York, The First Away Day - part 3 The Line to York

I guess the first thing to say, about this line, is that from Beverley to York it no longer exists. Various feasibility studies seem to have been done as to whether and how this line could be reinstated, though how serious any such plans were is open to question. Suffice to say that some stations were closed on 5/1/59 and the whole line closed to passenger traffic on 29/11/65.

After leaving Hull the line passed the Ideal Standard works which, at that time, had sidings which were still in use. Onward to Cottingham, which station is still open and thence to Beverley, again which is still open, the line still exuded its NER heritage with some lower quadrant slotted post signals and the all over roof and cast footbridge at Beverley. Cherry Burton, Kiplingcoates were called at before coming into Market Weighton. This station was a junction with the Hull line and Driffield lines meeting at the east end and the York and Selby lines meeting at the west end.

Passing through Pocklington, this station also retained its all over roof and cast footbridge and is now part of Pocklington Grammar School. Again, various aspects of their NER heritage were present at Fangfoss, Stamford Bridge, Warthill and Earswick stations before the line joined the Scarborough line before reaching Lendal Bridge.

Every station, along the route, then still retained an operational goods yard and shed with a daily pickup goods which would meander along the line picking up and dropping off wagons at the various stations.

Of course, none of these observations or reminiscences were made at the time; we merely saw the railway as a means of reaching York. Only in later life and with the benefit of the passing of time, of a host of black and white (and some colour) photographs evoking the memories, could these times and places be revisited from the recesses of the mind.

So we arrived at York and what a place it was and still is. Imagine the initial reaction to the plan to build, what would then be one of the largest railway stations in the world, on a curve. As we rolled over Lendal Bridge, we caught sight of the first green engine of the day as it slowly made its way from the shed into the station. This was a named V2 - 60872 'Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' looking every inch the thoroughbred which the V2's were.

I'll finish this account of that away day in the next part, so I'll leave this one with a photo of Pocklington station as it looked in the mid 1950's and, apart from the signage, as it had probably looked for the previous half century or more.

Cheers

Mike

Good evening, everyone. Firstly, many thanks,  Mike, for feeling able to post the next part of your first day of spotting at York. It is a great account of a special day out you had. I have also enjoyed the photo’s which you have illustrated the account with, and I hope you will be able to post part 5 soon.

This evening we have four more photo’s to enjoy. They are courtesy of Steve Blee, fishermandave89, and Antony Guppy, all on Flickr. I hope they will display in the correct places since this site is not well today.

The first photo’ is a portrait of 97302 - previously 37170 - part of the Network Rail Special Duties Fleet coming through Ferriby on service 0Z50, crew route training for the HST rail measurement train. Fitted with ERTMS and thus usually used on the Cambrian line between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth it is something of a rarity in East Yorkshire. The 17th August, 2022.

York, The First Away Day - part 4 York

Firstly, I must apologise for the delay in completing this account of that first away day; some flu-like 'lurgi' affected me for a day or two before going as quickly as it came!

Anyway, we arrived at York station and alighted from one of the bay platforms which are now the short stay car park. Almost immediately the hustle and bustle of this place was apparent with an overriding sense of trains everywhere. Though this station was probably no larger than Hull's Paragon Station the difference in activity was immediately noticeable. Now, even though I still have the notebook with all of the numbers written down, from that day, I don't propose to list them - too many to enumerate!

We walked to the centre of the station and then over the footbridge as the first of the many Pacifics which we saw that day, appeared. One of A H Peppercorn's A2's - Hycilla - heading south. We had read the names of these various Pacifics, from the Ian Allan book; the classic horse race winners, the birds, the silver names, the officers of the LNER, the Walter Scott characters, the LNER constituent CME's, etc. but seeing one of these glorious machines proudly displaying its name was something entirely different.

60516Hycilla_1953..jpg.6a83dbd37c5455dfe55d389db2376b30.jpg

After an hour of sitting at the south end of the station and then walking to the other end and seeing the station pilots busying themselves moving coaches, seeing one of the Bristol to Newcastle trains arrive behind a Bristol Jubilee and various other trains, we were about to leave the station to 'attempt' the shed when a distant whistle attracted the attention of many of the spotters on the platform. They knew, from that sound what was approaching and, sure enough, one of the legendary 'streaks' rounded the curve at the north end and drew into the station. Silver King was the locomotive.

60016SilverKingc1965.jpg.9c7e3f7ce50ac764b38c5cfe3ccdaebd.jpg

It passed a southbound freight which had been stopped on one of the centre roads and came to a stop at platform 5. Like many of the Pacifics fitted with double blast pipes and chimneys, this locomotive made a sizzllng sound as it waited at the platform. On setting off, the locomotive slipped noticeably and it was many years before an ex-Gateshead driver told me why they slipped. This was done, deliberately, to encourage the mechanical lubricator to fulfil its lubricating purpose!!

We left the station and walked through the road tunnel on Leeman Road, emerging by the workshop at the back of York shed. Looking through the windows of this workshop we could clearly see two Peppercorn A1's, Boswell and Balmoral - 60138 and 60140. We had already seen 60139 Sea Eagle on a northbound train, earlier that day.

60139SeaEagle.jpg.177281b294e622ca33723ad0d4c28334.jpg

That day we didn't attempt to enter the roundhouse but we did proceed to the fence, further along Leeman Road, there to find a convenient hole in the fence and gain entry to the locomotive yard. York's locomotive yard, between the roundhouse and the coaling stage, must have been half a mile long and what a variety of locomotives it contained. V2's, B1's, B16's, K1's, K3's, D49's in abundance, along with Black 5's, 8F's, an unrebuilt Patriot, Jubilees and too many more to list.

to be continued

Mike

Sorry to be a pedant, but your first photo of 60516, "Hycilla", is of a Thompson A2/3, not one of Peppercorn's.

The Thompson locos had separate valve gear for each cylinder, with the cylinders placed between driving and bogie wheels, giving a shorter connecting rod, but overall, a slightly longer loco. They also had larger smoke deflectors. The A2/1 and A2/2 were rebuilds of  Gresley's 2-8-2 locos. They had 6' 2" driving wheels, designed for mixed traffic.

The A2/3 locos were new build.

Arthur Peppercorn's A2's reverted back to placing the cylinders between the bogie wheels, had a longer connecting rod, smaller, slightly differently shaped deflectors, and also had 6' 2" driving wheels.

A lot of enthusiasts dislike the Thompson locos, regarding them as ugly, ungainly etc.

Personally, I loved them.

Good evening, everyone. Firstly, because of personal circumstances I won’t be able to attend the slide show tomorrow morning at the Carnegie Centre. Apologies about that, but I hope it is successful, and I know it will be of great interest.

Well, onto this evening’s photo’s which are courtesy of Philip Wheldale, ALAN HART, John Turner, and 6Y99, all on Flickr.

The first one is a view of an oil train hauled by 37031, on the 17th June, 1985. The train is seen at Boothferry Park, and running from Saltend - Baglan Bay.

37031

Next is a photo’ at Gilberdyke, with a 6-car DMU, on the 11.23 York - Hull, on September the 4th, 1986. The extended caption reads:

“Gilberdyke Junction in the East Riding of Yorkshire where the lines from Goole and Selby converge before the four track section into Hull. Back in the 80's it was all manual signalling and crossings as seen here where 6-car DMU comprised of 2x Derby 108's sandwiching a Met Cammell 101 forming the 11.23 York - Hull slows is about to pass through Gilberdyke Station on the centre roads.

The alert and conscientious signalman has already dropped the peg.”

Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire, 6-car DMU (11.23 York - Hull) September 4th 1986

The third photo’ shows Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 45288 heading a long line of withdrawn BR steam locomotive being held at Daircoates East prior to entering the Neptune Street scrapyard of Albert Draper & Son Ltd - c.18th March, 1968.

Other identifiable loco classes present include Stanier 8F 2-8-0s, WD "Austerity" 2-8-0s and at least one Fairburn 2-6-4T.

c.18/03/1968 - Dairycoates East, Hull, East Yorkshire.

Finally, time for a photo’ of 60019 , which is seen  passing through the Hopper House at Dairycoates Tilcon with the soon to be train, 6D72, the 1118 Hull Dairycoates Tilcon - Rylstone Quarry. The date is 9th December, 2010, during the freezing cold and snowy weather.

Sorry JeffP but the A2/1's were new builds based on the V2 boiler (The original order was for V2 loco's) and as you say, the A2/2's rebuilds of Gresley's 2-8-2s. I'm not usually pedantic, honest.

Like you, I rather like the look of all of Thompson's 4-6-2s and he seems to get unfair treatment by the LNER "Glitterati" if I can use the phrase.

But, pull pin and throw, Peppercorn's A2s were the best proportioned locomotives to run on British rails.

Hi doilum,

I agree, they may well have been, particularly if fitted with a double chimney, but my judgment on Thompson's pacifics is based on a slightly differing aesthetic. Their brutalist look is appealing, as if they could pull anything. I suspect we all have a favourite looking locomotive and many are well balanced, for example the V2 2-6-2 or many exGW 4-6-0 types or perhaps the ex LMS 5XP's?

No boom then...

Best regards,

Rob.

I was on that special train; at the time, we lived in Swindon and the previous day I had driven my circa 25 year old Land Rover to Surrey and back to see my cousin, not a good idea at that time of year in a vehicle with no door seals, especially when I felt like **** at the time.

After a reasonable sleep, I felt much more alive and my wife and I caught the early HST from Swindon to Paddington, followed by a taxi to Kings Cross. To say that I was feeling excited to be leaving KX behind a Deltic was an understatement..... Our seats were somewhere near the middle of the train as I recall, still able to enjoy the sounds. Apart from the haulage, another treat was the ability to buy bacon rolls from a proper Mark 1 catering vehicle.

The route of the train was KX to Hull as shown, then Hull to Leeds, onwards via the Harrogate loop to York. Here, the loco detached and went into NRM for a special dedication ceremony. During our time at York, in the snow, I recall dragging my wife over to Monk Bar Models for a look around. (Who says romance is dead...?). Eventually, the train reappeared in a very cold York Station for a run back to KX.

From there it was taxi to Paddington, then HST to Swindon.

Despite having seen Deltics on many occasions I had never travelled behind one on ECML. At various times I had been able to indulge in the enjoyment of the sounds from a droplight, but only up to a reasonable speed due to the cold air rushing past. Also, as I recall, despite the heating being on, the inside of the bodyside glazing frosted up.

I was able to make up for the lack of Deltic haulage in subsequent years with various rail tours, including two different locos on ECML in the same week in 2002, but that is another story...
