P4 Class 55 "Deltic" conversion: Nearing the end of build... getting close to the paint shop - P4 Deltic Pt 14

Ok... here we are, time for a brief update. This time, fewer words and more pictures! I’ve been working on the fuel tanks (still)... but I feel that these are now done. Detail was added using the Archer fine transfers – cast resin... 0.008†rivets (AR88014) to the underside of the fuel tank seem, at the ends of the tanks and to the sides below the tank mounting brackets (2 under each)... as seen in prototype photos. I’m going to admit, that this was quiet tricky given the confines I was working (especially at the tank ends) and getting these flat (and aligned) with the thin film that I’d cut was... er... prone to some vocal accompaniment.

However.., once painted over, the effect is nice – very subtle. These shouldn’t stand out – as they don’t on the real thing, but as with “the real thingâ€.... they are there if you look.

The tanks have also been painted... valves and gauge etc... as close as I could make out from period photos given that in most “period†photos these bits are all one colour – gunge colour. I wanted to start with the right colours... after which the light weathering will tone this back a bit... but not too much.

I’ve also painted the bufferbeams, screw link couplings, cab bulkheads and roof fans. The body has also, as already mentioned previously, been primed... and now the ends are primed white ready for some colour... dum de dum dum daaaaa.

One pic shows all this on the board... along with two suitably primed coach bodies that have been sacrificed as practice pieces. These will be blue with yellow ends before long... and we’ll see how well a) the paints goes on, b ) how good a finish I manage to get, and c) whether I manage to crack the accurate masking lark so recently discussed on a weathering thread on here... http://www.rmweb.co....__1#entry440174 and thanks to all that contributed to that one too.

Finally, a few gratuitous shots of the assembly... awaiting rolling into the paint shop. I’m quite pleased... I just hope that the practice I give myself with the coach bodies will result in a finish worthy of the effort so far.

Thanks for reading, and for comments... etc, etc, as always.

Any questions... please ask away...... Jon

[Edit - isn't so annoying when cruel photos show up mistakes... and I've just seen one. The rivets on one of the tanks in one location are under a fuel vent rather than a mounting bracket - oh bother - I think I may just have to live with that ]

Beautifully and methodically put-together Jon. My only 'spot' is that in the head-on shot, one of the buffers looks slightly askew. Looking forward to seeing the continuation.

Nice work there Jon.

Deltictastic! Couple of quick questions.

1). Those buffer beams, are they any good for a 37? I need to find some 37 buffer beams you see.....

2). The cab step etches. I tried to get mine flush, but I didn't have a detail picture. Should they be proud? Do you have a decent picture?

Nice work.

Cheers.

Sean.

MD... thanks. Yes, the buffers were just pushed in for the photos... they are Hornby class 50 ones so can rotate a little... and will be straight when they go in finally - even if I have to file the tab along the shaft off!
TPOD... Sean, thanks also ... I'd need to look at the 37 in more detail... and to be honest the man to ask would be Brian. I'd not given it any thought ... but having looked at a couple of pics, I'd suggest possibly not. There are a number of variations in 37 bufferbeams, not least with the airbrake pipe positions and the web pieces are not evident - but multiple working sockets are. Looking at an early 37/0, with the original (non-cut away) valance, they are similar... but once cut away, the layout looks like it changes too much. Hey ho - I'll be looking too, or scratchbuilding details for my 37038 when I get around to it. A chap on here by the "name" Rickscateboard (i think) did a very good job a fews years back - IIRC. Cab step etches - best to look at photos. On the 55, the checkerplate etch will protrude... and to be accurate, it'll need reinforcing underneath with plasticard... which is what I did. I blogged this around Christmas time I think.
For photos go to the Class 55 group on here and then Deltic Details thread, there should be some there!
HT... ta!
Hi Jon

That certainly looks fantastic. The work done was well worth the effort.

I must admit to looking forward to the top coat going on.

Well done Jon

Cheers Jon.

I just re-checked the pictures on Deltic Details and lo and behold, there's plenty there. Could have saved myself some filling and sanding there! Thanks for the 37 advice too, it's a while off yet, so plenty of time for research.....

Absolutely incredible. Looking at these photos without the text and background, and given the fine track and wheel standard you could be forgiven for thinking this is 7mm! Exquisite modelling Jon - a real triumph so far, and I hope the paint goes on nicely with less cursing! :)

Top stuff Jon, that's looking really good and it's well worth the effort you've put in. I look forward to seeing it painted 8)

Just had a look at some pictures of DP2 Jon. Thankfully, it appears that this particular loco has no visible join between step plate and body, unlike the Deltics. I'm sure someone will produce a picture now to prove me wrong!

Another question, (sorry), where did you get the checker plate from? It appears DP2 did have this fitted, so I'll need to sort that.....

Cheers and sorry again for all the questions.

Fantastic Work Jon, As good as the Bachmann model is, I think the work youve illustrated here in your thread, has demonstrated just how much more improved a RTR model can be, with the right detailing done as well as the correct parts as well as thought and alot of effort put in

Jon, hi

I can only echo all what has been said above - its really looking tremendous and well worth all the time invested on it.

This blog just keeps getting better and better...roll on (not literally) with the top coat :D

PS - When I see the third photo it still makes me think of the Alien movie...a bit of dribble seeping from the buffer beam and I will be hiding behind the sofa

Thanks to everyone. Whilst I'm pleased with the results so far... it's nice to be buoyed by further encouraging remarks... as you've been so kind to provide...
Sean... yes you guessed it ... they're Extreme Etchings from the stanble of Brian Hanson... and very neat they are too. Give him a call (phone number via shawplan.com - website needs updating but his number is there) and I'm sure he'll be able to help.
Pete... dare I say, that the picture was purely for you . I remembered your comments last time, so had to include it. Next time, I'll photoshop it a bit to add some steam in the atmosphere, some corrosive saliva and fangs.
Again, thanks one and all... need to sign out now and prepare things a bit around here; youngest's 7th Birthday tomorrow and we've things to sort. Night all.
