The large American carriers also have mixed fleets of B737 & A320 family aircraft.

American, Delta and United have a couple of hundred of each of both those manufacturers aircraft.

.

Largely due to amalgamation.  Delta was all Boeing in the late 90s and early 2000s, and then merged with Northwest.

Not so Jeff.

The 2008 merger did indeed bring with it a large number of Airbus aircraft (A319, A320 & A330) but since 2013, Delta have ordered well over 270 A321’s, as well as 145 of the smaller A220.

They’ve also massively increased the number of Airbus aircraft in their long haul fleet, in the last decade; more than doubling the number of A330’s they inherited from NWA and adding another sizeable fleet of 34x A350’s.

Precisely, the merger changed Delta's views about Airbus.  I was a tech rep at Delta's Tech Ops in Atlanta over that period when they were taking delivery of B767-400s and B777s but the chapter 11 and merger altered their thinking, possibly due to boardroom changes.....

Hmmm, the last plane that I flew in was an MD-80 from Chicago to Portland July 2001.

On non-transcontinental, domestic jet flights, American was almost exclusively MD-80 variants during the 1990s. The acquisitions of TWA (2001) and particularly U-scare (sorry) US-Air (2013), changed that dramatically with lots of 737s.

With their St. Louis connections, TWA actually had a lot of MD-80 variants at the time of the merger. (McDonnell Douglas being big in St. Louis). The ex-TWA equipment was mostly much older and in far worse condition than the American equipment. Even if it had a paint job you could still tell with the way the interior was configured.

When I lived in Chicago in the mid-1990s I extensively flew on American, less on United.

Back in December I flew on a brand new Alaska 737 MAX 9. Happily none of the doors fell off.

BTW, that MD-80 flight was on either United or Delta; it was a fly-and-ride partnership with Amtrak. I flew out to Portland from FTL via Chicago and rode Amtrak's Empire Builder back to Chicago,  then on to DC on the Capitol Limited, and home to FTL on the Silver Star.

RAF Navy Merlin Puma Merlin has popped in to Barton for a top up, also get Chinooks on a regular basis.  The blades don't stop spinning, it's a hot refuel.

Stay there, and in a couple of hours you should see the superstructure of 'Arklow Fern' passing in the background.

Just in time for rush hour haha.

They'll be pleased at both the lifting bridge and the swing at Barton.

Well this time it was the 'tank' (swing aqueduct) that broke down and delayed the ship for an hour. Photos to follow, but I'll put them in the ships thread since I don't think a 5000-tonne coaster would fly very well.

Odd, I thought that the U-99 was sunk somewhere in the Atlantic.

Sightseeing flight operations in Juneau AK today.  Presumed to be DH Turbo Otters or something similar - no doubt someone will correct me.  These were about half hour flights.E3472072-AA30-4E7D-9327-A9EE015FA99E.jpeg.0541b161a1115137449286bbe4826971.jpeg8C003441-5948-4BA1-8E1B-FF2B6CC5D066.jpeg.38e8f61b5b35cd9d8c38160a9e53305a.jpeg05B99D09-D432-44A1-89AB-8B3E5E24895F.jpeg.a6498612af04c5840738e42c76f4d9de.jpeg

Not an RAF Merlin. They were given away a number of years ago now!

Can anyone help with identifying the aircraft type in the second photo on this post please? Guesses so far include Herald, F27, Varsity, HS748/Andover.

Suggestions posted on the original topic would be best, I think.

Time flies and I don't know the current fleet then.

A Puma it must be!

It is a Merlin, but is most likely a Royal Navy example.

Best

Scott.

I think it is now known as the Joint Aviation Command (until very recently the Joint Helicopter Command) - specifically to avoid single service ownership!

Best wishes

Good point, although I don't think the Navy's anti-submarine nor anti-surface warfare machines are included within that, nor the training helicopters; just the commando helicopters from the senior service?

Best

Scott.
