Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Chagford - My first posting

Hi All   I have been working on layout today! I model in 2mm finescale.   Today I have run my first train on the layout using the non DCC option on the controller, as of yet I don't have a decoder equipped loco yet.   Lisa

"Class 29 - D6130"

The class 29 is starting to take shape - it is destined to become a two-tone green example, D6130, which was seen at Dundee Tay Bridge on occasion.       There's very little I have had to do to the model other than fit the etched (shawplan?) windows, which greatly improve the look of the cabs, then re-prime and paint using Railmatch British Railways Locomotive Green.   I have only done one yellow warning panel so far, and it needs stripping really and starting again, it's too thick

Office Block

Over the past few days I have been working on a new structure to replace the old brick one that was a recycled model from an earlier layout. It didn't really fit the scene and I don't think it was as good a standard as I would have liked.   The new building.             John   RJR

coombe junction - moorswater - 37207 William Cookworthy and chums...

Update   Good evening,   Was hoping to continue with the roof cladding this week but realised I had used up all my supplies of the Evergreen sheeting so will have to wait until next week now   Work has been progressing on 4 no class 37's required for the layout. Two of which will feature in the 80's period of running and the other two perhaps only making guest appearances as they fall outside my chosen time period.   It's a sign of old age creeping in when you need to label each loco wi

Bristol Barrow Road - Signal Box - Concrete Base and Roof Slates

Following my recent posting I received two constructive comments from RMwebbers.   I forgot the box stands on a concrete plinth and that there should be steel RSJ's to support the 2 central pillars above the lead out slot. This has now been rectified by adding a layer of 60thou plasticard around the base with the top edge champered. I have just made the pair of transverse 'I' beams to go under central pillars - not fixed yet so not in the attached photos. Thanks for your comments Keith.   An

Making progress... well, sort of.

Well, it's been... a tricky few days. Partially, it's been a case of trying to get the bottom of the boiler round. I've tried it with, and without the... is it a weight? I don't know. Well, whatever it is, it sits on top of the chassis and is screwed down. The problem is that whether it's there or not, there's stuff on the chassis that sticks up into the bottom of the boiler. The fact that the Brit boiler isn't quite as rounded at the bottom as I thought... (Argh) I've tried about five or s

Graham Farish Black 5

Hi all!   Until I visit the parents again in 3 weeks time, there won't be much progress on the boards. So in the meantime, here's a look at the Graham Farish Black 5 released last year.   The Mid Hants Railway have recently finished the restoration of Black 5 45379 to running condition (http://www.watercressline.co.uk/The-Works/Locos/14) so at the Doncaster show I managed to pick up a Farish example for a reasonable price. Eventually it will be renumbered to match the full size version.

Cheetham's Metals OO gauge module

Although I usually stick to the CRM's 0n30 modules, I decided to construct a section for the OO gauge modules, for a change. It will (not surprisingly! be based on a scrapyard/metal reclaimation yard and will comprise of a through line, loop, headshunt and sidings. As it will sometimes be used as part of the OO modules and sometimes, by itself, the electrics will have to be arranged so that through running for the modules is not affected by shunting in the yard. As it isn't narrow gauge, I've ad

Population explosion....!

Spent some time over the weekend populating Llanybarachel with the new Bachmann/Farish range and some I had left over from previous layouts, mostly Modelscene packs A + B which my Dad painted... Layout has a bit of "life" now, albeit artificial Some pics will appear on main topic thread.... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/29413-llanybarachel/page__pid__330482__st__25#entry330482

Detailing a Deltic - Cab details, bogies and some minor bodywork refinements - P4 Deltic Pt 8

I really must find a taller driver   Cabbing it   A few weeks ago I decided to try to do something about the void that is the interior of the cabs. Normally, once the bodyshell is attached with the glazing, not much is visible, but I think that some resemblance of the bulkheads would be good to have. Then whilst browsing a well know auction site one evening I found a photograph of some 7mm Deltic cab detailing components for sale… and this formed the basis for my idea. I de-bodied one of m

Class 22 - Part 4

The roof detail goes on...   Choice of Prototype   So far I hadn't really done anything that had limited the choice of loco that I could build, but on reaching the roof that was about to change because this is one place where there were lots of variations.   The pilot scheme locos D6300-6305 were ruled out because they had a different layout for the louvres and doors on the sides and would need a different body etch. They also had a much simpler roof layout than the production series locos

The point where you say enough is enough and cut your losses.

This morning I posted the following update in a previous blog Well having spent a couple more hours looking at this point this afternoon I have been unable to resolve the issues that were occurring. I did manage to get a partial improvement but nothing that could be relied upon. It appears that at some point the track work immediately before the point had been knocked at some time destroying the angle that the stock approached the blades. This meant that the wheels would lift over the blade a

Markinch Style Shed Update-home for A4 60009

Hi   Work is progressing on the new home for A4 60009 Union of south Africa. As I need to free up space for the new shed I have removed one of the main fleet's depots and relocated it. This has given an opportunity to remove all the locos from Glasburgh to put down some 'concrete' for both the shed and relocated depot sheds. First layer of concrete laid and drying. Meanwhile, back at the builders the new shed has received a couple of coats of paint on the roof and timber wall. The fitting of

Newbury a quick photo update.

Right photos are now on the computer so I'll pop a few of the better ones up here.       A quick view showing the front of the layout. I was in the centre and the layout could be seen from both sides. Lucky that I had modified it so that it was viewable from both sides!       And a view from the back. Something that strikes me having looked at this is the expanse of hardboard that you can see on the back of the main board. I know that at many exhibitions this would not be seen but I

First lot of track :)

Some photos of today's track laying...   The track is a mix of Peco 009 Mainline and N gauge code 55 for the diamond crossing.     Testing the curves on the entrance to the tunnel with a piece of temporarily placed flexi track...

22T Tube

Another outcome of my recent workbench tidy up is this Parkside Tube. I built a pair of these (one fitted the other unfitted) very early in my return to modelling and they have languished on and around the workbench, being subjected to various painting/weathering experiments ever since. Other than missing brake levers and door bangs the fitted wagon was in reasonable condition and the paint finish was looking pretty good so I decided to have a go at fixing it up. I salvaged some replacement b

13T High (dia 1/034)

Here I am at the end of a week off work, with that Sunday night - back to work tomorrow feeling. Amongst other things this week I have managed to tidy up a few projects which have been littering the workbench for some time. One of these is this little highfit. Basic ingredients are an ancient Airfix body and Parkside underframe, the following photo highlights the other bits: Buffers are from Lanarkshire Model Supplies - first ones of theirs I've used and very nice they are too, brake gear

What have I done!?!

Hello   On the way back from the Newbury Show yesterday I decided to pop over to Highclere Station as it was 10 mins drive away. Apart from ending up with very wet and muddy shoes (it was a bit of a swamp there!) I managed to get a few more photos, mainly of the trees without leaves but also some more of the bits left there...         I hope they are reconisable!   Anyway, feeling a bit inspired from seeing Witney and Avonwick I also made a start on the second board trackwork....

coombe junction - moorswater - 10,000 - thank you...

Good evening,   Whilst checking my blog settings earlier, I realised that my blog has now been viewed 10,000 times since I began, so this being my 76th entry I would like to thank you all for your support, comments, enthusiasm and motivation for this blog. Whilst there has been the odd diversion along route (Kyle in a boxfile) this layout began life 25 years ago in my head and finally got going in 2007 shortly before we left the UK.   I thought a few (some previously unseen) images to show w

Tanks a bunch

The first of the 45 tonners is now almost complete, with just tidying up and painting left to do. i also need to fit the catwalk that fits above the buffer beam, on the solebar, but will fit that once the barrel has been painted.     The kit instructions are quite straightforward, but I did struggle with one bit, folding the legs on the catwalk. I got my head around it eventually, and took the following photo to illustrate the correct way of folding:     The legs need to be folded ov

More on the gear front..

Wow, I will just start by agreeing with Pete and say what a fantastic and helpful set of responses to reply to individually, so a collective big thankyou! I realise on looking at the packets the gears came from, that only one of the gear set I am thinking of utilising is in fact Association - the others are from different sources eg Mikroantriebe of Germany, and I think, Nigel Lawton? The small 12T gear was originally designed for a 1mm axle which I have opened out to 1.5 to match the 28T - wh

I'm reviewing... the situation.

Well, I'm torn. On the one hand, I've got a nice little N gauge layout. I'm quite happily modifying locos. Whether we're talking streamlined B17s, Granges, pacific Jubilees... On the other hand... I get frustrated. I'd love to be able to build (say) one, or both, of the two 2-8-4T locos that never got off the LMS drawing board. Or the 2-10-2T that the GWR didn't make... (I suppose I could use a Dapol 9F chassis for that one, so maybe that's a bad example) or maybe a 72xx or 42xx. Or maybe the
