The communities served by the CMER are spread across five principle locations.

Kinlochy

The small settlement of Kinlochy on Loch Tosh is built around the pier, which is the principal connection of the estate with the outside world. Kinlochy boasts a small, licensed public house with accommodation for walkers and other visitors, a boathouse, a general store, the estate workshops, the fuel tanks, a coal bunker, a refrigerated storeroom and a small bottling plant.

The Lodge

The laird lives in the main house, Clach Mhòr Lodge, where two cottages additionally house the cook and the butler. Clach Mhòr Lodge is set in a commanding position a mile-and-a-half from the shore, shielded from the wind, and its twelve bedrooms provide accommodation for visitors—usually well-heeled hunting or fishing parties. When fully occupied, the Lodge employs a staff of twenty.

Mains

The estate factor lives four miles further up the glen, at Clach Mhòr Mains, as do a few farm labourers and their families. The majority of the agricultural storerooms, byres and sheds and the workshop are at Mains, as is the schoolhouse for the twenty to thirty children on the estate. The estate nurse lives in a tied cottage by the Mains and runs the estate clinic in an annexe. The estate chapel and the Manse are located here too. The Mains ghillie manages the Lower beat from here.

Clachbeg

A small number of families lives at Clachbeg, a hamlet north of Strathan. A small quarry provides gravel and building materials for use on the estate, as well as blue and pink granite—the latter used to make curling stones. The tiny gold mine beside the Allt an Clach Beg is a two-man operation, owned by the estate but entrusted to the McGillivray brothers, Donald and Kyle. Clachbeg is also a hunting beat, whose ghillie lives in the hamlet. Clachbeg is also home to the distillery, which produces a small but steady supply of prized single malt for export as well as local consumption; casks are shipped from Clachbeg to Kinlochy for bottling.

Strathan

Strathan is the principle village of the estate, at the head of the glen, seven miles further up from Mains. The head ghillie, who manages the Strathan beat, and the Bealach ghillie live here. The head forester and several families engaged in farming, forestry and hunting all live here. The estate sawmill and the abattoir are located by the village. Electricity for the estate is generated at a small hydroelectric scheme on the Bealach branch, a mile above Strathan.
