The King - old vs new frames

blog-0493837001424007962.jpgThe new Finecast frame is a great improvement on the old one, with a lot more detail on the nickel silver frets. The end result will, however, be lighter, though with the weight of the body I don't think this will matter too much. The first photo shows the two frets that make up the frame kit:

Eager to pursue this renovation, I put the basic frame parts together, using my Comet frame jig as an assistant. The round spacer at the front is an excellent idea from Finecast, as are the lugs on the spacers, but care still has to be made to get the frame square and the axles in line prior to soldering the spacers in place.

I would have to say that the Comet frame set up which I have become accustomed to over the past year needs a lot more care in setting up, even with the frame jig. Either I am getting better at making things square or the Finecast design is the better of the two. But really this is horses for courses, each design has its merits.

Looking ahead I can there will be some work to do to fit the replacement Airfix five pole motor onto the new frame. I am a bit worried that any cutting that will have to be done could weaken the frame's integrity. But right now I can solder in the brass bushes and test fit the new wheels.
