2FS: Midnight oil

Ok so decided not to allow current events to stop me I set about building point 2. Decided to tidy up a bit and found a bit of hardboard to protect the desk and also to be able to see bit n bobs more easily.

This time I started with a number 6 as I thought this is what I will be using :) So first I soldered up the frog after filing down the rails, I really need to get a better file for this and with York coming up another item to add to my shopping list. Then I set out the sleepers that I have snipped off the waste of the previous attempt and at first tried to make them fit the template but quickly deciding that it would be better to mark and snip later. The I started with the straight stock rail as mentioned by Kris but I am pondering getting the 2mmSA straight track jig to build the reference point to start from although most points that will be build will likely be curved to greater or lesser extents. At which I called it an evening as was tired and didn't want to poke myself with a hot iron. I can see I need a lot more practise at this! as I have a picture of what I want to achieve but not necessarily the ability to do it, at the moment! :) Anyway work stops for a couple of nights so will resume sometime Saturday hopefully.

Number 2 on the go already, well done that man. Snipping off the sleepers later seems like the easier option to me as well. Poking yourself with a hot iron hurts nearly as much as catching a hot iron as it drops by the hot part.

I am starting to get the feel for things but am frustrated with my abilities.. lol but Rome or my point weren't built in a day!! Soldering Irons + Flesh = Pain.. What do you think to using SA rail jig as starting point? I now think it gives me a uniform start even on curved points?

I tend to use one of the jigs as a starting point (pun not really intended!) for all of the points that I build. The one that you need is 1-218 the turnout jig. You can't use one of the others as these don't cater for the wider sleepers used on points.

Your other option, the cheaper one would be to pin a piece of wood then butt the rail up against this to give a good straight line. If I hadn't bought the point jig this is what I would do.

If you do want the Jig you might have to wait until Steve S takes shop 1 back (I don't know how packed up things are at the moment).

I never bought a jig...and have considered it a few times...but I just align a piece of thick card adjacent to the sleepers to give the straight edge.

Mind you, I have built so few turnouts for my layouts I still refer to the 2FS beginners guide everytime I construct one...an invaluable read.

Thanks Kris and bcnPete, I hadnt thought about the piece card, although its not so much the sleepers it the rail I have a problem with. I am going to get a jig as I think tis will help me no end.. I have been looking at the begineers guide to Pete and very useful. Think I will have to look at making diy jig at weekend.<br>

Thin bits of strip wood can be used for straight or curved gauges ( a few panel pins half nailed in). The only jigs I generally use are the crossing jigs. I used to make my own from a scrap of wood and panel pins.
