Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Size matters- TT vs H0

No sooner than I have assigned baseboards (ie stripped back parts of Steinrücken to frame level!) to the new project, I find myself back to the thorny question that will not go away... is H0 right for me?   In spite of having taken the plan of an existing model and actually having baseboards slightly larger than the original, I feel that it is rather cramped. In photographs I have seen online of the City Classics display layout, it really doesn't look cramped, so I wonder what I am doing wr

Winter module (continued)

Today I spent an enjoyable afternoon progressing with the winter module. After applying plaster I gave the whole lot a coat of white acrylic in the hope that this would look sufficiently snow-like in its own right, but it's clear that there's more to be done; the texture of the plaster still shows through so I guess I will have to apply another layer of polyfilla or something similar. In time there will be some hedges and undergrowth, suitably snow-covered, and a few wintery trees. No shortage o

A Fruit cocktail

The recent Christmas and New Year break has enabled me to get my finger out and finish off a few outstanding projects, most notably some 12t van kits.   Roof issues aside (I've left these alone as I'm game for an easy life!), the Parkside Dundas PC42 BR fruit van kit is a most useful one indeed and can produce 3 main variants of ordinary 12t van aside from the kit as intended.   Below are sides in various states of modification.   Starting with the raw bodyside - note the shelf brackets an

A sneak peak

I thought I'd model something a bit different( for me) this Christmas. Years ago I brought a Bachmann class 46 when it was first upgraded. The intention was to use the bogies and motor in a class 40 but that never happened. The Bachmann class 46 languished on a shelf until earlier this year when I decided to resurrect it. I bought a Craftsman conversion kit to convert it to a class 44, and some Fox etched nameplates. I followed the Craftsman instructions for the conversion. When it came to

Station Building and track progress

After several lunchtimes the Scalescenes small station building is complete, just needs a coat of varnish     Footbridge next!   Track is coming along, I spraymounted a section of the templot plan to some MDF last night, applied double sided tape and stuck down a yard of sleepers and soldered up the track - pretty fast progress for me. Went straight for the phosphoric acid flux and 188 deg leaded solder, lovely job   I plan to notch the rails where the joints should be then fit cosme

Christmas 2010 - Didnt go to plan

Happy New Year.   My plan for getting this railway started made a good start on christmas day with the receipt of some track and turnouts with a couple of point motors as well.   Boxing day, things took a turn for the worse when I managed to slip down two quarry tile steps at my parents house. Such a small fall but somehow managed to fracture the radial head of my right arm and a couple of ribs. The arm is well on the mend and already typing again howver the ribs are a killer! I have the

All wagons are equal but some are more equal than others

Or in other words all 16 ton mineral wagons might look the same at first but they are not all equal.   In this case we have a slope sided 16 ton mineral from Parkside , a standard 16 ton with morton brakes from Airfix and finally on the right a fitted 16 ton with the longer wheel base, tie rods between the W-irons and a somewhat rusty bauxite livery.     All I have to do is remember to couple the fitted wagon next to the locomotive to increase the brake force available.   David

Building a couple of wagons.

I got a slightly unexpected parcel today. That might seem unkind, but it was the last thing I ordered, so it really isn't meant that way. So, today, I have been mostly building... The N gauge society Mink C. I thought I'd start with something simple, and this was. A big thumbs up for that, A small thumbs down for the documentation, I know times are hard, but surely it would be worth reprinting the instructions rather than include an 'oh, by the way, half the instructions are now out of date. Trials and tribulations

This is my first attempt at a blog, so if I get it all wrong, I apologise. Just felt it was time to share the experience of trying to adapt bits of the old layout to suit the new space. Essentially, this is 'Chris Leigh Unplanned'. I've always told people that planning a layout is essential. So just why I decided to go ahead without a plan, I'm not sure. The old (HO) layout was round the walls of a room and viewed from inside. Now its an island location, viewed from the outside. That meant that

Mezzanine floor

Some time ago, Miss Prism suggested that I could add a mezzanine floor to one end of “The depot” for extra goods storage.   I liked the idea, and sought inspiration in some of the larger GWR depots, including (very loosely) the arrangements at Hockley. I tried to build the structure to look like an afterthought, added by the GWR when it ran out of storage space on the ground floor decks. The visible part of the mezzanine is imagined to connect to a more expansive off-scene sectio

Long time - no progress

2010 was not a good year for me, and consequently not a good year for my modelling. This time last year I returned to work part-time, which was built up to full time over 3 months. Then I was put in a position where I had no choice but to resign. In my line of work this meant not only losing my job, but losing my home aswell. So Mrs 65243 and I needed to find a new home and then move. I also needed to find a new job - a task that I haven't completed yet, although I have been doing agency wo

From: Llewellyn yr Injin

Or, in English, 'Llewellyn the Engine' (with apologies to the late Oliver Postgate). It is now some time later and finally, it is finished, as much as anything ever is. If only the weather had been a little better then these photos might have come sooner, and been more respectable. Still, I'm quite pleased with it and I hope it's been worth the wait. The real thing looked like this: http://www.flickr.co...57626051884553/ and more shots can be had here, courtesy of George Woods.

Bachmann SDJR 7F Test Runs

In real life I'm very impressed by the smooth running qualities - sadly not seen here on YouTube.   For my original review and some nice stills, follow this LINK.

Shark Attack!

Today was one of those days when I painted two wagons and got the colour of both wrong the first time!   This shark started off bauxite but then I realized it should have been black for my chosen period.   Got a few assorted fish to go in front of it to work on now.     David

G scale progress

Well I haven't had that much time to do anything modeling wise but did manage a couple of hours today. I was able to finish detailing the frames with rivets and make thin slithers to hide the unsightly cut marks on the outside frames. I had hoped to remove these and rebuild them but a layer of araldite on the inside proved too stubborn. The cylinder has been given some extra detail plus horn blocks and skirts have been added similar to those found on a De Winton. I was able to make up a nameplat

Small scale jottings.. 'N' Victoria Bridge and 'T' Bubble Car

A brief update tonight, having spent a fabulous day on the 1:1 scale Severn Valley Railway. There are few places in the world these days where one Manor class will take you uphill in the morning and another one comes to fetch you in the afternoon. Superb!   Here is the mini Victoria Bridge in situ, a fantastic advert for N gauge as it fits in all this space to run a realistic length train ( eight carriages and a loco just fit!) and yet can be carried around under one arm. ...that is just the

Callow Lane signalbox - part 2a - the new lever frame

Here are a couple of photos of the new M.R. style lever frame, which I decided I ought to build, following some discussion last night on whether the GWR-style frame was really appropriate for the Midland box at Callow Lane.   In short, it was not appropriate, so I built the basics of the lever frame base from plasticard last night, and added some modified etched Smiths levers today.   The levers are set at 6" centres, which is how earlier M.R. frames were arranged. My thanks to Keith Norgrov

A little larger than usual... modifying moves to G-scale

When I started the LGB project a few weeks ago I wasn't sure if it was going to lead here... But it has - so this first blog entry charts my first steps in transfering my 4mm detailing, painting and weathering skills to the larger G-scale. For those who aren't familiar with garden railways LGB is approximately 1:20ish, running on 45mm track with mainly European prototypes. This project is based upon the ubiquitous LGB post van that has been in the range for 30 years. Today I have str

Welcome to my Blog - N gauge on a grand scale!

It all happened back in September. Four of us took a road trip up to the N gauge show, Leamington. A few weeks before, I ahd purchased a KATO SP Daylight GS4 and Coach set and was looking for inspiration. Don was new to modelling and was bowled over in amazement at the variety of layouts, especially the large modern image ones of 20 feet plus, allowing the long rakes to vanish into the scenery. A week or so later, we went with JohnDMJ down to the N gauge group at Sompting to have alok at their m

Am I posting too often>

I don't know. But I've got another break in the wallpaper stripping schedule. In fact I've finished for today. So, I figured it was as good a time to... get back to talking about my layout. For various reasons, I've not done much at all with it over the last few months. Part of it is being busy with decorating, part of it is being busy writing, part of it is being busy doing cross stitch, and part of it is... not something I really feel like talking about. Suffice it to say that I've got some

More on the Convert and Railcar 602.....

Bit more work done on the Convert kit, gradually beginning to take shape, basic body built up, a few detailing bits need attaching yet (footsteps, doors etc) and still needs a bit more fettling, There are also 20 upper deck seats to build and fit..................they may be ommitted and something else fitted. Anyway as they say a picture is worth............       Quite pleased with it so far, there's a couple of slight modifications that I need to make, (the visor on the upper deck bal

Brackhampton - a start at a track plan

Thanks to Mikkel's help and a bit of lateral thinking, in that I could only save the screen print's in a format which I couldn't upload, so I ended up printing them off and scanning them in, here are two track plans for the environs of Brackhampton station.     This first one shows the overground approach with four tracks from left to righ the main up and down lines and then the relief up an down lines. These run into from extreme top to bottom, platform 12/11, bay platforms 10 and 9, platf
