RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 21, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2017 (edited) Oh, you'll like this one!! So there you are, sitting by the carriage window, staring out, watching the world whizz by. Tree, hedge, field, overbridge, station, tree, hedge, field, overbridge, station, tree... After a while they all start to look the same, as if the world is a circle, just endlessly passing by in front of you... Over and over and over again... RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 21, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2017 The main view will be as if looking forwards out of the window. This area will take up just the front right corner of the board, the remainder will be for the rotating scenery. The bonus is the circle of scenery can be replaced with other scenes - wild west America, Swiss Alps, etc...

So that might mean Native Americans voluably objecting to the Iron Road crossing their sacred lands Outlaws trying to rob the train, waving their Colt 45s at you Lonely goatherds. And so on... Think of the fun you could have devising a soundtrack and sound effects to go with each scene... Oh Noes!!!! I've just had another brainwave too!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tref
Did they ever make record players for 7" vinyl only? Could be a good starting point - although with alternative scenes, perhaps a jukebox... Undulating scenery - sounds like a good use for those records that were left out and warped! Tref.
Liam
Sounds a great idea though. Re soundtrack, I'd recommend 'Ticket to Ride' by that very famous Merseyside band: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=70-WSgZn1MQ

At 45rpm it would have to be a TGV carriage window!* *other high-speed trains are available!

My gramophone also has the 16rpm "Talking Book" speed, a bit more sedate.... But if you want a Bullet Train, you could always use 78rpm!
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 21, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2017 I won't be using a record player, or a CD player, or anything else... probably.

I like this Stu. It puts me in mind of the BBC interlude "Wheels" made by Bob Symes. If you go with this, one of the most characteristic parts of the view should be the rise and fall of the telegraph wires...

The simplicity of hand power would be preferable I guess, but the rotation would have to be at a pretty constant speed to maintain the illusion. idd15
Hamster? Nah only three speeds, bonkers, "I've lost it", and thud! idd
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 28, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 28, 2017 The rotating table will be supported on a central spike, the circular base will rest on a rubber wheel on the axle of a slow rpm motor. Thus replacing one scene with another will be very simple.

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 28, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 28, 2017 Yes, I guess so. I remember cone shaped roundabouts which could swing as well as turn, just appearing to be suspended from a single point. Hopefully the spike idea will prevent any need for complicated bearings.

What about something like a microwave turntable, with a central spindle fitted with dogs and a larger idler ring round the outside?

Not a good idea. Dogs explode in microwaves.

RMweb Gold Hroth Posted October 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 28, 2017 It just clicked..... "From A Railway Carriage" by RL Stevenson Faster than fairies, faster than witches,Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches; And charging along like troops in a battle,All through the meadows the horses and cattle:All of the sights of the hill and the plainFly as thick as driving rain; And ever again, in the wink of an eye,Painted stations whistle by. Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,All by himself and gathering brambles; Here is a tramp who stands and gazes; And there is the green for stringing the daisies! Here is a cart run away in the roadLumping along with man and load; And here is a mill and there is a river:Each a glimpse and gone for ever!
