And to be pedantic (sorry) I would say most trunks and branches are shades of grey and perhaps green if moss is present. I do like the density of the branches. Cheers Duncan Hi Duncan. I have used Seamoss in the past, but not on any of the other trees already completed for the layout so I'm sticking to the same method for continuity reasons! I only used sleeper grime on these as it's the only near suitable colour I had in a rattle can, plus these trees are for the very rear of the layout and the trunks are largely obscured by other things, but I do need to make some more prominent trees for which I'll use a more appropriate colour. Cheers, Tom.

Just a light dusting and trying to avoid getting it on the trunk, which it turns out is not easy when the spray is all but invisible and the tree is 2mm scale!! RMweb Gold TomE Posted February 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 29, 2020 Hi all. Things are starting to fall into place now around on top of the embankment. I've been putting off this area for a long time and it's good to finally start to see it progress. the shelter between the two cabins over the patio area is complete, and I have been slowly creating more of the hedgerow/tree line that runs behind these buildings. The one thing that has had me stumped for a long time is getting 2mm scale cut grass to look right. The latest effort below uses 1mm static grass, and looks ok length wise I think. The colour needs work but I don't think it's too far off for a late summers day, this is just a test section made by smearing PVA onto a sheet of plastic, applying the fibres then pealing it off once dry. A sort of transparent grass matt. The only issue I have now is how to stop the 1mm fibres from going everywhere. Even from this tiny test section i'm still finding them all over the flat! Cheers, Tom. 13

jonhinds
As a new(ish) member of RMWeb and someone setting out to model a heritage railway in N using mostly RTR stock, this layout really feels like the gold standard. Amazing work.
Cowley 47521
Really enjoyed reading the thread Tom, it’s excellent. I’ve been following Chrisclevelands Ropley layout with fascination too as I used to volunteer up there in the early 90s. Looking at some of your buildings has made me want to try harder with some of mine!
RMweb Gold TomE Posted January 3, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2021 Thanks! Hoping to make some more progress over the next few months now things have settled at work a bit and it doesn’t look like there’ll be much else to do down here in Tier 4 land for a while! RMweb Gold Popular Post TomE Posted January 9, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 9, 2021 Hi all, hope everyone is keeping safe and well in these strange times! Work on Ropley has been progressing at a snails pace since the initial lockdown burst it enjoyed at the start of last year however, now work has settled into the new normal and our furloughed staff have returned, i've been able to start working on the layout again. Attention has turned to the Handyside bridge spanning the yard area. Also known as the Harry Potter bridge thanks to appearing in that film franchise, it formerly spanned Kings Cross Station prior to the refurbishment when it was removed and sent to the MHR to help improve accessibility. I had started designing the supporting columns in Fusion 360 and test printed a few on the Photon a while back, but the arrival of the mono X and it's larger build area had me thinking about the feasibility of printing more than just the these after further tests proved they were viable. The most recent test piece included sections of the side panels and to my surprise it all printed, with the only issue being a lines appearing where the large flat surfaces start & stop printing. Ideally the model would be printed at an angle to reduce the risk of this. This test section has had a very quick blast with some Railmatch rattle can malachite: The next step is to try printing a larger section of the bridge: Tom.

It's not just the speed, it's the accuracy of the modelling and the quality of the finish that it allows, something that previously was only possible for the most skilled and experienced model makers. (This is not to say that those using 3D modelling don't fall into these categories themselves, Tom's work clearly demonstrates this).
RMweb Gold Popular Post TomE Posted January 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 10, 2021 I’ll call this a successful failure..... Success: It printed! It also validated the dimensions of the bridge for the layout. Failure: As I expected the suction forces on the walkway slab caused some distortion, most noticeable where the cross bracing joins it and at each end. I think I will spectate the walkway section from the supports so I can print it at an angle to reduce the surface area. I also forgot some rivets on the CAD! RMweb Gold TomE Posted January 11, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2021 Thanks all, to be honest I’m amazed it printed at all it’s complete form! I’m trying a slightly different approach by removing the columns and printing the walkway separately. This shows promise as I can angle it slightly to reduce the print surface area and the distortions seen in the full print are now gone. I do need to go back and adjust the geometry of the lattice, I haven’t quite got it right and now I’ve noticed it’s bugging me Tom. 10
RMweb Premium Chris116 Posted January 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 11, 2021 If that bridge was in 4mm scale I would be asking if you could print one for me. That is a superb model of a bridge I regularly go under.
RMweb Gold Popular Post TomE Posted January 13, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 13, 2021 Work continues on the bridge in virtual form. I’m not intending to print the stair rail supports as I think they’d be too delicate and difficult to to support so these will be etched, but in order to make sure the bridge fits in the space on the layout and all proportions are correct I’m creating the whole thing in fusion first. Once done I’ll split out the sections to be printed. I’ve also redone the sides of the main walkway as the geometry of the lattice wasn’t quite right and I’ve added extra rivets, lots and lots of extra rivets....... RMweb Gold Popular Post TomE Posted January 16, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 16, 2021 More virtual modelling! The two large sides that run down the side of the carriage & boiler shop building are complete bar rivet detail. Getting the curvature & geometry of these right was tricky but I think they’re just about there now. It’ll be interesting to see how they print! Cowley 47521
Amazing. Just the amount of green latticework is enough to do it for me!
RMweb Gold TomE Posted January 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2021 I’ve started adding rivet detail to the large panels, a task made significantly less tedious by the create pattern on a path function in fusion! ive also added a rough and ready version of the carriage & boiler workshop to make sure I get the relationship between that and the bridge correct at the entrance to the viewing gallery. I still have a few question marks over the the supporting columns for the side closest to the shed but hopefully I can work out the positioning of these and their style from photos on the web. It’s possible ive made the steps a fraction too wide, but at least I can adjust this easily before printing. Tom. 11
