A slight alteration to the track plan

I’ve not been happy with the short siding at the front of the layout, it looks like bit an afterthought, which of course it has been. Unfortunately, I have no more square inches to spare of the Challenges 18.83 square feet to alter it. After remembering some layouts expanded their footprint after the previous 18.83 challenge, I wondered if I could do the same, as well as fit the whole layout in my car. In taking more measurements of the car boot, I realised I could squeeze a little more out of its width. Initially, I’d measure the narrowest width of 37 inches, which is 16 inches above the boot floor. At the base of the boot, it is 39 inches wide. So I’ve devised a cunning plan to make use of the extra 2 inches.

The baseboard and track plan for the challenge. The blank area at the front of the layout offers the possibility of posting small information panels/sheets.

My idea for extending the siding along the side of the Running Shed after the challenge.

The inspiration for extending the siding came from a colour photo of Penzance Shed in Western Region Steam Locomotive Depots by Laurance Waters. As a result, I feel it has improved the look of the layout considerably, just a shame it doesn't fit within the challenges scenic area rule. To achieve this, I will have to add a section to the baseboard I've already built. Do not think that this will be much of a problem, being a small slither of 2 inches should not create a weak point.

Hi @Yan, I wonder if I might ask a question?  I was just wondering what the purpose of the short siding under discussion is? I’m not an expert on Engine Shed layouts, so wasn’t sure what it would be for.  At a guess, the long proposed version (post-competition) could be for a breakdown crane, though I could be wrong (and there are the three sidings behind the coaling stage as well).  Just wondered.

My only other thought was that I do hope you enjoy building trackwork - there’s a lot to get done, but it will be very impressive once finished.  All the best, Keith.

The three sidings at the back behind the coal stage are for coal wagons full and empty.

The extended siding at the front could be used for breakdown crane though as far as I know non we're allocated to Penzance. The siding in the photo had what looks like tool vans/parcel coaches but I cannot fully identity them. I'll be using the siding for loco storage, possible early hydraulics and 08s.

If the three sidings at the back are for the coaling stage, should the track to the coaling stage not attach to the upper fiddlestick line rather than the engine line?

With the current set up you can shunt the three coal sidings but not place those wagons into the upper level of the coal stage, and it would ease the incline a little as it would have more space to climb and there is little protection from runaways.

The moving of wagons between the coal storage sidings and coaling stage will be facilitate with cassettes. On the right hand cassette board.

I'm after a visual of different levels, a gentle slope up to the coal storage sidings with a steeper slope up to the coaling stage. Hopfully the early mock-up i created will help to explain.

The slope up t I the coaling stage will not be as dramatic as the one in the mock-up...

During an operating session I envisage replacing empty with full wagons on the coal stage will happen once.
