I was always puzzled by the logic of these Swiss style clocks where the second hand is driven by a motor and takes 58(?) seconds to go around the clock face and then stops until the minute hand steps on to the next minute.

I came across them in the 1970s when visiting a clock factory as part of my job. They were making them, but AFAIK not for the Swiss!

 

What exactly is the point? It seems just like a gimmick.

It was Hilfiker, the original engineer/designer's idea, according to this article: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/time-up-for-second-hand-on-swiss-railway-clocks-1.1713931

 

Mr Hilfiker designed it to complete its revolution in 58.5 seconds then stand still for 1.5 seconds more to, as he put it, “bring calm in the last moment and ease punctual train departure”.

 

Which does sound like something a designer would say.

Blue SYP class 101 DMBS at Leamington Spa, 3rd March 1967.

The trailer coach is in lined DMU green, being overtaken by two-tone Brush Type 4 with Maroon Mk1 stock.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad's #8948 loaded grain between Galong and Cunningar, New South Wales on Tuesday 4 April 2017. Motive power is provided by SSR's own C507 (second unit) and C508 leased from CFCL Australia. Only 10 of these venerable C class units were built, in 1977/78, and in their fortieth year seven currently remain active, the remaining three stored with mechanical issues.

Construction sector liveried 33056 'The Burma Star' (coincidentally an award my Grandfather held) roars through Gatwick Airport with a late running Crawley bound Yeoman aggregates service during February 1989.
