Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

More about 'Birch Vale'

For those who viewed my last input prior to this morning I've tidied up the picture/word relationship now so you may like a second viewing. There have been two articles about 'Birch Vale' published in the model press and those with access to a magazine archive may wish to read an article by Maurice Daniels in Railway Modeller, May 1968 and one by a certain D.Booth in British Railway Modelling, April 2000. Enjoy.

The Afternoon Goods from Evercreech

Click on the video below (sorry, I have no idea how to embed with wysiwyg - how about a raw html edit option?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBLo6pNjgaw    With Combwich all ready for RAILEX, a last chance to knock up a quick video of Ex-Midland Railway 0-6-0 4F No. 44417 arriving at Combwich with the afternoon goods from Evercreech Junction. August 1961. After arrival, the engine runs around its train, then shunts the short rake of old wooden wagons into the goods yard. And for the

Gateshead car CAD completed.......

The ex Gateshead cars for the proposed Grimsby and Immingham layout are now in production at Shapeways, final CAD shown below.             And a few of the real thing at Beamish earlier this year         Wonder if I can get a passing loop on the Corporation/Gilbey Rd street section in 20 x 11?

A record holder who has settled down...

...in a fashion stopped over at Frankfurt today:     This is the TGV POS set #4402, whose power units set the 574.8 kph (357 mph) world speed record on 3 April 2007 – coupled to specially adapted coaches with additional powered bogies. Today, however, the power units are coupled to normal trailers, though the decoration on them continues to commemorate the 574 kph ride. It was working the TGV 9552 service to Paris Eastern Station when I captured it upon departing Frankfurt Central Station

Playing trains.

Off to help Mark run Witney Euston this Sunday at Railex. Hopefully I will get the hang of this DCC stuff fairly quickly...and looking forward to getting my hands on that exquisite 0-6-0! Interesting to read Missy's blog about her frustrations with Highclere, especially as I always think of it as exemplary modelling in 2mm scale. My own interest has been waning on my far more modest layout, and am thinking that maybe salvaging the point motors and starting again, hopefully with better craftsm

Birch Vale Pictures from Honley Tank

I promised some pics. of my layout ˜Birch Vale' so here is a selection. First, can I say that ˜Birch Vale' is getting rather long in the tooth! It was first exhibited way back in 1968 having been built by Maurice Daniels in OO gauge. When Maurice moved house he could no longer house his layout and he put it in my keeping in order that it should not be destroyed. With Maurice's agreement I changed the track to P4 and later to S4, slightly extended the scenic section and added more complete hidden

The plank of many uses - 2

Hi all   Ballasting, some love it, some hate it, but there is no getting away from it. At some point it has to be done!   The mainline 'plank' featured earlier in this blog (and still alive - just) was a fairly simple thing to tackle, although I wasn't really that happy with the Woodland Scenics "fine" ballast I used. It wasn't really fine enough for N. So for Ropley I've been looking around for a better product for the main line & loop which is pretty standard as far as ballast goes wi

A new low....

Hello.   I am getting a bit frustrated with Highclere. So much so that today my mind has begun to think about taking it round the local tip and getting rid of it all. I have now been fighting with the joint inbetween the two baseboards for several days (solid) and am still no further forward than when I started which is getting really annoying.   I know its probably down to me having a bad day but thinking about the layout in general its a BIG layout and I just dont have the room for such a

Combwich at RAILEX!

nevard_101106_wycrail_IMG_8338_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Combwich will be having a rare outing at RAILEX this weekend (28 & 29 May 2011). Tim Maddocks' excellent SDJR Enginewood will be right next door, and the intention is to run occasional trains between the two layouts.   To add to the excitement of this rare operational marriage of layouts, it will also be a chance to see Model Rail's specially commission Sentinel in action - at least 2 months before the produc

Railfanning through the underbrush

...might be a suitable tag line for this image I snapped earlier this morning:       This was 139 314 from DB Schenker at the head of a tanker train which was just starting out of Frankfurt Western Station after a new driver had taken over the train from his colleague. As those familiar with German railways will probably know, the 139 is a modified version of the much more numerous class 140 freight loco, and fitted with dynamic brakes.

Update: Victoria Bridge Progress

Not much to report on the bridge diorama, other than some painting has occured and the scene is beginning to come together. The bridge itself has suffered with countless assemblies, straighening out attempts, re-gluings and other unpleasantness... so I really need to re laser cut a new 'fascia' of detail for the front face.. (the picture is kind to it, it is actually a bit of a mess, but it is all part of the learning process!)   45110 heads for Bewdley, must get around to painting a sunny blu

Introduction

Hi to all RMweb members   I'm new to RM so please excuse any first errors etc. I live in Ireland but was born in the UK so am very interested in all matters relating to UK rail. I have a blogsite - www.paternosterrow.blogspot.com if any would like to take a look.

Ropley - Point 3 & digging myself a hole

Hi all!   Well, point 3 is now completed, which means the main line section is now finished as far as track construction goes.   The ash pit in the line before the wheel drop shed has also been cut out so the next stage will be to build the walls & floor of this and the trackwork which sits on it.   Heres the model:     And the prototype:     The ash pit features many different cut-outs & part brick, part concrete construction so re-creating this is going to need a few m

Changes at Honley Tank blogg

I really should put something in this blogg rather more frequently than monthly! Trouble is that I started the blogg so as to report progress with my venture into EM and the building of a super-light-weight layout, but that venture is a very small part of my hobby activities and over the last few weeks EM modelling has been low on the list of those activities. I have however started on converting a Bachmann K3 to EM. My idea was to limit EM to converting RTR locos and stock ,but to continue sc

Neptune Road - Inglenook Adventure

It's been a while since I blogged. I have been pottering around on Neptune Road adding odds and ends as well as weathering wagons, fitting Kadees and shunting with the 63'er (Baby Warship/Class 22 if you prefer).   Local exhibition looming next month!   I had prepared some small playing cards to use, each one relating to a wagon. 8 wagons are placed on the layout, 8 cards are shuffled and 5 are drawn and the 5 wagons then have to be gathered in that order with 3 being "in the way". It can t

coombe junction - moorswater....get in...

Good afternoon,   After 2 months without blogging, although there has been progress, I thought I would try this as a mojo reboot:   moorswater viaduct 2FS   Not sure how its going to work yet, but I guess I will be tracking it in the layout topic with perhaps a few blog headlines   That's all folks...   Pete

Servo'd up

I've just bought some products from Tam Valley depot to control servos to act as the point motors. Similar speed as tortoises, and the servos cost £19.99 for 10. The Octopus II control unit + associated gubbins is working out at around £85 to control 8 points. Additional bits include 16 mimic board controllers which consist of a push button and two LEDs (single, not bicolour) for route indication, as well as Y servo leads to link two push buttons to one servo. I'm excited to see how these

Calling all 25kv modellers

Im curently in the process of updating my website and have decided to add a free forum aimed at 25kv electric modellers. Currently the forum is just my own layouts and projects but it would be good if a few others were intrested in being involved. The forum can be found at http://twentyfivekvmodellers.freeforums.org and hopefully the westcoast website will be updated over the next week. The new forum also has a built in chat room facility.   Other news I have been offered a set of class 83 bog

A Very Britsh Bulldog - Sandbox model & problems

It's been a while since the last post - been spending most of the time backward & forward to hospital, visiting the inspiration for this build. Without being overly dramatic, I don't think Jim will see the finished loco. An added bugbear was looking out of the bedroom window after a period of wind to see the shed-roof felt protecting the lawn! Fortunately it didn't rain before I got it fixed.   So, on with the build. It looked to be mainly a case of detailing parts - and the first to g

An 1116 Stabled in the Middle

...of some PW equipment:       This is Mittelweserbahn's 1116 911, one of two ES 64 U2 type locos owned by this operator – 1116 912 has the same general livery, but with red in place of blue. Here, the loco is seen stabled in between a rail grinder with associated material van and a self-propelled work car – how are these critters called in the UK, by the way?         And a broadside view of 1116 912 – whose UIC-TSI running number actually refers to it as a class 182 loco, sin

Grubby Green Planet

nevard_110523_planet_IMG_9983_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   This evening saw the completion of the little Roxey Mouldings 0-4-0 Planet diesel. Brewhouse Quay has been put away for a few days while I prepare Combwich for this weekend's RAILEX, so makes as ideal background to pose the little beast on. The wagon in tow is an ex-LBSCR wagon from a Smallbrook Studios kit knocked up a couple of weekends ago.   Here is a more close up view of the little loco   http://www.flickr

Update to "The Butterfly Returns"...

This evening I can report that after a small tweak of the "Hoffman" pattern point motor (made by "Conrad") the electrical side of matters is now complete. Indeed this momentous occasion was further enlivened by the running of the first locomotive over the track work. Now to the buildings and scenic side of matters.   John.

Ropley - Update & 2011 Challenge ponderings

Hi all.   Another small update on Ropley progress sees the second point now complete. This is the point at the Western end of the station loop and is on a very gentle curve which made things a little more interesting than the first one.   Test runs of various stock shows a little tweaking is necessary around one of the switch blades but otherwise everything seems to run quite happily through it!   Wiring has also started with the main DCC bus being installed and the first sections of trac
