Evening guys.....

Hope all are well this weekend....?

Here's this evenings update my 'plodding' but hopefully constructive, progress on 'Cambrian Street' with my 'apprenticeship' continuing and centred this evening on building the goods platform......

Began by spreading a thin layer of contact adhesive to both the ends of the platform edge and the required coffee stirrers, after a few mins when this had 'gone off' pressed the two together........

post-20610-0-23909300-1542486797_thumb.jpg

repeated the process working along the edge until they are all in position.......

intend to place central bulks as shown here......

post-20610-0-77546100-1542486967_thumb.jpg

will update when I begin to place the platform bulks.....intend to cover the entire platform, any areas of wood where the crane and surrounding sets are to be inset / placed can be cut out later if required.....

Regards always

Looking good Bob.

Regards Lez.

Hi Lez....Hope all's well?

Will start placing the 'cross timbers' soon,,,thinking of making these slightly longer than the platform width firstly, then when fixed in with adhesive....can trim off the excess to suit.....make sense or cut to correct size from outset....?

Hi Bob. I think it would be best to cut each one to length as you lay it mate. Offer them up and mark them one at a time, cut and glue them down then do the next one. If you glue them all down and then cut them to length you run the risk of the saw blade wandering and cutting into the balks. The problem with cutting them all first is that you can start to make them progressively larger or smaller as you go. Better to cut them one at a time I think. Do you have any very thin straight wire for simulating fixings? Once the glue is dry I would drill them with a

0.3 mm drill and then push a bit of fine wire as close to 0.3 mm you can and cut the wire with end cutters and then give it a bit of a tap with something suitable but use something as a buffer between the wire and the hammer. I have a miniature anvil that's just over 3 inches long I use for things like this so that I don't get hammer marks in the wood. I would do two holes at each end and two more in the middle. I would also do a few with two bits of wood instead of one and have two fixings at each end just to make it look like they had to make do with what they had in stock rather than having all of the wood one length. Maybe do two or three full length and then one out of half lengths. Then stain the wood with a thinned wash of  black/dark earth or better still use Carrs sleeper stain if you can get hold of some. But only do a light wash as you don't want them to look like they have just been laid.

Hi Guys......

Hope the effect looks 'good'.....I am pleased with this so far.....I am taking my time....or more correctly it is taking some time for me to do this.....managed about a tad under three inches in an hour and a half.....!

which reminded me of this.......

Evening.......

Will be adding further timbers to the goods platform through this evening but wanted to 'run something' past you kind guys before I reach the section where I intend to have the unloading crane situated, the area around it paved in some way......

i have two (possibly three) options in my head, on which I would appreciate comments......

Firstly I originally thought to have the area paved in sets, as per the yard across the whole platform..........

post-20610-0-84620500-1542741820_thumb.jpg

Secondly an perhaps more 'modern' 2' x 3' slabbed area, with a back wooden edge.......

post-20610-0-59565900-1542741916_thumb.jpg

or potentially as a third option, totally wooden.....?

Comments please,,,,,,

Regards always......

Hi.....

Making steady progress hopefully here....?

Using a square in an attempt to keep the timbers parallel....

All looking good Bob, personally I would go for the all wooden option.

Steve.

Hi Steve....

Thanks for the posting......with just about 1/3 completed and the greater the number of timbers that are placed in position, the more I think I'll prefer it being timbered along the whole length of the platform.....

Hi....

Platform looking and just may be working out slightly high to the bottom of the door of the siphon (at least this model)....but if so this is something I can live with (given my standard of modelling / expertise ), will check and let you know either way.....?

Hi Bob. I think you have made the right choice with the wood mate it will look great when it's painted. You could always raise the level of the rail by packing with something like business cards or even paper. just to bring it up a bit or shave a bit off the bottom of the platform or even sand down the top.

Hi......

Have also 'packed' up the siding slightly with some business cards, which has raised this to the desired clearance......happier with it now..thanks for the suggestion Lez...!
