What's the link between DLPG and Spennymoor?

Is there a model railway club in Spennymoor?

No idea. I've probably not been back to Spenny more that a dozen times since I left school. I didn't go that often when I was at school either. Sept. 70 to 1975.

Ma Hutton was our 1st year Form Mistress. (1X)

um, um, um... whoops!

Bet yer got no brickwork like that in Radstock Tim. Orgasmic lamp standard eh?

Talking Spennymoor, Two_sugars have just just "agreed" with a previous comment of mine so I had a look at his details (as you do).

His location is Costa del Durham. That reminded me of a Spennymoor connection.

Does anyone remember the Nationwide new programme? In the 1970's (I think) they ran a piece about Spennymoor called Cost del Pitheap.

They were interviewing this bloke from Spenny who was trying to promote it as a holiday destination. He was serious, Nationwide were clearly not.

I can remember a film taken from the North Eastern Hotel (trying to maintain a railway connection) looking up a row of back to back terraced houses.

There was also film of a local model (Jennifer Murray I recall) in bikini and bouncing a beech ball in front if the slag heaps.

Six if you count the old line lifted line to the gas works n Tudder Colliery.

Now then Porsee...if you want to get picky...I can count 11* sets of rails (or former sets of rails) crossed on my trip to school.

If its any help the bus went round via Doggie, Metal Bridge, turn off at Smart and Browns and then up to Page Bank before coming back down to Spenny.

We crossed 3 seperate lines twice...and I have included internal colliery lines.

*might even be 12 sets...and haven't include the Tudda colliery line either...

Shirley you men down to Page Bank and you forget, I got kicked off the bus at Barnfield Road next to CJW's church. I remember the nationwide report it showed a view up Craddock Street when the bricks were Black & White faced enamel. BPD (Before the Pebble Dash). It was about the same time they made a programme about P J Proby being a fallen idol & skint. He used to come into our Gym and play volleyball against us.

PJ Proby used to live in Spennymoor. Near the Park.

That was a complicated route. Smart and Browns then to Page Bank before going to school. Axlebox must have crossed my route on the way to school.

There used to be a railway line out the back of Durham Road School.

It was long before our time but I remember the tunnel was still there, under the 5 lane ends, well into the 1960's.

I had family that worked at Smart and Brown's when I was young (didn't everyone).

I can remember the lines into the factory and the footbridge for the staff.

The same line carried on to Westerton Pit. We used to play along the line near the pit. Can anyone remember Nanny Goats Castle. Next to the line?

Pursee, your right I was meaning North Close not Page Bank...it was 35 years ago.

Now then DLPG when did you want us to stop this day trip back to Spennymoor as we could last out until your show in October (we've got 11 or 12 railway lines to discuss and we travel from lamp post to lamp post)...but by then we will have been kicked off RM Web...so is it about time Poursee started his own "lamposts I have admired" thread?

PS, see you at the show.

Sounds like the type of documentary David Bean or Ray Gosling  could have made. If only.

From what I can remember the house belonged to his "patron". Not much furniture neither.

Nowhere near as complicated as one of Axleboxes wagons.

Still there but blocked in 1970. It used to make an interesting "diversion" during the mile or so, walk to the metalwork room. The line at the bottom of then school field was the area were the big lads used to hoy bricks at the left footers. (Tudhoe St Charles) There were two lines crossed Dobbies Bank. The line to Tudder Colly. where the pop factory was (White wellies and the teachers threat, "you'll end up working at Greys if you don't stick in")

and the line into Tudder gas works.

As seen in Bob Ableys pic on this website.

Low Spenny. Good old Sid Chaplins stomping ground. (Not to mention Ces & Peter Ship who where always propping up the bar in the Graveyard.)

I was once told of a murder committed in William Street. All I knew about the street was it had some classy Revo lamposts illuminating the railway signals.

Thanks for that trip down memory lane, Porcy.

Bob Abbley was my form teacher at Spenny West.

Alonzi also delivered his ice cream in Middlestone Moor.

Many a time I've told people the tale of his horse and cart delivering ice cream.

If you had missed him you know where to go by following the mark that the steel tyres left on the tarmac road.

What with ice cream and Dougie Berryman's chip van, people think I'm from the dark ages.

Along with a couple more specialist traders;

Simpasture Gate Miniatures

Vintage Transport in Miniature

Good variety of trade, not just a bunch of box shifters.
