Actually, do buy one, they're gorgeous; my Bodiam arrived today, and I rather like it! Pictures to follow. Yes, bit of a dog-fight over there. On the whole, I think I'm still holding out for something a bit bigger and of a shade of green not so improved, such as might have worked cross-London exchange traffic c. 1902. Or attack something bigger still with an extra pair of wheels behind, as I've seen a couple of people do, to the same end. E-asy? But hey, I'm a Midland enthusiast - I like my engines BIG! I'm still rather taken with the idea of that Drill Hall that had a Barlow roof of just the right dimensions for St Pancras in 7¼" gauge. Unfortunately I suspect I would need planning permission to add the Midland Grand Hotel onto the end. 1

sem34090
I'd say both, but my current predilection towards the Metropolitan can only sway it towards Metroland.

Pffff, looks like a ripoff of the Victorian bit of the Spirit Of Progress from the 1930's (says the guy who had never heard of that bloke in the hat...) Pubs re-open for meals here on Friday but only if theres less than 10 of you, which mightn't be an issue in some parts I guess.. I thought you were being almost sarcastic! If I'd thought that you didn't know I'd have explained properly. The gentlemen concerned is a Sir John Betjeman, C.B.E. - A much-loved 20th Century British poet (poet laureate 1972-1984) who also happened to be something of a railway enthusiast as well as an enthusiast of Victorian architecture. He's one of those responsible for St Pancras having not been demolished by BR (hence his statue there) and tried (unsuccessfully) to save the Doric Arch at Euston. If you despise the architecture, and destruction of the railway network (shortsighted, but sadly the losses needed to be cut somehow), of the 1960s then you'll probably find something to like about Betjeman. Perhaps his two best-known documentaries are the two mentioned above (Metroland and Lets Imagine - A Branch Line Railway - The latter is on BBC iPlayer for UK parishioners, the former may be found online), with Metroland probably being the most famous. I'm not a terribly great fan of his poetry, to be honest, though I like some of it. Then again I'm not much of a fan of poetry anyway. The best known poem is, I should think, Slough. "Swarm over, Death" seems worryingly like a reflection of the present reality. Edited May 13, 2020 by sem34090 You probably didn't really want, or need, to know any of that did you? :P 2

I don't know a lot about him or the reason his statue was there though so thank you for filling in the bits. Coincidently regarding the part about him saving St Pancras, we lost someone this week that I don't expect you guys to know - Jack Mundey. He was secretary of the builders labourers federation (think union) in the '60's and '70's. When developers eyed off areas of our historic inner citiy and waterfront to bulldoze and turn into yet more soulless downtown office blocks he implemented 'green bans' - no builders labourers would work on sites that contained items of historic or environmental importance. Eventually the developers caved and thus we still have areas such as "The Rocks" and Wooloomooloo rich in convict/ colonial history. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/12/jack-mundey-was-an-australian-hero-who-saved-sydney-from-the-bulldozers-and-shaped-a-generation-of-activists Poetry - you can't not like a good bush ballad! No Aussie kid worth their weight in vegemite has not at some point stood up at speech night to recite "Clancy Of The Overflow" or similar: I had written him a letter which I had, for want of better Knowledge, sent to where I met him down the Lachlan, years ago, He was shearing when I knew him, so I sent the letter to him, Just `on spec', addressed as follows, `Clancy, of The Overflow'. And an answer came directed in a writing unexpected, (And I think the same was written with a thumb-nail dipped in tar) 'Twas his shearing mate who wrote it, and verbatim I will quote it: `Clancy's gone to Queensland droving, and we don't know where he are.' etc etc etc Ah Australians - we can get up the noses of people!
