark died peacefully at home. It's very hard to summarise in a few words what Peter has done for themodel railway and model engineering hobbies. Peter's primary modelrailway, or rather railroad, interest was in American narrow gauge andhe was an early practitioner of Nn3. He is also well known fororganising the machine shop demo which appeared at several of theModel Railway Club's Easter exhibitions.Peter was a frequent winner of gold medals at the Model Engineerexhibition and typically of Peter, he kept the certificates on thewalls of the smallest room of the house! Many of us have benefitted directly from Peter's generosity of timeand expertise. He advised on many 2mm Scale Association projectswhere engineering input was required. In his professional life, Peter was a much respected member of themedical professsion. We shall miss him greatly and remember him with much affection. Heleaves two sons and to them and their families, we offer our sincerecondolences. Edited November 3, 2017 by 2mmMark
JohnBS
Dear all, Very sad news. I remember Peter as a quiet man, a brilliant engineer and the proud designer and maker of the "Mangle" which still produces the curved fiddle yard track for Copenhagen Fields. That was a mechanical tour de force. He will be sadly missed. John
RMweb Premium Kylestrome Posted November 6, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 6, 2017 (edited) Definitely a sad loss to those who knew him and to 2mm scale modelling as a whole. I am one of the many people who benefitted from Peter’s helpfulness and generosity. I well remember the couple of occasions when I was allowed the freedom of his workshop facilities at the old IMREX shows. I still have the bending bars that I made there, which caused much amusement because, in my innocence, I had chosen to make them out of some pieces of copper tungsten. Not the ideal material, but they have nevertheless lasted well. Peter was always innovative and was good at finding ways of building affordable tools or improving existing ones. He once made a new tool post in aluminium and brass for the plastic Unimat 1, which I showed some interest in because I also had such a lathe. Without asking, he then produced a second set of parts for the tool holder for me and refused any form of payment. This was typically generous of Peter. On another occasion, I sent him an e-mail asking him where I could source some Delrin rod. I received no reply but a few days later a little package dropped through my letterbox, containing a quantity of said material and a note asking if there was enough! Peter also made some small batches of specialist tools for 2mm Scale Association members, including a miniature marking gauge and a shooting board for chamfering styrene sheet. Both of these tools I now consider to be indispensable and are still very much in use. In future, when I pick them up, I will always be reminded of a humorous, inventive and kind man. RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted November 6, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2017 One of Peter's innovations was the " 'fonly Lathe" which made ingenious use of a minidrill to produce a small workable lathe. http://www.lathes.co.uk/fonly/ Mark
RMweb Premium CF MRC Posted November 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2017 Peter’s efforts are literally what holds Copenhagen Fields together. My abiding memory of Peter is that whenever finishing metal work, always make sure the scratches are in the same direction! Tim
RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted November 21, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 21, 2017 Last week, I was able to get a picture of the famous "mangle", designed and built by Peter to form the strip track used round the back of Copenhagen Fields. Without this, making the fiddle yards would have been very difficult. Mark
bécasse
Perhaps it needs an "In memoriam" plaque added?
