RMweb Premium Kris Posted November 10, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 10, 2016 As I drove under the main line near Hayle today I saw a class 70 heading towards Penzance, any ideas what it's doing down here? It appeared to be the loco on it's own.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 10, 2016 Was it one of the Colas Rail ones?
Peter Kazmierczak
Might it be 70803 which has been at Laira for a while?
Clay Country
70810 was at Plymouth yesterday with the RILA infrastructure monitoring device, which is mounted directly onto the front of the loco. It may be linked to this as the loco usually runs light when using this equipment.

Might it be 70803 which has been at Laira for a while? That isnt going anywhere any time soon, its got lots of bits missing and its a bit bent.. royaloak
It was down again today and was supposed to go into Platform 2 but was routed into platform 4 as normal. Expect another trip just to do the other platforms. Platform end wibble is that it is to do with gauge clearance for IET.
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted November 11, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 11, 2016 Platform end wibble is that it is to do with gauge clearance for IET. That does make sense. As IEPs have worked under test conditions to Plymouth, IEP test runs to Penzance are probably on the cards sooner rather than later.

Would you rather send a 70 with the RILA kit down there to accurately measure whether an IET will fit or would you rather send an IET down there and find out the hard way that it doesnt? royaloak
I was trying to suggest that I would expect an IEP visit to Penzance after the RILA test had been completed. I apologise if my post didn't make that clear. That isnt how it reads at all. The route has to be measured (by the RILA) to ensure the track and infrastructure is where they think it is so that the IET (note the T for train, not P for project) will fit, they will then send the IET down and anywhere that is a bit tight on the RILA will be checked at very slow speed. There are a lot of restrictions of where IET can actually run between Bristol and Plymouth (currently prohibited West of Plymouth), far too many to list (its 4 pages of the WON) but the fact it can only go through Bristol TM platforms 9,10 and 14, Exeter St Davids platform 4 and Plymouth platforms 4 and 7 should give you a clue. Co-tr-Paul
Although the at300 are not part of IEP, we still call them set....! No doubt first one at pz will be photographed by many!
RMweb Premium Not Captain Kernow Posted November 12, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 12, 2016 That isnt how it reads at all. It made perfect sense to me and reads exactly how 4630 intended it!

I see nobody picked up on the fact that Bristol TM doesnt actually have a platform 14 NOW! Edited as The Stationmaster pointed out that it used to have a platform 14 but not any more. Either way it hasnt seen an IET.

You young fellahs trying to catch us out (says he who has actually stood on Platform 14 at Temple Meads - a long time ago (and not that anything could go through it). I have edited my post to include your extra information, I think I am correct that P14 was done away with when that part of the station was altered following the closure of Bath Road depot? Oh and thank you for calling me young, its been a few years since anyone has called me that.

Oh and thank you for calling me young, its been a few years since anyone has called me that. Yes and no. The platform which would have become No.14 under the renumbering was done away with at the item of the Bath Road depot access alterations but the original (from 1935 onwards) No.14 was on the opposite side of the station in the Brunel trainshed. royaloak
Thanks for that, nice info. So the original P14 will be seeing IETs in the future once they boot Bristol Panel out and reinstate the tracks..
