Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Train detection to the nth degree

Following a trip to see the excellent McKinley Railway, and a conversation about the RFID projects I had done before I have started another project - just what I need, one more thing to add to the list.   What I am looking at is something that can read the train id and feed it back to the computer that is running the layout, however there is more to this than just reading the RFID data. The RFID readers I have used can not be placed close together, they interfere with each other.   So I need

The "Unnamed" state of play.

Since I already started building the boards and wiring etc, I guess I might as well say where we are. ( photos to follow) Currently the aim is to have a portable layout ( due to other requirements) that can shift houses every 6-24 months. As a result its been built in moveable sections of approx 60 x 90 cm with MDF Boards and structural pine sides painted and sealed with 50 cent tins of bunnings paint. First major lesson I have learnt is dont make boards out of structural pine. They weigh a to

The trials and tribulations of model railroad construction.

Welcome to Macs building blog..... A number of bight sized insights into a crazy mind.   After much reading, much inspiration and much trepidation I thought it was time for myself to throw my rookie hat into the ring. A foreward of warning, I know next to nothing about trains, next to nothing about real railways and next to nothing about doing anything propperly. All I know is that I love the looks of british steam loco's, I love the looks of the british country side, and I love creating fict

A Lack of wood

I have been messing about with that old lack shelf I left in the garage some months ago, wondering if it would save me another woodworking session or three when it came to baseboards. Here are a few pics, trying out building up from it with plywood and MDF. The result is not too light but seems solid enough. One of the reasons for chucking the last attempt was that I want something fundamentally small, so that I will want to get it out more often, and can sit it on the kitchen table with at leas

updates and so on

Not been posting on rmweb recently due to personal life issues (mainly health related). But have still been thinking about the plans I have with Natalie.   Finally got the 25W soldering iron at the weekend at DEMU Showcase for a better price than I could find online, so was happy, as had to cancel previous order as the site couldn't get stock.   Also picked up a few books and a couple of magazines. So came away happy without spending too much.   So pretty much have most of the tools I thin

Hythe Parkway - Magazines again!

Hi,   Just a small update today, it's been a long time since I've updated this blog!   As some of you will be already aware, Hythe Parkway will be appearing in the latest issue of Model Rail, July 2011 (No. 158). I've already seen a copy and subscribers should be recieving their copies soon. The Issue will be formally on sale on 16th June. The Article was written and Photographs were taken before the extension was designed and buitl, so that explains the old board being featured. I would rea

Freshwater's Second Outing

A busy last few weeks in the run up to exhibiting the layout at the 2mm Scale Association Expo in Keighley saw the completion of the woodwork, and application of paint to protect it (and cover up my poor joinery skills).   Setting up on the Saturday morning I was pleased to find that I had not left any important bits at home, and everything fitted together as planned. Even though I did not clean any of the track, it ran really well, with just on sticky bit through one of the points to

Callow Lane signalbox - part 3a - furniture

Today I've been doing something I rather enjoy - playing around with various bits of plasticard and making stuff from them. Apart from the signalman's ancient 'comfy chair', the other items were measured from furniture in actual signalboxes, including the W.R. token instrument.   The token instrument (which will apply to the single line section to Coalpit Heath West Junction), will have some representation of electric tokens added after it's been painted.         Finally, as I was t

More work on turnouts today

This trailing crossover was on my bench overnight, and after a wet mornings golf and a lengthy drying out session in the clubhouse drinking large hot coffees modelling time this afternoon was restricted. Still I managed to get all the rails soldered up and tested with a wagon.     Just need to cut the rails to isolate the V's and gap the sleepers, the plan was made by someone else (better than my work) and is on a slight curve. Large radius curves (cannot remember the size) which will allow

A little more modelling

Hello.   Its common knowledge that after a low there is alway a high and I am not different. I have managed to fit in quite a bit of modelling again this weekend!   Firstly Saturday was once again spent in the company of Mark at his workshop and this time it was time to work on the fiddleyard board at the back of the layout which will hold the cassettes. As with the semi-circular end boards the fiddleyard board was supplied as an amazing 'flat pack' from Alan S of 2mm fame and went together

Class 22 - Part 9

It’s been a while since my last posting in which I was having a fairly trying time persuading the Atlas chassis to look like a model of something that has been made in Glasgow rather than the U.S. The news is rather better now, I’ve been gradually ticking things off my list of jobs and the loco is now stripped down and ready to go to the paint shop.     A few more details…   The Bogies     You may remember from my previous posting that I hadn’t been able to get hold of the Wo

Sprung bogie fitted to D16/3

Another Friday night and I finally got the right wheels fitted into my bogie and then the bogie fitted to the loco. The key thing here was that I wanted to bogie to give some guidance to the loco and not just 'go along for the ride'. I was concerned that with my tight curves on the P4 roundy-roundy I would see an unreasonable amount of overhang unless the bogie helped 'pull the front of the loco round'.   First up is a picture of the underside of the footplate, you can see the rubbing plate fo

Photo's to go with the new arrivals

It really goes to show that I shouldn't work in any scale smaller than HOe as either yesterday or today, I managed to dislodge one of handgrips from the D15 and only noticed once I looked at a photo!   So here from the top, the front of the D15:     Next a side view, the switches for the headlights are under the square ventilator in the roof:     Next we have the intermediate coach side view:     The old coaches are about 14 cm long, this one comes in at 20 cm, an increase of be

The day went well..

So back from a bit of an epic journey north to the 2mm Expo hosted by the Keighley Club (thanks for that) , via a rather long winded journey starting at 6:38am not helped by having been out for one too many sherberts the night before and not getting to bed till 3am. But the journey went well with a range of transports to an from the venue. Have to say the Keighley Club space is great, lots of it! and looks out over the KWVR   I now see didn't take as many pictures as I thought I had and

What's been on my workbench lately

Not listed much lately, one of the reasons is that I had a problem with a couple of programs including my camera link, another having new windows fitted to the house (had to tidy up the workroom and stop using for a few days)also sorting out the seedlings in the greenhouse and planting some of them out, but most of all the bench has been full of turnouts for the past 6 or 7 weeks.     EM gauge junction which was built on a gentle curve just to add a couple of complications. "Railroad Tornado: We Fade to Grey"

It all started with this review video:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEfXm6AS7Sk   I'd finished filming the review, and found that the right hand set of buffers - which are all plastic, moulded as part of the bodyshell - had been damaged in transit.   I was not very impressed with this aspect of the model. Whatever your thoughts may be of the moulded handrails, the model is clearly designed to be a cheap and cheerful representation of the new build A1. I could forgive the moulded p

Liliput ZB D15 and new ZB low floor coach...

Of course not long after getting back from Skiing I get sick! Proper, unable to move type, sick... So again not a lot got done. I did manage to build a kit I bought before getting sick, so now I have a PECO great little trains 4 Wheel Coach. A bit crooked because I didn't quite get the underframe right, but on the whole pretty good.   For the rest the garden has taken a lot of my time, and I mean a lot! It's been back breaking work to clear the mess and get it ready for turning the back third

Callow Lane signalbox - part 3

Once Railex was over, I was planning to start work on 'Callow Lane' again, and so I've been doing a bit more work on the signalbox.   The lever frame has been painted and the main structure of the box has been sprayed with a mixture of Humbrol and Precision cream colours. The box will represent one of those Midland examples that got repainted into Western Region chocolate & cream in the 1950s. I will be picking the main structural woodwork out in a chocolate colour in due course. My protot

P4 Class 55 "Deltic" conversion: Fuel tanks and some airbrake pipe support chains - P4 Deltic Pt 12

A brief update: Progress has been a little slow of late, but I’ve been removing material from within the fuel tanks of the Deltic.   First of all I removed some material from the side frames so that when the webbing above the tanks was removed, there was less to drill out... and then clean up with the Swann Morten No. 11 blade (the long thin one). Plenty of material needs removing, but the look is worth it in the end. Next time, I’d remove the inner material (for the speaker) first...

Slag Ladle Wagon - part 6.

Just a quick update on this one. An envelope from RT Models arrived this week with an etch in it to convert the supplied Gibson 6 hole disc wheels to the correct 8 hole flush sided pattern. Here's the etch;     And fitted (but not glued);     A lovely fit, just needed the boss hole tickling slightly with a broach. I may drill the holes through the wheels although they don't really need it.   Now to get on and finish this one.
