Every so often a construction issue on the cottage develops into "how will it look." At that point my contribution ceases with the words "I don't do aesthetics" and call my wife.

In Turkish there are two forms of agreement my wife uses. "Tamam" is "OK" but the danger word is "peki" which ostensibly means the same but actually translates as:- "I think you're wrong, I don't like this one bit but can't find a convincing argument, but just you wait and you'll see I was right all along." There is no long-term benefit in me accepting "peki" as a go-ahead for anything. However, if I say it, the deal is signed in blood.

Dates from the 16th century - a branch of the Inquisition...

Seeing as Lutherans would be possible victims of the Inquisition, I would say that the Lutheran Early Response Team would be reacting TO Inquisitorial activities!  Nowadays, its probably just a bloke with a briefcase sent out to damp down spiritual unrest...

True Lerts make ideal household companions, friendly, playful and always ready to put down vermin that cats can't be ars3d about dealing with.

Though conscious of the folly of setting overly-ambitious targets, I aim to get it up beyond "Laconic" within a six-month.

Gawd, La Conic, surely you are not intending to go all French on us?

Nah, Greek.  The Laconians were neighbours of the Spartans and their reputed attitude to life entered the language.

Agreed, having a valve on that pipe is a total waste, so question rises if it is actually a valve? The photos are indistinct, is it just the back of the ejector sticking out with a union on it?

Good early warning of date - this one has fascinated me since we went on a school outing to visit a tapestry woven to commemorate not it, but the nine-hundredth anniversary of it. We even got to meet some of the sewers(?), in a very flappy marquee* on the prom at Hastings.

”Commissioned by war hero Group Captain Ralph Bagshaw Ward in collaboration with Hastings Town Council, the 245ft tapestry was created by the Royal School of Needlework in 1966.”

Which, I suppose, proves the utility of school outings.

*Having google-checked, it was in a geodesic dome on the pier. It definitely flapped a lot in the wind, though.

The Spartans.

All a bit "lock and load! Sir,Yes, Sir!" for my taste.

As you say, the Laconians were next to the Spartans.

Next to the Spartans, everyone looks laconic.

I'm sure I heard a Scottish gentleman on the wireless today saying that their system was now:

Test

Isolate

Trace

Support.

You can't make this stuff up.

I think it might have been Test Isolate Trace Support Often On Trial

After 9/11 when government terrorism awareness campaigns and slogans were all the rage ours came up with "Be Alert Not Alarmed"  and sent us a fridge magnet.

Looks like your lot have taken that and simplified it for you.

If only Hornby had tried...

If I had the time....

Triang motor bogie or a more moden spud/beetle/whatever

Airfix 1/72 Cromwell MkIV tank kit for "authentic" turret and guns  A tenner usually, or far cheaper when Aldi have them.

(And you get paint & glue with the kit!)

Plastikard or thin card to taste

Paint

Extras: LED lights, DCC decoder for fancy stuff like switching the lights on/off

Simples!

I'll keep the pic to go in my projects ringbinder...

It'd probably make a wonderful grinding sound with an old Triang motor bogie with knurled wheels, but then DCC would be problematic!

I for one am pleased that BoJo didn't waste money on a blinking fridge magnet.  Anyhow, with all the Lockdown time we still have, we can always print the admonitory sign out and blu-tack* it to the fridge door!  :jester:

* Other sticky blob products are available...

With Covid, we just got a letter from No.10, telling us each personally all how jolly serious it all was.  Serious enough to warrant a letter.  On paper. Delivered by Royal Mail.

It reminded me of the letter sent out by HMG to tell us about AIDS way back in the late '80s.

At least we don't yet communicate major Government announcements solely by Twitter, which is just as well as I don't Facetube/Twitsergram.

I think, though, if HMG had thought it through, they'd have just sent everyone a roll of loo paper printed with Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Avoid Piles.
