This advert for Marshall car batteries is also railway themed. It was filmed on the Castlemaine and Maldon Railway in Victoria The car is an XD Falcon and the locomotive is a Victorian K class 2-8-0 No. 160. "Holler for a Marshalls"

I know the person who was driving K160 for this ad. On the first take the car didn't get out of the way in time and the loco clipped it. There was damage to car but it wasn't visible from the filming angle. For the second take they did it at low speed then sped up the film.

Cheers

That's a great story and I hope the bloke makes a big success of the venture. Having said that, he must be mad, eccentric or possibly both! It will take a particular type of person, a hardy soul, to live out there by yourself. I cannot imagine the physical and social isolation that living in such an environment presents. Fingers-crossed he gets plenty of trade just from folk visiting from a novelty point of view!

Its on one of the routes to Birdsville so it is on a bit of a tourist trail. There are other properties in the area, its just that they are rather large so they are a bit spread out. Price per acre sounds like a bit of a bargain, til you realise how many acres there are in a property...

Curious that the listing you linked to would show the property in flooded condition. Makes you wonder how often the homestead floods. And curious to see a price in "$ per acre". The listing (properly) does so in Hectares. I guess a per acre price sounds cheaper?

I guess the pics were taken  after the floodwaters from the recent Nth Queensland rain made their way south.  Up until then it had been years of drought so its probably a good time to sell while everything is lush and the dams are full rather than just a dry red dusty landscape as per usual.

I remember seeing signs nailed to poles saying "Land $5 an acre" when I was driving west from Brisbane through the Darling Downs to the Surat basin oil fields a fair while back. I wondered at the time if they'd sell me one acre!

More information here.

It says something that treatment for the pain involves dousing the affected area in hydrochloric acid.

I can attest to the ferocity of a plant that looks very alike to the one in the 'suicide plant' photograph.

I was warned about them. I did my best to avoid them, but one was overhanging a trail in the Lamington National Park where I had to clamber over an obstacle and I accidentally brushed, not a leaf but the tips of the very fine hairs. I don't remember if the hairs actually penetrated the skin. I can't say it was the Gympie Gympie (not gimpy) for certain but it did look the same. Yes they hurt and it raised nasty welts for the very slightest of touches. I was not however tempted to kill myself.

I came back from the same hike with a tick behind my knee.

The waterfall at the end of the trail was quite stunning.

So a plant to watch out for if I go Bush Walking..

I suspect you won't find it outside QLD. The species I encountered would be in QLD or northern NSW. Gympie Gympie seems to be located in Cape York and the Townsville area. It's possible I encountered something slightly different but those filaments on the leaf look exactly the same. This was well over 30 years ago. I recollect the leaf being more shaped like an ace of spades, but could be wrong.

Based on the range I probably encountered either Dendrocnide excelsa or Dendrocnide photinophylla.

The roads in Australia can be a real torture test for any car or 4x4. This one in particular is usually regarded as a 4x4 road only and then only in the dry season. However 2wd cars have taken it on and made it too as this video shows with an old 1994 thrashed out ED Falcon.

One thing I learnt a long time ago - it’s amazing, the places you could go with a Ford Escort van.

I read a book a couple of years ago about the beer industry and, after that, I would never touch a drop of Budweiser. Never mind the bland taste, the ethics and behaviour of the company have been shocking over the years.

On the subject of books, this is an interesting read: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brew-Britannia-Strange-Rebirth-British/dp/1781311862

This is another, more light-hearted read: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Sheets-Wind-Quest-Meaning/dp/0330442473

I’m not, generally speaking, a great fan of Bud but the local Co-op had a “special” of 4 bottles for £2 so I bought some. Now the sun has gone back in, so I’ve put it in the pantry to await developments. I’m sure one of my sons will drink it, if I don’t; that’s a handy thing about having sons.

I have always thought that Bud should be poured back into the horse.:biggrin_mini:
