Popular Post HeatonLodge40
Been a couple of weeks of doing mundane frustrating jobs, mainly involving the backscene at the very far west end. Problem is that everything on HLJ has to be dismantled and reassembled so there’s a lot more work in allowing for this. However the backscene is coming on well at the far end and I’ve slowly started working all the way down. Had a disaster with another river pour last week. Unfortunately I added too much activator and right in front of cameras (who are making the episode on HLJ for BBC2) the resin started billowing smoke and set rock hard in seconds. I tried to put a brave face on it but going to have to redo it with a helper. Pretty obvious to modellers (if you watch it on TV) it’s all gone wrong. Oh well.. That said the river should look ok with another pour, as there are lots of depths and colours now! I think I’ve spent £500 on resin so far back scene coming on..river looking ropey it looks fragile but with locks, handles and catches, the rear of the west end scenic break back scene fits well. A black pvc banner will cover all this lot pretty soon 31 12

Great to see it moving forward - the scale of the project is so massive I have to keep reminding myself that it's not OO gauge! 1
rubber duck
Surely, the Mother of all layouts shouldn't be hidden under this section, It deserves its own Topic heading, or the very least moving to the layout thread? Regards Pete.

AndrewT
Just noticed the 'Daily Mail' article in which Mirfield is described as a 'Hamlet'. I've hear it called many things but not a Hamlet. Thanks Daily Mail.... close, but no cigar ! 1
HeatonLodge40
Yes Andrew the hamlet is actually Heaton Lodge itself not Mirfield. Here’s a link to the article in the Daily Mail today. I was very dubious about speaking to them but I guess it’s decent PR for the hobby. Where they got the numbers they quote as in costs etc is beyond me. Least it’s not described as a giant train set etc https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9251581/And-stop-200ft-Man-recreates-rail-junction-Britains-biggest-model-railway.html 14 1

Simond
The article wasn’t patronising, and it was positive. Give what the press has written about modellers in the past, I think I’d be quite happy! Atb Simon 1

They have portrayed the layout fantastically (all credit to you for it).
HeatonLodge40
Since the Daily Mail article ITV news have asked to do a piece about HLJ for their ‘and finally’ bulletin at the end of the news. Anyone think it’s a good idea? 9 1
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted February 13, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 13, 2021 If it was the Channel 4 news then they might just have to drop the dead donkey story to make way for HLJ! Seriously, to attract more in at shopping venues, some might just be persuaded by the "as seen on TV" line. Kev.

Anyone think it’s a good idea? You’d probably have more certainty of good coverage from a reporter who is known to be a modeller and/or a rail enthusiast. And there’s always the possibility that coverage from regional TV gets used on the national network. I’d suggest trying to get someone like reporter Tom Ingle from BBC’s Look North interested. I seem to recall that he’s been used on rail stories that aren’t ‘business related’ in the past.
gordon s
I’m sure you’re on top of it Simon, but as always my first concern would always be security and the more visibility/ exposure, the greater risk of stock theft or pure vandalism of years of work. Just tread carefully as I know it is your pride and joy......
Andrew1974
Sounds like it could be helpful for drumming up interest for when taking it on the road is possible. I’ve just read the comments on the Daily Mail article and 95% + of them appeared to be very positive.
Simond
If you can ensure a reporter who knows something about railways, you’ll get an enthusiastic, and accurate report, and it will certainly help your business, so I’d try to arrange that, if you can. good luck, and do tip us off if & when cheers Simon

Lots of other people will as well, as evidenced above, but there are lots of ifs and buts to be taken into account. It's your decision (obviously) at the end of the day, but you can be sure you'll have plenty of behind-the-scenes support.

REgards Ian I once clocked one at 80mph. We were going down hill with only six coaches. Going up the bank on the other side of the river it struggled to reach 40mph. My worst experience was doing a test run between Rugby and Nuneaton after commissioning some alterarions. It was on 'Sister Dora' from the Bescot Enginers Pool. Totally clapped out and limited to 60mph. I stood behind the driver to check signal sighting for two round trips at full speed. The vibration and swaying was so bad that when I got off the final run at Rugby station it took me about five minutes to get my land legs back for the walk across to the PSB. 4
