Evidence of Autumn

Following on from the last post, here's a bit more progress on the scene around the level crossing.

Mikkel made a good point that the shop looked like it could use a bit more weathering compared to the crossing gates. I decided to have a go at painting the window frames something other than white, which I reckon has helped to tone down the overall look of the building and made it more of a piece with the larger scene:

I've also begun to add some foliage in and around the buildings, with a bit of Autumn tinting to contrast with the "high summer" on the left hand side of the module. Yes, the season changes from left to right - but as the middle bit is mainly buildings, I reckon the transition can be managed without looking too jarring.

I've also done a bit of moving around of the buildings on the other side of the road, filling the previously vacant area with the cottage which was originally further up the hill. It was blue originally, then a sort of cream shade, but I've now given it another repaint to make it white. Where that cottage used to be is a Hornby Skaledale cottage, which I thought would look good with a bit of treatment to help it blend in with the existing buildings. As for the timber framed building, one of Superquick's finest, I repainted it a sort of creamy/orangey shade but on balance I think it'll look better going back to the original white. The idea is to keep the overall palette fairly restrained, with the buildings not trying to compete for colour with the foliage, which will look vibrant enough on its own.

Cheers, and thanks for reading.

Oi, it's only solstice, can we wait a bit with the autumn please! :-)

Very nice Al, I think painting the windows has blended it all in even more. You are doing something with colours here that is a little unusual, I think. We often opt for fairly pale toned down colours, but you are demonstrating that fairly rich colours can work really well and result in a distinctive yet very realistic style if blended carefully. Great inspiration, thanks.

Ha - I agree, Mikkel - far too soon to start talking of autumn! How's the summer in Denmark? It's rather nice here, for a change.

Same here, spring and summer have been nice and sunny so far. Although now that the Danish holidays are approaching (we have them earlier here), it's immediately looking more cloudy and cold (grumpy mode!).

Autumn is a very nice season though. What month is your autumn section of the layout, September maybe? Beginning of 3rd week? You'll have to decide, this is an exact hobby you know! :-)
