Three years of driving and I managed to notch up a turn on every single 377/1, 377/2, 377/3 and 377/4 except one!  377324 has eluded me for three years but last night....

Southern Class 377/3 377324 Barnham 28/6/24

Got it!  Of course the penalty for this victory was three hours of Barnham/Bognor shuttles on which 324 has been trundling up and down every half an hour all day!!

Now, come December, I have to start underlining the 387's...

458425 hides out in Eastleigh works on 28 June 2024. How much of a future this unit actually has is to be seen; sadly I suspect its future is not too bright as SWR do not seem to be in any hurry to introduce them onto the Pompey Directs as originally planned.

Two of them are parked on the nearest track to the main line at Feltham Depot today.

An unexpected extra trip up to Gatwick Airport this evening and an encounter with pretty much the nearest we have on our books to a celebrity, 377111

377112 leaves Pulborough forming the 1B25 10:26 Bognor - Victoria service on 17 July 2024. Sad to note the rather out of control lineside vegetation, it is becoming more and more common to hear the train brushing against encroaching trees, even on the busy routes.

Not to mention the issue of having bits of buddleia and other foliage coming in through the side window (I always drive with the droplight open) and the issues with vegetation obscuring signals, signs and other key points...

Fortunately not a problem last night on the last service train out of Bognor, just a humble shuttle to Barnham with more crew than passengers that for some reason now warrants a six car formation:

Southern Class 377/3 377302 and 377310 Bognor Regis 16/7/24

This reminded me of some old 110-format negatives I scanned.  Also long gone and a little bit later - not long after the electrification - a 2-EPB snapped at North Woolwich amongst some much older exhibits at the sadly closed Railway Museum.

For no other reason than idle curiosity (and because I don’t really know much about the modern railway in the UK), why does this unit have celebrity status?

Because it is the only Southern 377 not to carry the standard Southern livery. It has different vinyls (NHS) to reflect its 111 number (incidentally a similar approach was carried out by Thameslink to 700111).

Last train of the Night Shift, also the first train out of Bognor:

Southern Class 377/4 377428 Bognor Regis 23/7/24

Then one stop and back to bed...

Does 377101 no longer carry poppies instead of a Southern logo?

Not quite a non-standard livery but a noteworthy variant.

377101 still has it's poppies.  The only other specials in the fleet at large are 377111, 700111 and 717011 (All NHS Thank You's) and 700155, the Trainbow.

387201 and 387202  don't have all their Gatwick Express markings from their time on loan to Great Northern .

Only other variation is 377442, still missing its First Class yellow stripes at one end from its time when it was a three car for a few years.

My over enthusiastic eight year old asked for a trip to East Worthing and back this morning...

Southern (on loan from Gatwick Express) Class 387/2 387210 East Worthing 27/7/24

Southern Class 377/3 377322 and 377306 East Worthing 27/7/24

Southern (on loan from Gatwick Express) Class 387/2 387225 East Worthing 27/7/24

...so the only two 387's out on the Coastway West today plus the six car all sheds.

Just in case it’s of interest to anyone here my book was launched today at a gathering in Basingstoke.

Within an hour 15% of the run had been sold

The first and second print runs sold out. The third run is not far from selling out.  There is likely to be a fourth run later this year.

I think we’ll call that a success. All proceeds go to restoring 4-Cor unit 3142.
