brossard
Finally! Some progress to show, this time on the BG underframe. I used brass angle. I made the bends by cutting the webs and putting the truss in a jig: When the shape was where I wanted it (and great care must be taken to get things symmetrical) I reinforced the bends with 0.032" wire soldered in. The transverse trusses were mostly built in situ, very much "make it up as you go" mode. Still I think they came out OK. Thanks to Rob P for his excellent pictures, they were a great help along with the Kemilway instructions. John
brossard
Time to do a trial fit of the major components: Looking reasonable I think. Next major job is to detail the underframe. John
brossard
Another milestone of sorts in my coach build - I've done the brake gear on the full brake. An important distinction for full brakes and half brakes is that there is a manual brake application system. I tried to represent that here. The guard actuator is a screw crank which pulls on the rod that can be seen on the lower picture to the right at the middle of the coach. This is attached to double cranks which pull on the rods that actuate the bogie brakes. This was quite a job with lots of "aaaarghhhs!" and do overs, but I think I got it.John
brossard
More progress, I've done the vacuum pipes along the solebar, steam pipes and dynamo: I used copper wire to connect the vacuum cylinders to the pipe.Notice the steam pipe has a low point for the drip trap. The dynamo has a faux belt from scrap brass. A lot of fettling was need to clear fouls with the bogies.Battery boxes next I think.John
brossard
This morning I fixed the battery and control boxes in place: Apparently control boxes were a feature of brakes. It is to the left of the battery box. I don't know what they did so if someone can enlighten me, that would be great. A cruel close up of the truss area: A wash and coat of primer will makes things look a whole lot better. I started looking into the coach body today. It is moslty finished but there are some details to see to. First job was to make up the coupling: The dummy buckeyes are WM castings from JPL Models (Invertrain). Hooks are spare Parkside. Rob Pulham
Hi John, Was the control box a BR addition? I ask because none of the drawings or photos that I have, have one fitted that I can see.
brossard
HI Rob, I really don't know. I suspect not. I took it from the Kemilway instructions for the underframe and there was no mention of this being a later addition. The Isinglass dwg doesn't show it. As these seem to be unique to brakes, I'm thinking it has to do with brake gear. I believe you have a kit so you could check. I did realise I had left off a couple of details - the cable from the dynamo and the safety chain. These have now been added. Rob Pulham
Cheers John, I do indeed, albeit that I don't have a Kemilway full Brake But I think that the underframe intsructions are pretty generic so i will have a look at mine to see what it says. brossard
The coach is really starting to look the part: The underframe: John
brossard
I managed to get a bit more done over the last couple of days: End details made from plastic scraps and a bit of copper wire.John Edited March 4, 2018 by brossard
brossard
A few other things ticked off my list: Cast brass door handles blackened. Tee shaped grab handles for the central guards door. These are 0.032" brass wire (scales to just less than 1.5" in 7mm scale). I used the coach as a jig and soldered the joint. These have been blackened as well.Gangway ends with cobbled up lamp brackets. This coach will form part of my parcels train with non corridor CCTs. The gangways will be retracted so I won't use the concertinas.John
brossard
It's been a fair while and I've been painting and titivating. Here's the result: Overall I am happy with this. Clip top buffers are a bit of an issue, since they tend to go ahoo. I tried to add an anti rotation feature involving a piece of L shaped wire glued into the floor and soldered to the retaining nut. However, despite that I see I will be forever correcting them. I left the vestibules varnished teak, I nice touch I think. John 7 1

The Bigbee Line
Thanks. Somewhere I have a Maunsell brake to do. This may be the inspiration.
