RMweb Premium Indomitable026 Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Right, todays [steady] progress The bottom stock rail has had chairs added and welded to the new sleepers The new crossing is installed. previously the crossing butted up to the end of the (now short) switch rails, so we have moved up about 4 sleepers. The old switch has now been removed and sleeper tops cleaned, note also the new switch rail with dropper soldered on. The straight switch can be reused. and the new switch rail offered up into position. I clamp the rail tops in this way to ensure alignment Compare the curve of the new switch rail to the top stock rail and you can see the extent of the radius easing I'm trying to achieve.

yorkie_pudd
Great track building skill there Damian something I couldn`t do as I wouldn`t have the patience for it lol. I`ll stick to custom refurbing vehicles and PC`s far less hassle.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2013 I'm considering moving a crossover on Greyscroft, I don't think I'd start it just a few weeks before a show though! Nice to see those clamps used to align rails, thought it was just me that did that!

RMweb Premium Indomitable026 Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Nearly there now. Trouble is I'm not that happy with it. The curve looks a little tight because I'm using a 1 in 6 crossing on what is actually a curved point. Probably should have used a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8. However the 37 pushes through ok.
RMweb Premium Indomitable026 Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Well I should know better than this. This cruel shot shows the issue. I'm going to pull the whole lot up and go for a 1 in 8 angle crossing. The two straight points in the background are 1 in 7. Why I thought this would work I do not know, I've actually just replicated the original problem but without the tight 'S' curve. Double damn!
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Brave move. I 'reluctantly' agree (after your careful work) and you are doing the correct thing. Your head needs to know it's right; you would always have thought I should have used an 8! P

Your head needs to know it's right; you would always have thought I should have used an 8! P Yes you're right I probably shouldn't have worked today - its just time is precious, I'm pushing myself even though I don't feel like it. Ah well it will get sorted. Just watching a brilliant programme 'Attack of the Zeppelins'.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted August 26, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Zeppelins,,,, sounds like a topic reset to me, so here's a few shots from Dawlish Air Show this weekend: An estimated 80,000 people watched from the beach, town, and all the adjacent hills. (PS there is a railway line and station in this photo!) First up we had the Red Arrows - tore over the cliff and then out to sea Then two young ladies walking wings and waving lots (rather them than me!)
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted August 26, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 The last year of the Sea Kings A Gloucester Meteor - bit of a surprise standing in for a Sea Fury Then our current jet - the Typhoon. We thought that it was amazingly agile and somehow able to do some unbelievable things (number 1 daughter thought it was very noisy) Then on to another amazingly agile plane, must have been all engine to do some of the stunts .
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted August 26, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2013 Then there was a big triangular blob, a very unique shape and size. It came in low over the sea, silent, then a whine and then the NOISE! The Vulcan was obviously the star of the show as the streets started to clear as soon as it started heading back up Damian's way. Pity because next we had 2/3 of the Battle of Britain flight (the Spit was out of action).

lmsforever
Now that's an idea ,why not have a Sea King heading towards Newquay with attendant noise a fitting tribute to this wonderful aircraft and the guys who fly them .Any new class fifties to appear on the layout?

Is it a plane or a bird and who dive bombed who he he he. could Damian not have a seaking and Vulcan cross Ditd on guide wires or winching down a pasty to some poor hungry trackside worker maybe ! ! RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted August 26, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2013 There's something about Avro aircraft, isn't there, which just looks right, somehow. Both the Lanc and the Vulcan have it, even though they are such different machines. I'm so glad we still have the opportunity to see these flying, for the moment anyway. Thanks, Chris, Al
RMweb Premium Indomitable026 Posted August 27, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 27, 2013 Awesome shots Chris You've cheered me up no end. That Vulcan - wow Can you arrange for one of them to bomb my disfigured point?

winterbournecm
Damian That shot on the previous page of the point work is probably prototypical. The trackwork at BZ isnt a work of art, but a mis match of previous designs ripped up and started again (sounds familiar?). The wagon trails as vehicles set back into the various roads when viewed from the box demonstate this. To say the trackwork is rustic is the kindest way to describe the yard. Yes understand Craig, if it was only for photo's then I'd leave it - no problem The issue is that it has to run at shows - and reliably, so it had to come up.
