RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 16, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 16, 2023 Good evening, everyone, and thank you, Mick, for posting that excellent photo’ of a WD at Marfleet in about 1965, and it’s most interesting that the WD with the ex-NER tender was working it back to the Southern. Now, this evening, we have two photo’s by John Turner, and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, of Thompson, B1, 4-6-0, 61240, “Harry Hinchliffe", as it accelerates away from Brough, with an up express, in about July, 1959. The photo’ is a bit unclear, but shows how the track layout was at the west end of the station. The second photo’ is of Doncaster, K3, 61964, as it passes the gas works at Brough, with a Hull bound, Class D express freight, on the 20th June, 1959. And, finally, a photo’ by John Turner, on Flickr, of Ruston & Hornsby, Class LPSH, 0-4-0DH (RH 513139/1967) "Herbert Turner" at APCM Melton Quarry, in about 1971. The extended caption, on Flickr, by John Turner, reads, “The loco was new to APCM Barnstone Cement Works, Nottinghamshire and was originally named "The Herbert Turner" moving to Melton some time in 1970. By the date of this photo, "The" had been dropped from its name and indeed the nameplate looks rather crude (you can just see a hint of the original longer plate). When Melton relinquished the use of rail around 1973, it moved down to Humber Works itself, then (after closure of the cement works and a period of disuse) it went to Omya UK in Aberdeen during March or April 2000, then I believe it was conserved by Bryan Lawson at Coleford around March 2010.” Best regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 17, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks again to John Turner, and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, for two photo’s, we see Thompson, B16/3, 61418, by now allocated to Dairycoates shed, as it heads eastwards and approaches Brough station with this Class H train of coal. The coal is presumably destined for the fires of Hull. The date is about 1963. And the second photo’, is of Class B1, 61237, "Geoffrey H. Kitson", as it approaches Brough with a Hull bound express, on the 21st June, 1959. Best regards, Rob.

Not at all, my local station Botanic Gardens had a thriving coal merchants which my parents bought their coal from. Another depot, Ella Street coal yard was only 200 yards from our house and was shunted every morning until the early 70s. Interestingly my primary and junior schools both had solid fuel boilers for heating, the 2 weekly bulk deliveries always provided a welcone distraction from lessons.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 18, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2023 Good evening, everyone, and thinking of smokeless rules, my grandmother, in Market Weighton, had a coal fire until she died in 1995. And, at Beverley station, the goods yard had coal cells until it closed in 1985. Well, this evening, with thanks again to John Turner, on Flickr, we have two photo’s, of Dairycoates, in 1966, and see WD, Austerity, 2-8-0, 90016, running onto its home depot. And in this photo’ we have an atmospheric, photo’, with, silhouetted against (what is probably) afternoon winter sunshine, an unidentifiable and likely withdrawn WD, Austerity, and the local "cracker" (coaling stage) are pictured on Dairycoates, in circa 1966. Ditto for a couple of places down the Esk Valley Line. interestingly enough the last stationmaster at Grosmont Richard Cana left the railway and started a coal business which is still going today, his son sold the business fairly recently, but its roots are in the coal cells that used to be at Grosmont station 3

RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 19, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 19, 2023 Good evening, everyone. Thank you, Mick, for that photo’ of one of 5305’s runs on a steam special. I think you are right, it will have been the 28th December, 1981. I was in that first carriage, hanging out of the window. And thank you Boris for the information about the coal business that the former stationmaster at Grosmont started. Well, this evening, with thanks once again to John Turner, and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, we see K3, 2-6-0, 61932, with a down express for Hull, at Brough, in June, 1959. Going by the ex-LMS carriages, it could be a service which would soon be worked by a TransPennine class 124 unit. And now a photo’ by John Turner, on Flickr, of WD, 90493, which was withdrawn from Frodingham, 36C, depot, Scunthorpe, on the 27th February, 1966, after withdrawal, on Hull's Dairycoates depot and is waiting its final trip across the City to Draper's Sculcoates scrapyard, in about June, 1966. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 20, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 20, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks once more to John Turner, on Flickr, we see ex-LNER, B1, 4-6-0’s, 61322 & 61012 (formerly named "Puku") and Riddles, WD, Austerity, 2-8-0, 90627, resting overnight around the turntable in the roundhouse at Dairycoates depot in about December, 1965. And this second photo’, with the same credit , shows WD, Austerity, locomotives at Dairycoates depot in Hull. On the left still active and in steam is locally allocated 90450, whilst in the distance is another 50B example in 90262. The loco sans-smokebox number plate is unidentiable (even the painted depot code is unclear - 10?) and is almost certainly withdrawn from service and awaiting a final trip to nearby Draper's scrapyard. The date is believed to be some time in 1966. Best regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 21, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 21, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks to John Turner, and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, we are back at Brough, with Doncaster allocated Thompson, B1, 61087, which appears to be heading for home as it eases away from Brough on the up slow with a Class A passenger working from Hull, on the 30th July, 1963. And, in this photo’ by John Turner, on Flickr, we see another B1, this time 61255, at its home depot of Dairycoates, Hull, in about 1966. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 22, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 22, 2023 Good evening, everyone. Thank you, Mick, for those two excellent photo’s of ex-H&BRly, F2, number 104, seen at York when fitted with an ex-NER boiler. Now, this evening, with thanks again, to John Turner, on Flickr, we see Dairycoates WD, Austerity, 90008, as it runs along the "Up NE Goods" line, in King George Dock, working J13 pilot, comprising a train of Shell/BP tank wagons from the BP facility at Saltend, in circa 1966. The train will work into Hull (probably Outward Yard) via Southcoates and the Victoria Dock Branch, according to the caption. And, with the same credit, is WD, Austerity, 90462, pictured near the coaling stage at its home depot in Hull, in again, circa 1966. micknich2003
Attached signalling and KGD layout. The signal extreme left of above picture is No19 on the diagram. Signal right back ground is No22 and No23, the top arms cleared (No23) indicates the train is routed via the H&B Section and not Southcoates etc as stated. 8
RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 23, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 23, 2023 Good evening, everyone, and many thanks, Mick, for the signalling diagram of King George Dock. Plenty to,learn about there, and, as you say, the original caption is clearly wrong about the route the train was signalled to take. Well, this evening, with thanks again to John Turner, on Flickr, we have two photo’s, starting with another photo’ of B1 4-6-0, 61255, this time being coaled under the "cracker" at Dairycoates, circa 1966. And, in this second photo’, a pair of WD, Austerity, 2-8-0’s, with 90009 (50B) nearest camera at Dairycoates, in circa 1966. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 24, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 24, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This Friday evening, we have a further two photo’s by John Turner, on Flickr, and the first photo’ is also credited with Peter Brumby too. It shows Hull Dairycoates allocated Gresley, V3, 2-6-2T, 67684, as it arrives at Brough with the 16:20 from Hull, on the 25th July, 1963. The 2-6-2T will then run round its train, which is made up of BR Mk1 suburbans, a little to the west of Brough station before forming one of two simultaneous (one fast, one slow) 17:15 departures for Hull mainly for the vast numbers of employees at the nearby Blackburn Aircraft factory. And, in the second photo’, is of Deltic, 55007, Pinza, at Hull Paragon, with train 1A13, the 09:36 to London King's Cross, on the 28th September, 1981. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 25, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 25, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks once again to John Turner and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, we see an unidentified WD, Austerity, as it works tender first through Brough with a train load of coal for Hull, in about 1963. And this second photo’ is of a class 30, which was new to Darnall (41A) shed, D5838, and it doesn't appear very old when pictured approaching Brough with this Class 1 working, consisting mainly of Gresley bogie coaches. 1N44 is believed to be the 09:52 SX Sheffield Victoria to Bridlington (via Cottingham), in about the Summer of 1962. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted February 26, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2023 Good evening, everyone. This evening, and with thanks again to John Turner and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, we start two photo’s with the first one of B1, 4-6-0, 61128, at Brough with an up stopping train from Hull, in circa June, 1959. The first vehicle is a Thompson six wheel passenger brake van, and coupled to it is an ex-LMS BG. The second photo’ is just by John Turner, on Flickr, and is of WD, Austerity, 90627, shunting at Alexandra Dock. The shunt is complete, and so it is seen departing and begins the short journey east to King George Dock whilst working J10 pilot duties, in circa 1966. Note that the tank wagon is both empty and purged. Best regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 27, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2023 Good evening, everyone. With thanks again to John Turner, and Peter Brumby, on Flickr, we have another couple of photo’s. The first one is of B1, 4-6-0, 61053, at Brough, with a class 1 passenger service to Hull, in June, 1959. The first carriage is a Thompson, non corridor, BS - Brake Second, with four second class compartments, and the second carriage is a Gresley, teak bodied, turn buckle trussed, Composite Lavatory - CL. All as modelled by Hornby. Note the small diameter smokebox door. The second photo’ is of class J39, 0-6-0, 64831, with a 3500 gallon tender, and a brake van, at Dairycoates, again in June, 1959. Note all the vans in the background. Best regards, Rob.
Boris
Save the date, Saturday 13th May D9009 booked Kings Cross to Scarbados on a tour. I'll be looking forward to seeing that. It'll be some interesting workings at Scarborough that day with the depot in use and TPE regularly storing units in the station, at one point on Sunday every platform was full. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 28, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 28, 2023 Good evening, everyone, and many thanks, Boris, for the advance information about D9009, on the 13th May. All being well, I’ll make my way to Scarborough that day. I was in Scarborough on Sunday, and saw all those stored class 185’s in the station. The Hull service was using platform 1. Well, this evening, thanks again to John Turner, we have a couple of photo’s, starting with a four car class 124, towing a BR CCT, at Selby Street, in Hull, in March, 1984. The saloon heaters are working well with the smoke emanating from them. And the unit is emitting plenty of exhaust from the engines too. The second photo’ is of Deltic, 55007, Pinza, at Hull Paragon with train, 1A13, the 09:36 to London King's Cross, on the 28th September, 1981.
