Giles
This is a 10 1/4" Bagnall I completed in 2000. The idea of building it started in 1976' when my father was Vicar of Cwmtillery in South Wales, and we laid a 10 1/4 line in the back garden - rail and sleepers courtesy of the local pit! At the time, we only got as far as building a little petrol electric railcar, which eventually got vandalised - however, the aspiration was always to build a steam loco, and Dad designed this Bagnall (then an 0-4-0) which could be built on his 4" South Bend Lathe. For one reason or another, it never happened, until I was quite grown up, and decided that it should be done. Meanwhile, I had leaned various skill,s, and very importantly, learned not to be frightened of things I hadn't done before. The boiler was by Bell Boilers, and runs at 150 psi. She lives at the South Downs Light Railway at Pulborough, where she has done Stirling work over the years (and continues to do so)
Giles
The very early days (2000) before decent cameras! The loco was built in RADA's workshops where I worked at the time, much to the surprise of the students, and the tolerance of the staff who worked for me.
Giles
Also built at RADA'S at the same time (but over a matter of a few months) was my brothers Hymek. He did all the mechanics, and I helped things along with some of the bodywork It's powered by a two cylindrical hydraulic power-pack (not to be confused with hydrostatic), driving a hydraulic motor on one bogie. The pack delivers more than enough power for the loco weight to put down to the rails - which is the limiting factor with these things - but for all that, it still sounds like a lawn mower!
