Man, you don't live on james track a 16 Km road between Inman Valley and Myponga...........a road between two councils who don't give a fXXX ..............in the Winter , axle breaking potholes, in the Summer bull dust axle deep.....................views are beautiful though  :sungum:  :sungum:

Mike

That sounds like our back road to Tesco's. Between the pot holes there's a glimpse of token road every other mile. It's not that the council doesn't give a fxxx, it's that they can't afford the tarmac to fill the pot holes in. And views? Well you don't get things like that in Grimsby. In fact, you don't get anything in Grimsby. Period.

I was introduced to the Melbourne version in 2002, when DougN told me that on no account should I use the "Sh*ttyLink" (I think one end of it started at St. Kilda) as it was quite expensive and my hire car didn't have the electronic gadget for it in its windscreen.

I don't remember an Eastlink, but I did find Melbourne traffic light designs interesting, especially the one remaining crossing at Glen Waverley which still had "DON'T WALK / WALK" neons for the pedestrians. They were just starting to introduce LED heads at the time, and I found out later that they were made by a company called Aldridge. Aldridge were later to supply some of the pedestrian countdown displays for TfL.

That was CityLink you travelled on.

EastLink didn't exist in 2002.

So you'll need a return trip down under to experience it.

I always think Grimsby is such a lovely name for a place.

"Where did you go for your holidays?"

"Grimsby!"

"Uh .. yeah, great!"

Could be worse. Foulness springs to mind, or Nasty, of course.

Worse would be a placename that sounds wonderful, but in practice is an industrial nightmare.

Thinking of somewhere like Primrose Hill, but to a non railway enthusiast its a botanical disaster.

Like  V8 car racing, Dr Who  and The Rolling Stones,  cricket was much better in the 70's

Sometimes I wonder what Kerry Packer wrought on the world when he beat Rupert Murdoch to the cricket.

"The NFL on Fox" is but one of the many outcomes.

IS the NFL on fox that TV show with blokes wearing susoicioulsly tight pants who go around bamging each others helmets in some kind of victory celebration just after they've run about 3 feet without falling over or getting pushed over the sideline by some other bloke in tight pants? Then they stand around for 10 minutes looking confused or more likely concussed while the alpha male commentary team do some talking about what happenned for like 3 hours before the offense team get taken off because their pants are too tight and there fore are rubbing and so then the  defence (prononced  deeeeeefence on this show!) part of the team come on and take over the bit before the next ad break.

If that is indeed what you are talking about then yes  it iis   shown here on  7Mate  (a digital TV channel that obviously needs more money in order to buy something better) every Monday - a bloke at work puts it on just to annoy us so I have become an expert.

It looks  very gay  oops, I meant to say that it looks not at all boring since it goes for about 400 hours with iits timeouts and tediousness and ads - way longer than a five day test match but with  way less excitement which is saying something.

EDIT: I Googled '7Mate nfl' and it looks like NBC's Sunday Night Football games, so the answer to your literal question would be "no".

The way the NFL is trying to expand their audience I wouldn't be surprised to see matches played in Australia before long. They played at Wembley, Twickenham, and in Mexico City this year. The opening weekend of the College football season saw Stanford in a blowout with Rice in Sydney. I have no idea if 7Mate is showing a game from Fox, NBC, CBS, ESPN or the NFL Network.

My actual point had little to do with the game itself but that Rupert Murdoch relinquished his Australian citizenship to become a US citizen for the express purpose of conforming to an FCC rule that required owners of television stations to be US Citizens. (At the time, Australia did not permit dual-citizenship, though as we know from recent Parliamentary antics they do now.) Murdoch's intent was to start a fourth television network in the US and one of it's primary offerings to build the network would be broadcasting the NFL. (Kerry Packer had taught him a lesson he would never forget something that Australians would see in the "League War" with Murdoch's "Super League".)

The broadcasting on Fox is subtly but notably different from how NBC and CBS present NFL games.

The NFL manage their monopoly well and all of Fox, CBS, NBC and ESPN (through an affiliation with ABC) broadcast NFL games, in addition to the NFL's own latecomer - the NFL Network on cable.

You seem to be trying to get a rise out of me. NFL games do run for about three hours, give or take, so shorter than a one day (50 over) cricket match. If you find it less exciting than a five day game that ends in a draw or a nil nil game of keep away football played for one point each in the standings, you are certainly free to do so.

We suddenly got swamped by NFL coverage  a couple of years ago when Jared Hayne went to play over there and was billed (By us Australians) as some new wonder player who would bamboozle the US players by using his Rugby League skills. Any on-field achievement he made, no matter how small was covered by our TV news, newspapers and so on like he was Phar Lap*. Then he began dropping the ball and the magic faded away and he was dropped from whatever the team it was that he was signed to and the NFL news disappeared from the  headlines and now it is just played on the 7 mate channel on Mondays.

Apologies if you thought I was trying to get a rise out of you,  its just that as they are packaged by 7 mate  the games just seem to go on for so long. I guess since it isn't a ratings winning sport here  they can just pad it out with 5 minutes of ads every 5 minutes, which they actually do, and there are  lots of talking heads inserted into it too so the actual game play only seems to occur in 10 second bursts every 10 minutes or so which just completely kills any game flow, so admittedly its not the  best format to judge the actual game.

*Phar Lap was an aussie race horse back in the depression years who went to the US to try his luck Jared Haynes style , but died in mysterious circumstances while over there. Probably poisoned by the mob apparently.

Bit of a fizzle, all that hype. There was some curiosity by the US sports media to see if he would work out. Turns out NFL football was a lot harder to play than he thought it would be. He was cut pretty quickly, and that was by the 49ers, who weren't very good then and weren't very good this season.

There are actually a number of Australians playing football in college and at the pro level who are punt specialists, either as former Rugby or Australian Rules players.

*Phar Lap was an aussie race horse

I presume Phar Lap's heart is still in the same jar at the National Museum where I last saw it.

Speaking of Australian mysteries, how much coverage of Harold Holt was there in the last week, 50 years on?

I can't say I've even seen anything of it on the Tele

.

The big News story this week ironically involves the aforementioned Jaryd Hayne, an alleged off field incident in 2015 and the pending Civil case.

The Amtrak crash also made the News. Along with all the usual Christmas type stuff.

Last Weeks news was more about Prince Harry's (now fiance') Megan.

Poor old Harold is Yesterdays news it seems, although I'm sure it would make the Headlines if He were to reappear :O

And the sad news that Rory Odonahue (Thin Arthur of The Aunty Jack Show) passed away tragically.

ITs not all bad news though..

There was quite a bit about Harold Holt in the Fairfax press, including interviews with family members.

I think it had a 'standard sized' horses heart next to it as a comparison when I saw it back in the '70's on my family trip to Melbourne..

Back then the must sees were Phar Laps heart, Melbourne Goal where Ned Kelly was hung, Captain Cooks cottage and the  Philip Island penguins.

Things to avoid were those intersections where you had to do that weird hook turn or whatever it was called to avoid crashing into a tram.

The Harold Holt anniversary coverage varied depending on what Newspaper you read or TV station you watch. , The ABC and Fairfax got into it a bit, Murdochs stuff has journalists who have never heard of him and so just stuck to Sophie Monk news as per usual

It does seem  so Aussie though that our PM suddenly disappeared  one day and we all moved on and its forgotten. Imagine if JFK had vanished the same way rather than being shot, there would be 10 billlion conspiracy theories rather than just  the 2 billion that  are on youtube. . We just kind of went -  "No idea what happened there, I spose we'd better get another bloke to do the job".^

*Personally, I reckon he was done in by the mob, Phar Lap style.

The legal way to do a hook turn.

It actually makes sense, because it leaves one lane, entirely for traffic going straight ahead. But you do have to watch out for red light runners, before you move off!
