Hilux5972's Royal Scotsman Build

Ok so 2 of these arrived while I was away.

Both were quickly seperated into their parts, before changing the window layouts.

The ends of the coaches were cut so that I could get the roof and glazing out easier.

The window frames were removed and sanded smooth.

Then the windows that needed to be were filled in.

That's all for now. Will let the filler dry for 24 hours and then give them a good sanding and refilling if necessary before their first coat of paint.

On the gangway of the end of Service Car 99969, there is a board with the Royal Scotsman's crest. Its only really visible when the train is running with the observation car next to the loco and the MK3s at the back.

A recent fitment, not sure when, not on the train when I am modelling it in the 1990s, also has had the buckeye coupling removed. The observation has also had a crest fitted to the handrails since original conversion.

They look Great Merfyn. Can I ask how you managed to get the lining so straight? I'm really struggling with that.

 

Applied the transfer with plenty of water to float on then adjusted straight with a wet paint brush, it gives a few minutes to move around before drying. Can be wetted again after if not happy with first look.  Eyeball along the coach is the best guide I find. Compare with bottom of windows to align.

Thanks Merfyn. You'll be modelling the old LNER coach as Dining Car No.2 then won't you? Be great to see some more images of your work.

 

Progress so far. I got the part converted coaches from e.bay. The sleepers I had built before.

The LNER car is on the workbench at present gathering dust, then two more cars to go.

Ok so made some more progress today. Got the filled in windows all sanded back.

I then primed them, which I forgot to take photos of, and then gave them the first coat of paint. After the primer, I didn't need to do any refilling of the windows so I was very pleased with that.

Will leave these to dry over night and then into lining tomorrow.

Managed to get the lining done on the 2 Mk3 coaches. Much happier with the way these ones turned out. Lol Ive been away on business for a month so have missed my modelling. It might slow down a bit again once I'm back at work. I'm planning on having a few different class 37, 47, & 57's from the WCRC fleet, as well as the new 66743, 66746, & 66779 from GBRF. Might even do the 3 Class 37's that were specifically branded for the Royal Scotsman when it first began running. I know that would require the LNER coach for Dining Car 2 so I may look at converting one in the future so it can run appropriately for different eras.

Just had an email from Brian at Shawplan. The etch for the verandah on the observation car is now available. Will be added to the website soon I'd say.

 

I got mine from Shawplan at the Derby show yesterday. Very pleased with it. I am just looking how to alter the fitting as my converted coach already has the end bulkhead modelled in plastic.

Next conversion has begun. Since the etch for the Verandah is now available, I have started the Observation Coach conversion. The windows have been changed around to correctly represent the window layout, partly by blanking off some windows, and partly by reusing parts of the coach that were cut away. Second lot of filler has just gone on and will be left over night. More soon

Hello Ryan, I suspect that you have used the wrong coach for your conversion, 99965 was a Kitchen First ex Car 319. A few pictures may help to show the correct window arrangement.

In the Model Rail article the wrong coach (coaches) were used and this may have led to confusion.

Yes I have used the wrong coach. The window layout looks close enough for my liking, it may still get tweaked before the end though. How's your Verandah coming along?

Paint drying as we speak. As a bit too much was removed from the coach sides, a bit of plastic card and filler is drying also.

Photos in a short time maybe.
