aberdare
Hi Mal My best wishes for the next few weeks and my thoughts are with you and and your family, devastating news like that is very hard to take, very hard indeed. Jim
Purley Oaks
Thank you all so much for your supportive comments and PMs. It means a lot. Still in shock about the whole thing - it's very surreal, as though I'm a writer writing this stuff. Think I may try for a second opinion, or at least ask if they can put a camera on a tube into my stomach and find out about the blockage from the inside rather than the scan. The plan appears to be that I return home sometime next week to be delivered palliative care by the district nursing team. As I'm unable to process food, the sentence is to be starved to death - which I don't consider particularly humane. Goodness know how agitated (and emaciated) I'll be in a few weeks. So I wonder about the main blockage... Meantime
Andrew P
Can you get a private assessment Mal?
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 26, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2019 Definitely worth pressing for another opinion and another technique. While there is breath there is hope.
RANGERS
I can think of nothing to say which hasn't already been said, a blow that only someone who has been dealt it could ever fully come to terms with. Our hopes and prayers are with you that a second opinion may deliver a brighter outcome. With that prospect there is always hope.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 26, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2019 A friend of my parents lived for more than 30 years after losing most of his stomach and bowel. He was badly shot up at Arnhem and it was the German medics and doctors who saved his life. He did have to stay on a special diet for the rest of his life and strictly no alcohol. AngusDe
A former flatmate, now well into his 60s, lost a kidney last year. He very nearly felt well enough to travel from Harrogate to Sherborne for a reunion a week later. You may well be surprised at how quickly you buck up, too. I do hope so. One of my 'secret' targets is a trip to Model Rail at the SECC next month Angus

Popular Post Purley Oaks
Hi everyone Time to pop in now that I have a laptop. I was moved to a Marie Curie Hospice last Friday - a bit apprehensive at first but no need to worry, it's a fabulous relaxed place, wonderful. The plan is to get me home after the house move on 22 February. Yes, we're still going ahead with that, crazy at it seems. The new place will be much better for Gabe, a new start, a place to keep busy, and there's a great south-facing back garden which we've always wanted. Medically, the second opinion concurred with Edinburgh. The peritoneal cancer is kind of like an alien exo-skeleton squeezing the small bowel closed and too close to the stonach for them to do anything. But once over the shock I felt the best thing to do was accept the inevitable with good grace and good humour - there will be tears, too, but there's some great black humour to be had. No point in getting angry about it which would achieve nothing. There's a helluva lot of admin to be done beforehand, anyway! But it is a flippin' nuisance (please use another word starting with f, I did with my mum today and she agreed!) Thanks for everyone's PMs and other thoughts here, makes a difference. We'll keep you updated. Sun's out here, days are getting longer so spring's on the way, which is all great. Meantime, take care Mal 1

I'm also pleased to see that the house move is going ahead. All the best. Jamie 1 15 1

bbishop
Mal, We're all of us totally numb - not just the diagnosis but the brave way that you're handling it. Just keep going - and best of luck with (most of) the 6 nations. Bill 1 12 1
RMweb Gold PeterBB Posted February 7, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 7, 2019 As others have said we are totally numb, especially after the hope from Basingstoke last year, and pleased that you are continuing to plan the move to make it easier for Gabe. Thinking of you both in our prayers. Peter 1 8 1
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted February 7, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 7, 2019 My mother had exactly the same cancer but instead of strangling the intestine it strangled a main artery that then burst and that was it.
Andrew P
Numb as others have said Mal, I'm not a great or prolific contributor to ER, but I do look in and see how well respected you are in our little community. Andy. 3 2 1

RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted February 8, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 8, 2019 (edited) Mal, I salute your bravery and hope that if I was ever in the same situation I could face it like you. I wish I could offer Scotland the best of luck in their remaining 6 Nations matches but that would be a step too far mate! Thinking of you and Gabe, Bob. RMweb Premium NGT6 1315 Posted February 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8, 2019 Mal, I was only just able to backread a bit on this thread, possibly because the big C has taken people from my own family in the past couple of years and I couldn’t easily summon the courage as a result. It’s definitely not lack of interest, which I feel I need to emphasise... I wish I could say anything of real meaning, but I have to admit I am completely lost for words (and, yes, gutted, if you want to call it that), given the course of events since December. Whatever‘ll happen, I’m sending thoughts your way and to your family, and shall be hoping that you will not face any suffering. Got something in my eye now... 4 1
