Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Kidmore N Gauge Layouts

I have now added a new layout to my "Kidmore" series of micro N gauge layouts.   "Kidmore Depot", as yet uncompleted, may be seen at www.kidmorengauge.weebly.com. The layout in it's uncompleted form had its first outing at the open day of the Berkshire Area Group of the N Gauge Society.   I expect to be starting a new semi-permanent layout in May which will break my own self-imposed standard of not building layouts greater in size than 4 sq ft, this will be simply called "Kidmore". The l

Now, where's the Satin Varnish ......

Loco body all lined out and I've picked out some of the pipework in very much the same way as Hornby do on their current Britannias - although I've used a light grey for the lagging rather than white. I think this looks more subtle.       Yes, this is the deflector that got superglue over it and needed rubbing back and respraying as revealed on one of my status updates Those Narrow Planet plates do look the dogs     And finally, a quick shot of the cab showing the cream roof a

Got so tempted...

After a suggestion by bcnPete the other day, I nearly did go down the easitrac route, but... At the moment, I'm just going to use up the 80 that I've knocking around, and get my skills back up to snuff before I dive in to anything else. I'm hoping that the other half doesn't realise that this one that's on the workbench at the moment is not the last one to be built. So much the temptation, I've already been lurking around in the 2mm Finescale and wondering "what if?"   Another thing that did

PLN: Bishopthorpe Lane N.E.R - Plan 1

So after some manic days at work feeling to tired to do anything I finally got to play a bit with Templot and have firstly done the non 3 way version but feel this is not as elegant as the 3 way one that I roughly tried out, so some more playing with is needed to make this fit the area unless I go for the 3way challenge. It all needs tidying up and the timbers shoving etc, but the starting point has been made. Comments on any possible improvements greatfully accepted.   I have which will be a

A new era?

As another Bulleid sits completed 34082 615 Squadron and another is about to be given the one over 34055 Fighter Pilot, something else has arrived to be given the Toboldlygo treatment and it isn't Southern....   More on that in a bit here's another view of 615 Squadron     Right I've always had a soft spot for A4's and yes I've owned one before. Now another one sits in my intray..   Keep yer eyes peeled for updates...

They had 2 packs.   These come moulded i

A Very British Bulldog - 8 1/2 hours in

After a couple of days sorting out problems with various family members I managed to get a few hours to myself today.   I spent some time pondering the chassis issue (whether to separate or not) and perusing the building instructions, with some regret I've decided it's not really practicable. There is so much pipework etc that encases the wheels that to resolve it would mean iether cutting through the undergear at strategic points (in which case it would probably be very vulnerable to damage)

Bug Colours

I have managed to secure what is quite a rare beast...a non military vehicle kit in 1/35 scale, ideal for the time period and setting for the 891 project.   The Type 11 (or is that "two"?) Beetle is one of a series produced by what I believe is a French Company no longer in existence called Aeroplast.       I have not paid much for the kit (which is complete) and therefore if the quality is a bit off the mark then so what...it would be a nice little project to work on and improve.   An

Chagford - Layout Design 2

Hi All   Once the final layout size was determined, I then started to design the track layout.   At the initial stages I had decided the the main line curve would be 190mm radius. An arc of this radius was drawn on the front of the baseboard, using a ruler type compass. Templates for the various points were produced, complete with sleeper centrelines, using templot.     The point templates were laid out as shown in the photograph above. This allowed the lengths of the loop and si

Chagford - Layout Design

Hi All   I started to build Chagford before I stared blogging. So in this entry I will attempt to start to fill in the missing story.   Initially the layout was conceived as a circular layout rather in the style of Mark Fielder's Pizza and the baseboard was built as a circular board. But it soon became obvious that most containers are rectangular, and not having a car and using public transport, the baseboard was trimmed to make it fit.     The size of the layout is increase by using t

But a 100 or so years on and the Bath stone will have darkened with algae and pollution; to address this, the stonework has been dry brushed with various Humbrol matt enamels and darker washes to help blend theme in with the areas of the scene. Time to find some double sided tape...

After much umming and ahing about track plans, and location, I've finally come up with something... Which wasn't easy given the space I'd got and what my motive power pool currently is (mainly NSE branded diesels and a couple of multiple units).   The idea is a bit real world, but a lot of artistic license involved, and whilst the plan below had plenty of settrack pieces, most of the straights are going to be put together using lengths of flexi-track.       After thinking through where w

1F underway again

Greetings once more from sunny Bedford.   I had a day off to look after the grandsons today, so after I'd taken them on a train ride to Millbrook and for lunch at the Forest Centre near there, I took some time when they'd gone home to revisit my 1F project; which, as described elsewhere, has ( more or less) a body but no workings. (I have also been working on writing very long sentences) .   Work today:     This shows the state of play with the little tank engine, with the chassis und

Getting there...

In due course the diorama/layout shell will be painted black, so the effect in a dark room shouldn't be too different. That is the only computer manipulation - the actual layout is 'as is'.   I am still undecided what to place on the extreme right, but it's likely to be another building. I was

Some old bull for Tuesday

nevard_110411_brewhouseQ_IMG_9681_postcard_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Last night another quick dig through Ian Locksmith's print collection revealed another photo of the Brewhouse Quay on the edge of Bath. Judging by the angle, this one appears to have been taken from another canal boat and from the time around 1952 when the brewery had a major rebuild to get rid of the wartime damage - the barge to the left being used as a water-born skip.   Note the wharf side cran

Mind the Gap......

The trouble with lists is that they show you up.   So how far have I actually got with my ambitious list of jobs? Well.....   5 out of 6 points have had their drive wire replaced with 0.9mm wire . The other seems to work ok anyway. This has pretty well cured the problem of point blades not closing fully. One point , where the commercially available offset drive Tortoise mounting has been used (possibly from Exactoscale?) is still slightly uncertain , perhaps because I've not replaced the fin

Ballachulish- Lead us not into temptation.

Spent a few days in the vacinity of the Ballachulish branch last week, a fair amount of which can now be cycled and walked along. Strangely this did not provide the same lure as looking at pics of the old railway operating.   This is an unusal phenomenon for me as I often find visiting the sites prove to be more interesting than the old photos. I think I might have come to the conclusion that because of the location in relation to the 'tourist traps' of the West Coast may have dulled the attr

Bulleid’s on Display at Taunton, and also something for the sleepy film buffs…

As part of the RMweb SWAGLand meet at Taunton this coming Sunday (17/04) there will be a table top display of a variety of Bulleid locomotives and Roilling stock. Also on show will be a recently nearly finished Southern Cinema coach and also the elusive Bulleid ‘Inspection Saloon’ or sleeper coach 100s along with other Bulleid rolling stock.   Bullied pacific’s will present in force displaying a range of conditions that the engines could be found in during the 1946 to 1949 period. Chagford - Building 2mm Trainset Curves

Hi All   I use lead free solder, unlike most modellers who I know who bought several rolls of lead solder when lead free was introduced. This requires a higher temperature of 370° and since the pcb sleeper supplied by the 2mm Association are designed it requires very careful soldering, if you are not going to have the copper coming away from the base material. I use 9% Phosphoric Acid flux to ensure the sleeper is very clean and therefor I get a good quality solder joint.

Rebuilding a chassis.

Hallo again.   I have been looking at the 0-6-0 goods engine which would not traverse my pointwork. It was suggested it might be a back to back issue, so that was indeed my starting point. Unfortunately, the existing chassis couldn't be narrowed to allow the b2b's to be lessened a tad ( I was aiming for around 0.2mm), so I was forced to remake it from scratch. I have just taken delivery of a strip of 0.3 phosphor-bronze, so I thought I would try working with that. Here is a photo of the fi

I wish the trees in the garden would grow as fast (but not the weeds)!

Spent a few hours today planting trees and undergrowth on Abergynolwyn, just enough to fill the background in the photograph! However, I'm now running out of leaves and because I foolishly didn't put the labels back in the various bags when they were first opened some time ago, I will have to wait for Railex when, hopefully, I can pop along to Greenscenes to match up my samples.
