WEST SHED

Had a fairly quiet day today so I've been weathering the Q1 and I should have some pics later once I download them, I've taken some step by step pics so I hope they come out O.K.

As someone who has only "weathered" some CCTs and always chickened out of weathering any locos, I look forward to these pictures Andy and the associated opportunity to learn from the Master :)

Regards,

Brian.

Well the switching on of the Swadlincote Christmas lights has taken place at 7pm with its customary large Firework Display. Now as we go away in November to get away from the Fireworks it was time to DO IT AGAIN this evening, so with Dee and the Dogs in the car we went for a nice drive in the pouring rain to get away from the most horrendous noise that frightens Dee and the Dogs half to death.

Hopefully that's it now until Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Eve, Chinese New Year, etc. etc.

So the Q1 needed Weathering, now I've never actually seen a Q1, (or many other Steam Locos for that mater, other than Preserved). So I sought out some images on line. You can find LOADS of pics of Models of Weathered Q1's but not many of the real thing and in Colour, so I have workd from one colour shot and half a dozen Black and White ones.

These are the Tamiya Acrylics that I've used applied with my Air Brush plus some Carrs Weathering Powders.

post-9335-0-00118100-1448654446_thumb.jpg

I started by removing the Body and DCC Chip and re inserting a blanking plug so that I could run the Loco on a 9V Battery so that the Wheels and Rods got an even coating of paint.

I used a mix of Flat Earth, XF 52, brown? X9, and Flat Black XF1.

Next I did the inside of the Cab and Tender, (sorry about the very poor quality on the next few pics,) with the same mix.

before.

after.

I then re fitted the Chip and Body and set to work doing the Tender Chassis with the same mix allowing some paint so fall along the lower ridge of the Tender Body.

Before.

Half way along and you can see the difference.

post-9335-0-19824900-1448655218_thumb.jpg

And also in and around the Tender Top, (Now I would normally do this BEFORE filling with Coal as it makes life a lot easier).

post-9335-0-26967200-1448655264_thumb.jpg

Then with the Loco and Tender re united I gave the whole Loco a dusting with extra patches in areas as I saw on some pics. Its also important on the Q1 to go around the Boiler ridges from the front, to ensure no shiny Black Plastic is showing.

post-9335-0-01713200-1448655448_thumb.jpg

Next I used the Flat Black XF1 to do along the top of the Boiler and Cab roof and all around the Smoke Box area. I also blew a very light dusting over the whole Loco to darken the overall finish.

post-9335-0-15481200-1448655562_thumb.jpg

Now at his stage most people would be more than satisfied with the look of the Loco, but it still didn't look finished to me and needed some extra work to enhance certain areas, so I got out some Carrs Weathering Powders that George T gave me some 20 years ago.

post-9335-0-21079800-1448655780_thumb.jpg

Then working around the Chassis I picked out some hidden details, I also added some streaking to the Body and Tender, most of what you see will be washed off shortly to show Rust staining etc.

And so after going over some of the Powder area with a damp flat Brush, (ITS STILL DAMP IN THIS PIC) this is how it has ended up. Ready for Service on West Shed at the Steam Gala.

Great work on the Q1 Andy,

It's got all mucky, just how they should be. I don't think I have ever seen a pic of one clean to be honest. I have always quite like Q1 and have a weathered up one in my display case.

It' belonged to a friend of mine who passed away a few years ago. He left his train collection to 3 friends so I have a few loco's and wagons of his, that get a run now and then.

Cheers Peter.

The photographic step by step weathering of the Q1 is great.  I don't have the guts to do that.

Do we now get a photographic step by step of you making a mince pie?  I also do not have the guts to make one of those.

Bloomin marvellous work, buddy!

Many thanks for that instructional set of pics Andy, I will have to try and apply that to some of my H0 stock.

Great tip about using the 9v battery too, I used to have a friend who weathered but he wouldn't do that, no matter how many times I asked him!

Cheers,

John.

Cheers guys, Thanks for all your nice comments about the Weathering on the Q1above.

I do enjoy Steam Loco weathering more than Diesels, and I'm minded to get some more Steam for West Shed, maybe get back some Midland stuff as I had when I was doing Bitton and were SOLD to pay for the Track and Stock for Pencarne.

Here are few of my favourites that were SOLD that I would like to re do, only better next time.

Thanks Peter and Andy, I do have a couple more Panniers to do later ready for running West Shed as a Western Region Shed at some point, and also for use on Pencarne Junction and Trewenn, and there are some more Goods Wagons and Vans to tone down.

Evening all, well after playing about with Windows Paint in Pencarne I decided to have a go with a West Shed pic as well.

This is the Original.
