RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted October 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 16, 2016 I thought that I might be able to read the name on the signalbox, but I can't (not even on the original scan). Therefore I need help with identifying this Eastern region station. Scan-161016-0011.jpg articulated coaches.. nice.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 16, 2016 Possibly West Green on the Palace Gates line close to Wood Green? Line closed c1964.
jonny777
Thanks for that info. It would make sense with another Wood Green image (posted previously) in the same set.
jonny777
Could someone confirm to me that this rather grainy but atmospheric photo is indeed the country end of Euston around 1962/3? Hopefully the construction work going on in the background ought to help narrow down the date a bit more....
Rugd1022
I'd say it's definitely Euston.
jonny777
This is an interesting photo of a sleeper service being banked over Shap by a 2-6-4T. What appear to be a Stanier sleeping car flanked by two Mk1 versions, is then followed by a brake van and (I think) an ex-SR PMV. Why is the brake van there? Is this an ECS working? If so, why then the need for a PMV?
Poor Old Bruce
ECS sounds plausable, do you have a photo of the front of the train? If ECS it could be worked by a freight engine which would not provide train heating so a GBV would provide a stove to keep the guard warm. The PMV could have been a last-minute tag on the end to get to Carlisle or wherever. Edit: Is it a Southern PMV or an ex LMS 6-wheel CCT or similar? jonny777
Sadly, there is no photo of any other part of the train. I am not a carriage and wagon expert; just a collector of (relatively) unwanted images which can't make the Ebay merchants 150% profit in a few weeks. I just feel that historical images should be seen as that, not a way to get rich.
woodenhead
Given there is snow on the ground that would mean it is winter, a sleeper service wouldn't be out in daylight unless it was summer so it cannot be a service train,

eastwestdivide
... Edit: Is it a Southern PMV or an ex LMS 6-wheel CCT or similar? I'd have said SR PMV/CCT. Not sure if it makes any odds determining what was happening though. Edited October 18, 2016 by eastwestdivide
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 18, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 18, 2016 Could someone confirm to me that this rather grainy but atmospheric photo is indeed the country end of Euston around 1962/3? Hopefully the construction work going on in the background ought to help narrow down the date a bit more.... Scan-161018-0004.jpg I'm fairly sure that was is seen under constructions is the new Euston panel signalbox which I believe commissioned in 1965 so I would estimate the date as more likely to be 1963/early 1964. woodenhead
Or late ... Nah, Steam trains all ran to time as did diesels, only privatised trains are late
jonny777
The destination blind on this 142 unit says "Rose Hill" which is Marple; but does anyone recognise the station where the photo was taken?
eastwestdivide
Could be Romiley, although if so, it's had the nearer platform extended: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/HotspotDetails.aspx?stdCode=SME_RML&fullsize=92309 Not sure. jonny777
Thanks. I do see what you mean, but maybe the line of hills in the modern photo would show up on the horizon of the b/w one? Edited to add that I am wondering if it is Hyde? RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2016 I think it could be Hyde Central, but the train is heading away from Rose Hill towards Manchester.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2016 Hyde Central. The double head lamp post is at the Guide Bridge end of the platform. It is above the stone steps going down to Great Norbury Street.
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2016 Do you know when your shot of the building at Barnstable junction was taken (post 297) I have been asked by someone elsewhere who has seen your photo. They said the building was still there in 1980, but had gone by 1983. Duncan
jonny777
I'm afraid there is no date on the slide mount.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2016 Thanks to everyone for their input. I am most grateful. Here are some more. jonny777
Right at the back of the current box was this photo. No railway tracks or locos I know, but it is so quaint and early 60s that I thought RMweb-ers would like it. Does anyone recognise the station?
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 21, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2016 A classic North Staffs station by the look of it but at the moment I can't place the spot.

royaloak
It looks very different now, with the South Devon Highway in much evidence. And it would suit me very well if SWT still ran to Paignton - I prefer the Waterloo route to Exeter, but always have to decamp from the 159 to catch some deplorable FGW DMU! Oi, Those deplorable FGW DMUs you speak of help me pay my mortgage!
