Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

New Trackplan

One of the problems we've had with the trackwork was the realisation just over twelve months ago that the junction should have a trailing crossing in front of it. After deliberating what to do the decision was made to knuckle down and produce it. The problem was that the junction is on the side of the layout, to the right of the bottom of the first picture and therefore the only location that the cross over could go was on the bend, which was already closing in on the minimum that you'd want lar

Start of old track removal

(copied from old forum)   Slattocks Junction is the 18 x 13ft P4 layout being built by the Manchester Model Railway Society. The layout is being built to provide an antedote to the continual stream of P4 shunting planks. Yes, they are very good and very needed but large P4 layouts are very rare and those running large steam locos at a realistic pace are even rarer. Basically the group was bored with shunting layouts and wanted to prove that large P4 locos can work at speed on a reasonable size

ebay clunker - O gauge Jinty kit

Oh no what have I done? Having had great succes in picking up the little 02 kit I placed a bid on another kit on Ebay. All the experienced folks tell you never buy a part built brass kit without inspecting it closely. What did I do? There is certainly no fool like an old fool!   So what I bought at a bargain(?) price was potentially a nice kit. It's a Jinty from Connossieur and a kit that was recommended to me and I was thinking of buying new.     On receiving it I opened the box and thi

ebay gem - O guage 02 diesel kit

As ever I can't help looking for a bargain. Something in me just won't let me buy something at full price. Fortunately I have managed to pick up a little gem of an O gauge kit from Ebay in the last month or so. For some reason hardly anyone placed a bid on it and it went for a song despite retailing for something like ?‚??199! The seller advertised it as a part built kit with one or two items missing and even provided a list of the bits missing. Always up for a challenge I figured I could source

Sounding better - improving the Bachmann 66 sound

First up let me say I am a sceptic when it comes to sound fitted models. Having said that I did purchase a Baccy 66 from my main supplier, Ebay, sometime last year. Well at 90 notes it would have been rude to let somebody else buy it! Here she is on the kitchen table which I have been known to refer to as my "workbench".     When I first got the thing I found it very interesting though none too spectacular. I had a bunch of issues with the sound resetting and it generally did not sound very

Special visitor to Callow Lane

My thanks to Brian (Taz) for bringing his new City of Truro for me to have a look at the other day. I really do like this one, and my resistence to getting one is wearing extremely thin.   I thought she would look good posing on Callow Lane, seeings as this is the only layout that is normally kept in a 'put up' state at home at the moment (for construction).   But no, I didn't do a quick P4 conversion job - we simply balanced the loco on the P4 track, and mighty fine she looks too!

D1031 "Western Rifleman" (JLTRT)

Tuesday 3rd June 2008: I decided to do some work to the Western today. This is a direct result of seeing the progress "Druid" is making with his version of the same kit - thanks Druid!   I last did some work on my Western about six months ago, but for some reason, I forgot to post it on RMweb at the time.   Anyway, from the outset, I decided to illuminate the cabs, headcodes and marker lights. However, because certain parts will be inaccessible once the kit is built, a bit of forward planni

Ex SR PMV (Slater's)

Sunday 6th April 2008: Most of my recent workbench activity has been focused on building a JLTRT Castle, but I fancied a change today. Fed up with removing cusps from etches and soldering bits of metal together, I decided to raid the cupboard and get stuck into some styrene instead.   I thought it was time to do some more to my Slater's PMV, which last saw the light of day last October. I had opted to bond the roof to the sides/ends, rather than fit it last. This enabled me to get a gap free f

7028 "Cadbury Castle" (JLTRT/Mitchell)

Wednesday 26th December 2007: An all day modelling session today saw a bit more progress on the JLTRT Castle. Previous visitors may remember my attempt at modifying the Slater's wheels, specifically, trying to improve the appearance of the balance weights by incorporating a representation of the stays that pass from front to rear. This was the first one I finished....     Although pleased with the end result, I didn't relish the prospect of doing another five - repetition is not something I

From Bulleid to T9 Nutter?

Without realising it, I have gone a bit mad on T9's... some how I now have 7 of them:   30120 renumbered from a donor 30724 by TMC, I've recrested to it's final BR Late crest livery (TMC had it as preserved in BR Lined Black Early Crest), real coal in tender.   30288 being renumbered from 30285 on an early crest, currently being lightly weathered, front coupling pocket removed, still on workbench.   30310 as bought, except for real coal in tender.   30338 renumbered from a donor 30310, l

Byfleet bus

I've purchased an OO bus - simpy because it's one of the local busses that goes through my village; Byfleet, and as an early birthday present to myself (which is tomorrow). There's certainly some very nice model busses in OO scale.       G.

LNER wagons

Slow progress over Christmas, due to other distractions (food, beer etc) but I've managed to get some LER wagons completed. I bought some old 3H LNER 6 plank wagon kits off Ebay as these seem to be well regarded. In the end they turned out to be pigs to build - the quality of the detail is first rate, but assembling them was a nightmare as the corner joins didn't mate properly and endless filing and filling was needed!   The one on the right was built as per the kit as a Darlington built examp

Back again, and still a Luddite

Hello again   Just to prove that I am still alive, here's my first post to my new blog - here's hoping that it's all working as it should. I have to confess a certain aura of the Luddite when learning how to conform to the new order; I find it quite complex compared to the previous RMWeb but I'm sure that I'll get used to it in time.   I've decided to blog my "locomotives" thread and "layout" thread separately; "Southwich" is still very much alive but somewhat denuded since I decided that

    • So far ordering direct has worked well. The only tax on electronic bits seems to be VAT, that is calculated at the site checkout.    I use paypal so that gives a layer of protection, orders arrive here in a couple of weeks.
    • Very interesting, Mike. I hope your research is being noted somewhere.    I like how Snake/Viper where briefly renamed Teign/Exe. Talk about old wine on new bottles!      It seems odd, in this day and age, that the GWR would even consider trying out single-drivers on the Devon banks. Perhaps it shows the limited experience back then, or that the GWR simply didn't give a hoot about the SDR.
    • Good to see things developing, Keith.   That space beside the bed seems a bit left over. Room for an extension, perhaps? 😄 The frames look good, it's very satisfying when you can re-purpose things.   On the subject of planning, I personally think that there's a risk of overdoing it and not getting anything done. I'm the overthinking type myself, so I often have to force myself and just get on with things. That involves compromises and occasional mistakes, but it keeps me moti
    • Not something I know much about, but it looks ingenious Dave. And yes that control panel is very slick.   You seem to have good experience of ordering parts from China? I suppose there must be import fees, but with those prices I suppose it's worth it.
    • Thanks Mike.   The Noch cows are tempting- the poses and expressions are excellent. But I have no field to put them in! And I already have some John Day whitemetal  cows, which are OO scale and also quite good. Maybe I should start off with those, my cattle wagons need occupants!       Sounds like Simon and Therese have the right kind of experience and skillset to pull it off. In the photo of the cafe, the layout looks just the right size to me. I'm sure my 91
