Popular Post Grimleygrid
All new RTR PGA wagon in 4mm scale Cavalex Models are pleased to reveal its first project, the 51 Tonne Hopper Aggregate wagon built by The Standard Wagon Company Limited, design code PG012A, for Redland Aggregates. Over the past few months we have been conducting research and preparing for what we hope will be a popular choice of wagon to model. This part of the modelling sphere, the four wheel aggregate hopper, has been neglected by the main manufacturers and so we decided to focus on these wagons for our first project. Our thinking behind this particular version of the PGA, the PG012A, is that there is nothing like it currently on the market. Whilst there are other versions of the four wheel hopper available, we thought that it would be a good idea to produce a highly detailed model to the standard expected by today’s modeller in the 21st century. Over the past ten to fifteen years, the railway modelling industry has seen advances in technology and manufacturing processes allowing models to be produced with details that could only be found in Continental Europe. Our vision is to produce high quality models with the input and support of customers across the whole modelling spectrum, something that we feel is fundamental to the laying the foundations of our project. The PGA we are looking to model has been around since 1979 and is still running today, therefore appealing to current day modellers and those from British Rail days. Initially released in Green with grey stripe and small text, then plain green with text, white with Lafarge, and plain white or with black patch give scope for a few different livery releases. More recently the ladders and walk ways have been removed which also offers another variation. These wagons can be seen running from their home at Mountsorrel in Leicestershire on the Midland Region as far afield as East Anglia, the Southern Region, London and the South East and on to the Western Region. The other appeal is that they often ran in smaller rakes or portions, ranging from 8 to 15 wagons which means those modellers with smaller layouts can still run them. Another pull factor is the traction that can be used to pull them, classes 20, 25, 33, 45, 47, 56, 58, 60, 66 and 73, quite a variety! We would look to release the different liveries and variations over time but depending on interest the first release being the wagon wearing the Lafarge livery. There is definitely a gap in the market for these wagons and we would like to produce two other versions of the PGA in the future which would complement both our model and the existing offerings by current manufacturers. In addition, should the N gauge community express an interest for a 1:148 scale version, then we would definitely consider this for the future. Cav has worked on and produced the CAD design for the wagon and we are now at the point to commit to producing the model. However, before we commit further funds or commence tooling, we think it prudent to gauge interest from potential customers and ask for feedback from the modelling community. We would very much appreciate thoughts, suggestions, observations, inaccuracies and any advice that you feel can help us to deliver a product that ticks all the boxes. Below are a few CAD files to allow members to see where the project is and provide us with constructive feedback; Here is a link to our website for more information; http://www.cavalexmodels.com/index.html Please feel free to provide us with feedback. With thanks to AndyY for his support and allowing us to post a thread on RMweb to announce our project.

cromptonnut
For the uninitiated amongst us, what are the design differences (not quality differences) between your version and the "other" Lima/Hornby version, of which I have about 30 of the Yeoman ones. Would they have run in a mixed rake with the "other" type, as I would certainly be happy to consider a few Yeoman livery ones to add some variety to my long stone train. Or is the contrast between your version and a 20+ year old model so much it would just look silly against the older ones?
Grimleygrid
Thanks very much MGR Hooper. Thanks Deltic Man Hi Paul, many thanks. Depending on how the 4mm scale version goes and the interest, we would certainly love to produce an N gauge version. I know someone else that would love a rake of them too! Hi Cromptonnut, as far as I am aware, although I may be wrong, this particular version only ran with other Redland wagons. I do know that some of the ex-Tilbury Roadstone wagons did run with other company’s wagons, both ARC and Tarmac.

Accurascale staff Accurascale Fran Posted September 15, 2016 Accurascale staff Share Posted September 15, 2016 Excellent news and best of luck guys! As a member of a team involved in a very similar operation for Irish outline models, I know just how an exciting project this is, albeit with some frustrating, tireless and busy moments thrown in for good measure. Great choice for your first project too.
Popular Post RBE
Thanks for the interest guy's. It is an encouraging start and I am sure that we can get enough people on board to make this release happen. As for an N gauge version, I would be very happy to get those as I model N as many of you know. If we can get the first batch of 4mm wagons made and shifted then we will be in a much better position to start looking at the smaller scale. For those interested here is a render of the CAD model finished in LaFarge white as per our proposed first release batch. This will hopefully give a better feel for how the finished wagon will look out of the box. Regards Cav
RMweb Gold Davidjsmith Posted September 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2016 I Would like a rake of the original livery please in "00" .What era year would the first batch you are producing be?
MGR Hooper!
+1 for a rake of N gauge ones please...
BernardTPM
Good to see you're looking at adding to the range available rather than duplicating an existing type, unlike Hornby doing the same old fish van as Hornby Dublo, Parkside Dundas, and Dapol had already done.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted September 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2016 Nice choice. A quick minor correction - they no longer run to East Anglia, the Trowse stone is now either the new build JNA or the new build HOA. but the PGA ran until 05/08/2016 which is my last recorded working of them to Trowse. Grimleygrid
Thanks again for all your replies. Hi David, The first batch will be for when they were first painted, roughly around 2000. The PGAs then started to lose the logo in 2008/2009.I too would like a rake in Redland, but without the grey stripe. Thanks for the correction and info Beast, much appreciated. hmrspaul
There was an earlier livery and ownership code for these - bright yellow Railease. Although most of my photos of them in that livery are at wagon manufacturers this one at Stoke certainly appears to have been used http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/redlandpga/e27135b51 An interesting choice, with those large plates on the side making them distinctive compared to other PGA. Good luck. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/redlandpga Paul
RMweb Gold big jim Posted September 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2016 what sort of price are we looking at per wagon?
Grimleygrid
Thanks Paul, we had noticed the yellow livery, however I am not too sure how popular they would prove. They did look good in the Redland Pea Green http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/redlandpga/h33646d3a#h33646d3a Edited September 15, 2016 by Grimleygrid
Grimleygrid
Hi Big Jim, regarding price, we are looking in the region of £25.
No Decorum
Sprung buffers? Three or four in the same livery with different running numbers?
RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted September 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2016 Hi there, Nice project. I think there'd definitely be interest in these wagons in N too. Good luck. Cheers Ben A.
YesTor
Wow! Looks stunning. I'm most definitely down for a rake of these please in Lafarge livery. As someone above mentioned how about a pack of three or four with different running numbers? Another question - I realize that there are quite a variety of the PGA wagon, so I'm curious if you would at any point produce the type in ECC Quarries livery... http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/procorpga/h3e1f7e80#h3e1f7e80 I currently have around thirty of the Hornby version which I'm literally about to upgrade, however I'm now wondering if it will be worth it if a far superior version is on-the-cards, so to speak... Either way, good luck with the project. Edited September 15, 2016 by YesTor

60006
Nice to see another project like this appearing. It's always good to have choices. Out of interest, is this a crowd-funding type venture and do you have a manufacturer in mind to produce the model?
