jazz
Moving slowly forwards again there is still quite a bit to do. Not only the cab interior bit still some external detailing to do. (All this around some more house painting) Hey ho, happy days. 11
jazz
That was some loco to build. Already a heavy model, I was given a heavy weight to put in the boiler. (Hope it doesn't wreck my track on it's test run sessions) Edited April 7, 2021 by jazz 10
jazz
between all the ongoing decorating, a start is being made on the Gladiator 2-8-0 LNER 04/8 Another large loco on the WB. Starting as usual with the tender.
jazz
Almost finished the house decorating so managed to get a bit of time on the WB. I've got the tender well under way now.
jazz
That's the tender built. Just the coupling to loco and fall plate to do when the loco is built. 7
jazz
A start now made on the 04 chassis. Quite a straight forward assembly. Using Poppy's builder block the chassis ran as sweet as a nut straight off the block so to speak. That makes a very pleasant change from easing the holes to relieve tight spots. The centre two axles are sprung in my usual way.
jazz
Not much done over the past couple of days, though plenty done in the garden. That's all sorted now though. The chassis needs a bit of work on it as yet. The pony truck needs the position of it adjusting plus extra clearance for it to swing. The dummy valve gear and cylinder front cover needs some attention too. The sand boxes, slide bar steps and sand pipes will be sorted when the footplate is under way for correct positioning. So onwards and forwards. Edited April 18, 2021 by jazz
jazz
After a very nice walk on the beach yesterday time was spent sorting out the 04 build. This build is a bit complicated as I'm using a B1 kit for the body and having to to do some scratch building and modifications to achieve the 04 loco. So late yesterday and early this morning this is where I'm at. You can see one of the mods, the B1 cab sides/front was designed for a curved drop on the footplate. Also it was 3.5mm short on height for an 04. So that is sorted. The long splasher tops needed shortening and the chassis also needed shortening to fit. So now looking at the B1 boiler and I think that may be OK without alterations. 9
RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted April 20, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20, 2021 Hello Ken, I've really enjoyed catching up with your thread this morning. Your work is incredibly neat and clean; lots of food for thought! All the best, Nick. 1
jazz
Just a quickie post. Got the boiler unit sorted toady, A bit of tidying up to do where the scratch built lower fire box had to be added. Off for a rest now. jazz
More forward progress after forgetting to mention the s/box saddle had to be scratch built. The reversing rod, it's support and the hole in the cab front needed to be made too. tomorrow will be another head scratch figuring out the cab interior. Could not find any photos on line of an 04's cab interior, that does not help in the slightest. Also the steps need adding. When all that is done the chassis needs completing. 7
Simond
Looking good, Ken. my interest in NE / LNER locos is rudimentary, but I guess there is more than a family resemblance to other locos of same designer/era ? and folks moan about GW engines being “all the same”. cheers Simon 2

jazz
Now starting to get somewhere with this build. DavidS of the RMweb Kindly pointed me to photos of an 04\8 with a nice photo of the cab interior. Thanks David. I did get the coupling to swing side to side in the slot on the beam. Which is a nice touch I think. I still have the cab interior to complete and the chassis to detail to add. Then I should be ready for the big cleanup and paint shop. jazz
At last I've won the battle with this build. Just the fall plate and loco to tender coupling to sort tomorrow then a darned good clean. It's very clear on these photos the alteration to the cab sides, lifting the drop down B1 cab to lifting it up 3.5mm and adapting it to a straight footplate. 7

N15class
Sort of stuck at the moment, I've had problems with two locos, and I seem to of lost interest. But I have just finished two wagons, made most of the base boards for the layout, and started to lay some track, bit slow but I have to build that first too. In the next week or so I will revisit the locos, I really need them sold. I would like some bits for my layout.
jazz
I guess y'all are tired of seeing this loco now, but here it is all done and dusted. Last photo of it, promise. 16
jazz
Today starts a kit for my layout. The Dragon Models ex Rhymney Railway R class. As sold by Taff Vale Models. To be GWR 43. The chassis has been a doddle to build, I have a feeling the body will also be a doddle. I like the trailing wheels set up. work very well. jazz
This afternoon started the body. All going well. just basically had the cusp on the etches to file off. Very pleased with this kit so far. The only fault (highlighted in the instruction booklet) is the fold etches on the tanks are on the wrong side. It is suggested that you mark where the step recesses are and turn the tank etches round to the opposite sides. I elected to just fill in the half etches and use them them as intended. The photo show the result of doing that. Edited April 29, 2021 by jazz
jazz
All down to adding the castings etc. There was a bit of trouble getting the s/box, boiler and firebox to align correctly. That entailed a bit of shaving off of the s/box saddle to get it all perfectly horizontal, all's well now. 7
