More Earth moving. May 2007

Since I wanted a decent amount of space for the yard buildings I needed to hold back a lot of earth below the viaduct. Not sure where these soft mouldings came from but suspect they are from a German manufacturer via one of the continental model railway distributors. Not brilliant detail on the walls but once weathered they are not so distracting. Also test fitting the Peco viaduct sections. There were going to need to be a lot of viaduct sections! In this area of the layout the viaduct was slightly cut down from full height but as it went out over the centre, lowered section of the layout they would need to all be extended.

Plywood for crosssections to make the rear and ends of the baseboard strong and then polystyrene to fill in the earth. For the end of the baseboard I cut a pair of plywood crosssections so I had one for the next board along to match up. Again you end up with a chicken and egg thing where I end up reluctant to glue something down in case it ends up wrong. Here I need to get te viaduct in place to mould the land around it but have to set the land before I can stick the viaduct start down. I also need to make decisions about whether the viaduct will be removable or separate for transporting.

Trial positioning of the start of the viaduct.

And after a lot more polystyrene, kitchen roll and PVA glue. I have to say I would never do this again without having the adjacent baseboard connected and building the surface across the joint in one go and then cutting it to separate the two boards.

I must have still been thinking about laying track along the top of the viaduct since I've got a piece placed for the photo.
