Hello Martyn,

may I aks how you did the seaweed?

Markus

Hi Markus,

My Dad gave me some scenic left overs from his American logging layout (now dismantled), among which was a large bag of "Finescale Forest" US natural preserved mini Lichen stems (for making fir trees; I suspect he bought it on holiday in the USA) which display subtle variations in colour, and are also superb for representing ferns, but looks good as seaweed too I think. It was simply cut into small pieces and pressed into PVA adhesive, with more "growing" off the walls/ lock gates. When dry and the Yacht Varnish is applied it soaks into the foliage leaving a wet look.

Hopefully the photos show it better, as well as the supplier details from the instructions. Not sure if this is readily available in the UK, but I'm sure I've seen similar products in the "Anita Decor" range in the past.

Might try that at the next show, with an audio loop of seagulls playing!

There was a SR seaside branch terminus that used to exhibit at the Glasgow show that had audio of seagulls "to give it atmosphere"  - as someone operating a nearby layout it became exceedingly annoying as the weekend proceeded, to the point of conspiracy to sabotage the audio unit:-).

Ha, yes I've had similar experiences at shows myself! Years ago I was near a video stand playing the same video on a loop for 2 days which had the most irritating musical interludes. Rock star image of tv thrown through the window and all that. . . ! ;-)

More work done on buildings, with more yet to do. Also test fitted the extension to the layout for the first time tonight. Only recent detail added on the main layout is a new "yellow" ground disc signal (non working) for the goods yard exit/headshunt, which still needs a little more work blending in.post-28743-0-31888400-1495577195_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-59708400-1495577243_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-85010000-1495577281_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-71947200-1495577313_thumb.jpg

Always nice to get your models outside in the good weather, the natural light shows everything up well (and in my case highlights the flaws!) Pity I can't fold back the roof of the loft on a nice day :)

Jim

Very true Jim, I can only apologise about the poor backscene in recent photos! And flaws, yes there are probably "a few" which need sorting!

  • 2 weeks later...

Had an enjoyable day at Hulme Hall show today, no damage done and the layout ran well; took a few phone pics during a quiet moment, with some shunting taking place.

Among the non railway models on display, this caught my eye, a chap working on a very impressive, fairly large scale model (1/76 or 1/100 I think) of the Bismarck, which he is making in etched brass, the bridge area is an absolute joy to behold, I don't envy him painting it though!

Good show Martyn? Never heard of it before.

Hi Nick, it was a Toy, Hobbies and Model Railway show so Boats, 'Planes, Buses, Lorries etc as well as Railways, kind of a glorified toy fair to be honest rather than what might be termed a "Scale Model Railway Show", very enjoyable all the same!

Hi Martyn,

Some very nice pics, the layout is looking great. A nice variety of stock too I do like your class 24 with headcode boxes.

In the last pic there is a 5 bar gate. Did you make it? or are they made by soeone? I need a couple for Llanbourne.

Cheers Peter.

Thanks for the kind words Peter, the gate is from the Peco LK-46 Field Gates http://www.peco-uk.com/product.asp?strParents=3309,3322&CAT_ID=3323&P_ID=17240 .

I used the same gates painted white for a User Worked Crossing too:

After each outing with the layout I try to do a list of things that need attention / repairing / altering. One thing that has come to light relates to that smallest item of rolling stock, the Wickhams Trolley. Or more specifically, where to stable it, as it has a tendancy to be in the way, wherever I put it. But I don't want to just run it into a siding and then have to run it back to the fiddle yard.

I did wonder about putting a truncated siding on the old turntable approach alignment next to the Foremans hut by the disused turntable / fuel point, although this would probably mean handbuilding a 3 way point to access it (to replace the Peco long Y point). Such a siding could be used instead for a diesel shunter or stores van, though would probably be too short to hold say a class 27 or similar.

It would also mean the unofficial staff car parking area would need moving, possibly next to the Foremans hut or by partly infilling the right side of the old turntable pit; however I have had several people say they like this feature just as it is.

This is the area in question:

What do people think?

Grateful for your thoughts!

TIA,

(Edit to amend info)
