Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Small Scenic test-piece: to become even smaller!

A few things have come to light over the last week:   Firstly, as built the board does not fit in its intended storage place, in spite of my best efforts of measuring up etc.   Secondly, I'm going to scrap and totally rebuild the goods shed so far having compared it with the plans of the real one on which its based.   Thirdly, the train shed building has been revamped, it did not need a total rebuild progress shots soon.   The first bit is currently the biggest problem, I've got a repl

State of Play - Overview of the Layouts

So far there are five layouts in the Farthing series, each depicting a section of the same overall station. The trackplans are simple affairs, but when linked to fiddle yards all contain a certain operational scope. The layouts so far are:   1. The Branch Bay. This was the first of the layouts and is complete. It shows the bay platform at Farthing ca. 1904-1908, and draws on features from the bays at Newbury station.         2. The Goods Depot. This

Servo Motors as Point Operators

Some notes about the servos.     Lack of experience in whatever area of expertise seems always to introduce problems of gigantic proportions until new experience proves such problems to be non-existent really. This was certainly true of my introduction to these servo thingies!   The electronic kits and instructions produced by MERG are so well designed that the part that I had originally been concerned about tackling, - soldering the tiny electronic components, - offered absolutely no prob

Welcome to Meanach

26035 working 2P14 Tulloch - Perth School train.   Welcome to Meanach. A lonely passing place set half way between Tulloch on the West highland line and Newtonmore on the central highland main line. A proposed route for mainly freight traffic that in this parallel universe was opened in 1905. A hamlet dominated by high hills and the perthshire mountains amid ferocious rivers with the sound of EE Type 3s slipping on the heavy gradients either side of the island station.

Time flies by - refocus of efforts

Ok so nearly 18 months have gone by since my last post and you may be say what now or you may not be! So what is new in Backofanenvelopeland for a start off I have made a new years resolution to actually achieve something this year or throw it all in and start basket weaving or something. In reviewing my responsibility landscape I have come the the conclusion that I need to have a number of interests to keep me going and so when the muse wains I can flick to something else. So those areas are l

Building the 2mm Scale Association kit for an 09 - Part 2 Motor and Gears

13th Jan 2009: Last night's session was to be remembered for the things I forgot, like my glasses, and soldering iron.   First of all, I corrected the previous week's mistakes, as pointed out on the VAG. The errant frame spacer was repositioned to the top of the frames, and Dave Stratten let me have a spare motor bearing so that I could complete the gear box. Getting the worm onto the tube was tricky, but do-able. However, it seemed to close up the tube so that the motor not longer fitte

Baseboard progress

Hi All.   Now I'm up at the parents where the baseboard for Ropley is living temporarily I've been able to make some progress.   There are a couple of small level changes over the yard at the real location and I have been thinking about a way to tackle these for a while now. Basically you have the main line & loop through the station on one level, then the wheel drop shed immediately behind this on a very slightly higher level, then the main yard on yet another slightly higher level ag

Another stupid turnout question...

Greetings. I have now pretty much wired up my 5 point motors via DPDT switches, and the result does look a bit like a weird underwater frondy plant. I am wishing at this stage that I had used the alarm installation cable to keep the wires in one sleeve! Anyway, onto the question, with reference to the wiring diagram in the previous post:   I have a 9V supply ready to power the motors; therefore I assume that 9V must be fed into the rails at points X and Y from the motor connections. In the beginning

I started chronicling the construction of my 09 on another blog elsewhere, but it did not seem to get much readership, so I have now started moving it across to rmweb where it might be of use/interest to more people.   5th Jan 2007. Was it really that long ago I started building my 2mm Scale Association 08 kit? This is what I wrote then:   After checking the box contents, and the contents of the CD on a laptop, construction started. The instructions are clear and well illustrated, but definit

Truckin' on

As you may, or may not know my layout has a canal / coal interchange siding loading coal from canal boat to the railway. When deciding a company to undertake this I spotted at work some Parkend Navigation Collieries wagons (which were bought by a customer before I'd managed to buy them) so since then I've been buying them up on e-bay, one came with weathered frames which kind of forced my hand with weathering, but then again, saying ''forest of dean'' and a running number of 330 wouldn't really

coombe junction - moorswater - inserted...episode II

Update   Good evening - following on from last time, it was time to progress the inlaid track area. Not really something I was looking forward to again, as last time it became obvious that it was a two part process, however, the base coat to the remaining area of the dries had to be done, so best get on with it.   A few changes from last time to note.   Firstly I wanted to try and get a reasonably clean edge, especially to the front edge as looking at the prototype, the concrete has been

Bristol Barrow Road Update

For those of you who might be wondering about the lack of any post for the past couple of weeks the answer is I am on an enforced break from modelling due to the need to redecorate two rooms in the house   It's not all decorating as I have found some time to investigate how I am going to make replacements for the mdf roof trusses as supplied by York modelmaking, not that there is anything wrong with their laser cut items, it's just that I have decided the roof will need to be removable in ord

2011 - First new photos. Bluebell Branch Line

Hi!   First new update of the year to my website. A great line up at the Bluebell Branchline Gala, though the weather was pretty poor, leading to some less than satisfactory shots! I havn't yet seen anyone else's photos from the Sunday, presumably due to the weather.   Here's the link to the new 2011 Page.   As usual, comments are welcome!   Still having trouble with attaching samples to this blog, but I think that I have been successful this time!

Cul Uisge - Kyle in 4 feet - Update Time!

The blog hasn't been posted to for nearly a year so I though a quick update was in order.   Not a massive amount of progress due to health problems and getting distracted by building some 1980s Strathclyde DMUs and EMUs but the fiddle yard has had an extra siding added to add a little flexibility.     The station building has had the metcalfe slates replaced with slaters plasticard ones and a coat of paint. It looks a bit better but still needs some more weathering.     Finally, a vi

Enough is Enough

Sad to say but the final bit of detailing for the 2-8-2 has defeated me.   The 2-8-2 will not have lubricator/slide support brackets. The lubricators will be glued to the bodyshell and so lubricator linkages will not be featured either.   I just don't have the time/patience/skills to fabricate these brackets from scratch, the tolerances involved getting it all to fit are too tight for my rough and ready try it and see approach.   The good news is that the painting can start as soon as I've

Yard and Goods Shed

I am amazingly a little bit ahead of schedule. I am sure this won't last! A few hectic hours work and another dent in my credit card completed the trackwork in the yard. I also did a temporary goods shed from the metcalfe one. Here's the track, which has all its droppers soldered on and is ready to paint and wire. It always looks so blocky and clumsy before painting but having seen the work involved I am glad i didn't have to build all those sets of points! The goods shed is a compromise,

Part 11: Downtown Deco kits 2

I have built some more on my Downtown Deco buildings, and it's great to see them painted and detailed . I have started to paint my Adams Ave # 2:     And I made sure to get some variety on the brick color and concrete. Then I put some signs on them that I've printed out: Here is how it looks when placed on the layout:   Adams Ave # 1 is also being "finished"....   Adams Ave # 3 is also getting some work on it as well:   I have also renovated an old laser cut kit (JV model
