Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

A1 Models Hunslet - Steps and Bits.

I decided to give the loco some buffers the other day, which was not as straightforward as you'd think, something to do with one hole in the bufferbeam being .6mm lower than the other... I needed to open the holes out to 3mm to suit the Gibson buffers that I'm using so whilst one hole was simply opened out with a broach and tapered reamer the offending hole was moved upwards using a round file and broach alternately. Here's how it looked before I started, the low hole is on the right;     H

SECR Ballast van 4mm

HI All,   whilst I'm waiting for my 2mmFS track jigs to arrive, i have been working on a few unfinished 4mm kits that i have got in some boxes that have been there for a while.   The first one is a SECR Brake/Ballast van from a Cambrian kit.   As you can see i have made the ballast van version and i wasn't happy with the stantions at the open end and also the running boards on both sides so i have spent a little while making new boards.   A couple of the angle parts are not quite straig

Chattenden and Upnor Railway Baguley Drewry in 4mm scale, 009 gauge

Hi all,   i thought i would add my small account of building my Chattenden and Upnor Railway Baguley Drewry built from the RT Models kit in 4mm scale, 009 gauge.   I decided that i would build one for myself to go on my layout. Deciding which version was to prove hard. After looking at photos of new builds and in service of them abroad i decided that i would build it as near to original condition as possible to the Chattenden and Upnor Railway.   There was no diviations from the instr

Wheal Elizabeth modifications

Sorry for the lack of updates but I've been busy continuing with the programme of modifications to Wheal Elizabeth which will eventually result in passenger running. First came the removal of the loading dock and platform almost immediately after Trainwest. Next came the attachment of the new fiddleyard board and painting. Next the start of an overbridge based on Bugle. The stone work is from Kibri styrene sheets. Very good and not as pronounced as the usual Wills offerings. Then the additio

3rd time lucky

This is it for a while now, I promise! The more I use these oils, the more I like them, and the more I'm getting to grips with using them. The 3rd wagon is by far my favourite of the ones I've done recently, it just looks that bit better than the others.   I've used a photo of a different tank as a guide for this one, for a bit of variety: http://www.flickr.co...57603195747980/   The model:   I've used the same techniques that I've developed over the other two wagons, but have added m

X3900

Here is a quick update on one of my projects that I have been dabbling in over the past few weeks. This is the X3900 autorail. It is different from other Picasso Autorails in that this one and its sister X3896 were converted into salloons for the SNCF management (much in the same way that the EWS company train is on the British network Today). It was painted in a green livery with a white stripe that is not too disimilar at the ends to the DMU's being run in the United Kingdom. With the conversi

News from the Wagon Works: Shochood and Monobloc

A long time ago (over a year in fact) I reported progress on a - mostly - scratchbuilt Shochood B which stalled pending thonghts on how to tackle the hood. In the end, I took a look at what the military modellers do - since tarpaulins turn up on softskins all the time - and used Miliput for the ends and tissue over a former for the remainder. The tarp's on these vehicles were tailored to fit neatly over the top and were always with the wagon which carried branding to that effect so using tissue

76009 running out of steam?

So here we are approaching Expo EM at Bracknell. My plan was to have had the complete model built or at least minus a few finishing touches by this weekend. I imagined myself proudly showing off a beautiful model that purred around the test track getting admiring comments.   So what do I have... well little has changed since the last blog entry. I now have the tender picks ups fitted to the chassis but only seem to have the options of either having the pick-ups touch the wheels or having th

I have returned....

Yes, I'm back with more of my adventures with wagons and paint to try and acheive an realistic and artistic outcome for me and my hobby!   Also you'll get to see bits of the new layout at my club as well as the last few pics I took with the old one sad times.       First off, I've some a few more Bachmann vans, and had a crack with some Bauxite. The techniques I've used have been previously explained in previous blogs.         Next up is the bogie bolsters.     so far

Single Yellow

Progress on the wiring continues, though more slowly than I'd wish.   The three station signals were finished and duly installed. . Wiring has proved a rather lengthy and tedious process with 8 fine short wires and two resistors needing to be soldered under the boards for each one. Resistors have been fitted to scraps of veroboard and the various wires soldered to these small boards in situ: the job's done now , but it's taken an evening's work per signal. They are driven off the spare contact

TT2 - inaugural ribbon-breaking ceremony with 5 trains

Last night at DRAG, we held the official 'opening' of TT2, with five trains running at the same time on each of the five circuits (4 x P4 and 1 x OO). With other stock lined up on the loops as well, the 'start line' looked most impressive!   Getting ready:   Some individual items running before the 'grand ceremony'...   Dave Browne's J52:   Nick Cann's 108:       10800 & Re6/6's 11-CEP   My Class 25 makes for unexpected motive power on the 'Dawlish Donkey' set:

More power Igor!

I always knew that the second hand Sagami motor that I had installed in the 2-8-2 was, well, a bit weak. It ran hot even just connected to the gearbox.   Now that I'm in the final assembly stage when it came to running in the assembled chassis following painting it was clear that it was just not up to the job.   Thanks to artisan100 - Geoff at Comet Models a Mashima 1628 together with a new matching steel worm gear was supplied in doble quick time. I took the liberty of also ordering a 14mm

Obviously this wagon is not yet finished should anyone ask, the roof needs painting grey, the underframe black, then numbering, couplings and the all important weathering.   Parkside Dundas kits are mostly a joy to assemble, with little flash and carving required to get them to fit toge

Pipes, handrails and steps on D16/3

Alan Gibson handrail knobs got used for their intended purpose over the weekend, i.e. holding handrails rather than 'continuous springy beams'.Trying to bend the handrail for the front of locomotives with a continuous handrail is always a pain. The large pipe down the right hand side was held in brackets made for thin brass strip and soldered through holes in the boiler.   Finally this evening I fitted the two footsteps on the curve of the valance. There are also two more tiny ones to go on th

The novelty...

Still hasn't worn off. Sorry if this is now getting a bit boring, but I'm enjoying myself, which is the main thing! Tonights experimenting has revealed that the oils can be matted down nicely by stippling in talc.     as demonstrated on the W irons.   I've also been experimenting further with the addition of highlights and shadows, doing it a little more on this one than the others. Again, it seems to work, but I think it has to be carefully controlled, or the model could end up lookin

Joining viaduct sections

We think we've cracked the issue of how best to join sections together. The following photos show (using a couple of demonstration end sections and a 'real' pier) how it will work.   Rather than have a separate detachable pier for the joins, which creates additional problems regarding planting in the scenery and so on, the pier will be 'half' attached to one end of the two sections to be joined.     The dowel and the square-section pins provide for alignment. The pins have holes drilled

Thanks to Mr Lawton...

A couple of midimotors arrived on Friday, so I popped one of them into the little 1F, and have been running it in on my rolling road today. I then gave it a bit of work to do pushing wagons into sidings on Barnswell ( I quite like this name, as it tips a hat to the original Barnoldswick on which it is loosely based, but also makes it more Midlands-sounding. [i came up with a number of names actually, and I am not comitting myself just yet haha.]     Regards, Chris
