A reminder that beer was not originally a recreational drink, but a way of treating water so that it didn't kill you.

Well I suppose it kept you occupied whilst you worried about where the Pannier was or is - can't decide which it is.

...which reminds me of the Scotsman who never drank whisky without water and never drank water without whisky.

OK, Ok, OK....

After immense pressure her is a lonely Pannier.

Even the fireman is keeping an eye out for you.

Enjoy....

Oh what about the immense pressure, namely me to not show a Pannier.

I don't know youngsters nowadays just can't take the pressure.

Aside from that nice piccie. I don't believe we've seen one from that angle/position before.

But I decided to change ‘READING’ to ‘Return to Reading’

Thanks Chris.

I have this picture in my GWR Goods Wagons book but in there is also a picture my ones and I wanted the large GW letters so went for that.

They actually look better with the larger G & W

Unfortunately I only have the one book with photos, I think I need to get more research material

May I ask which other books you have that have more photos of the T’s

Chris

Not bad but a pannier is cuter.

There's something about a 45xx that ticks all the boxes even as a fireman I preferred 4588 to 6412

A better ride, bigger boiler/firebox, more room in the cab or something else?

Job to say, they just look better, cab is cramped as the side tanks extend into the cab as far back as the cab doorway, so as a fireman the handbrake was in the way... they did have an step up inside the cab floor for the driver so you have something to shovel against.

Just loved the way they dug into the task when starting off with a load as they tend to roll from each cylinder thrust when starting.

Or may be because 4588 was the first engine I prepped including oiling up between the frames for Eric Sims as I was a skinny 13 year old and could wriggle in-between the eccentrics and inside valve gear to get to the motion and axleboxes balancing on the brake rigging over the pit full of water at Paignton .... we are talking about 1973 remember.

There was a scheme for the few volunteers to adopt an engine I choose 4588... by the end of 73' the only volunteers left where Pete Roach and myself... funnily enough when I mentioned this to Barry Cogar last year he'd completely forgotten that's how Pete and myself started.

Much of our time was spent working under Nat Clifford the CME (he was an ex 72A fitter and ex Rhodesian Railways)
