Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Dapol tanker mods

Oh here are some of the tanker mods I made. I used a dark plastic one for clarity.         Some bracing on the supports made from plastic strip, brake connections made from micro strip (found out that this melts which is good… but just be careful with it!) Some brake show retaining rods made from 020†brass rod and bracings made from staples drilled through the top of the chassis which will be hidden by the tank. About it really. Maybe need some new wheels and more weight but they

Put In My Place!

How typical is that!! Not updated the Thomas Blog for ages then lots all at once!   Mansfield Exhibition was excellent and the layout got mobbed as usual. It really is nice to watch all the faces of the children playing trains.   What fascinates me is when a few of the children start playing who are autistic and they put their head in a certain position to watch the trains just run by. I wonder just what it is that they are seeing or what it is that they pick up on that they need to see,

Time For a Refresh

I had forgotten I had written a blog about Thomas & Friends!!!   I hadn't really done much on the layout until the end of 2010 start of 2011 where I went round and upgraded the grass to static grass and generally made the layout a little neater for the Mansfield exhibition.   While I was doing it I thought about extending the layout so keeping within my initial reasons for building the layout I went to the Hornby track plans book 11th edition and built the TraKMat extension 3 layout "Th

Another old print from the archive

nevard_110708_BrehouseQ_1p_DSC_2784_BW, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Johnson 1P 0-4-4 No. 58086 eases a rake of vans between the hop store and the main brewhouse on Brewhouse Quay, summer 1957. It's thought that this photo was taken off the Bristol road bridge over the Avon - hence the elevated view.   The eagle eyed will notice the privately owned Sentinel parked next to the wagon turntable that leads to the bottling plant.   Here's a bigger scan of the above http://www.flickr.co

Pic of the Day

nevard_110707_combwich_IMG_0068, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   I haven't done a 'Pic of the Day' for a bit, so here is my attempt to address that.   We all know it's a modified Hornby 8F on my rather wonky 30 year old Combwich, but let's just pretend it's the following....   It's early September 1963, and our intrepid photographer Ivan Locksmith is firing off some Kodachome II on his Leica M2 recording Bath Green Park's 8F No. 48660 shunting in the yard. These engines hardly ever wo

...because the weather changed accordingly several minutes after I took these images at Frankfurt Southern Station on my way home in the afternoon.       Due to PW work on the Frankfurt-Gießen mainline, numerous workings normally scheduled to use this line are being rerouted via Hanau and Nidderau for the next several weeks. The "Mittelhessen-Express" regionals to Treysa and Dillenburg are among them, meaning that 425s can be seen at Frankfurt Southern at present. Here, 425 014 and 016 ar

Turn Left.

Let’s turn left, well perhaps not at present. It seems we have nowhere to go as yet.   .   This area is hopefully going to end up as a freight yard and river dispatch area, leading on through to a sawmill and wood yard. (Built to help hide the filter unit for the pond, more on this later)       This is my grandson marking the underside of the boards so I can attached wood strips to make sure it wont slip.       The branch as nearly finished.

Hello, Its been about two months since i've done anything on the layout due to it being stored while i destroyed and rebuilt a bedroom, that now finished i can start on its new home. The layout has its own legs which are fine but now it's going to be living in the smallest room in the house and because i am still working on electrics and the fiddle yard dragging it out to work on is quite hard. I needed a different approach so that access to the rear of the layout would be easier and came up wit

Esso Tanker train... complete!

So I pretty much kept to my word and finally finished (sort of) a project. The only difference is I haven’t broken it down into stages. Mainly because I don’t really have the time at the moment and I had a bit of a trail of confidence at my local club yesterday.   Anyway here are is the completed product.       This is the full on train including barrier wagons and brake van. All kit built. The 9F is a Hornby Railroad product which about an hour after this photo was taken trie

Naked Lady

The title of this entry is sure to get people looking. Sadly forum management would not approve so you'll have to put up with these photos instead     "Lining by L Goddard, 1981"[/i]. We weren't sure if Larry painted it as well but if he reads this perhaps he may recall?   Now stripped of her clothes the Patriot is booked in for a BR lined green paint job and light weathering with Ian Rathbone later this year. She will emerge as either 45504 "Royal Signals" or 45506 "The Royal Pionee

Tales from the riverbank #2

A quick update tonight, following on from the scenic work over the weekend, the blobs of sand have set nicely into foliage-ish 'clumps' which, with the sand soil toned down and the protruding lumpy bits dry brushed green to represent nettles and the like, will sit nicely among the final layer of static grass.   For now, the sandy protrusions have been drybrushed green 'virtually' to give an idea of what I am looking to do!       To create more of these 'plants', dry sand with a small

Diverse little things..

LO peeps.   Unfortunatley I didn't make the RMWeb day last Saturday. I was intending to attend, but a MRS tour of Kentish Town and Betjeman's Midland was the same day, and I had committed to go on it. I am sorry not to have met up with people again, but the London tour was unique, led by an ex-Kentish shed driver.   I have taken my 1F chassis to pieces ( again)- still not happy with it! Was not running at all smoothly.Luckily I resisted the urge to hurl it at the wall! I was awaiting a ne

Couplings

To ensure consistency of coupling heights throughout the project a small coupling height gauge has been fabricated.   Made out of plasticard, the gauge provides a datum for all couplings from 'top of rail', the pin providing the centre point. To use, a wagon is gently pressed against the gauge and a small depression is left in the surface, this being your datum point, enabling you to drill holes in the correct position.       So with the gauge complete it only seemed right to give it a

Munktells MDR125p 'Speeder' (Part 2)

OK some time has passed since the last update, however some significant work has been achieved on the Speeder.   Obviously painting aside, work has been undertaken on the more final detail parts and under frame and interior. Headlamp lenses, spotlight and wipers are on order from tiny-cars as is a sheet of fine decal film to use with the already completed decal image. Door handles, bonnet handle, towing eye and a small grill remain outstanding to complete.   All up and running (and its qui

Transmondia

Well I returned (reluctantly) from a trip to France on Saturday night. Since then I have attended a wedding, obtained a kitten, got a pretty nasty cold and had all sorts of undue stress at work. I have posted in the overseas modelling section about my X2400 and X2800 projects and wont say any more on these except that I was going to blog about them under the topic of "2 Budds the Wiser" *tumbloeweed blows through my modelling room*   Anyway Whilst in France I managed my first proper trip to Pa

Stanier Workhorse

Mostly to confound Mike and save him from turning blue here is a quick follow up to last night's posting.       48079 rolled majestically out of the SLW paint shops at the weekend sporting her shiny new BR livery following an intermediate repair. As some of you may notice the buffer beams still require a coat of red paint but the apprentice called in sick yesterday.   Enough of the story. In actual fact 48079 is a rather beautifully scratchbuilt P4 model of a Stanier workhorse. It i

More scenic experimentation

Hi all.   To begin with, a slight diversion from modelling, but in the name of research....Tangmere hauling the Dorset Coast Express just after passing Pirbright Junction on the 5th July:     Back to modelling, following on from the previous entry I have constructed a larger test board to try out the method for producing bramble type ground cover. I was happy with the basic principals of using the Steel wool however I felt the Noch leaves were maybe a little on the large side for N. So,

Warship buffer beam detailing

D816 is one of the examples that retained or were refitted with multiple working jumpers. These have been made from a scrap of plastic and some thin wire.   I've also added the odd footstep under one of the buffers. This came from the etch in the Craftsman detailing kit for the Lima Warships (which claims to cover D813-870 - but actually only covers the class 42 unless you ignore all of the class 43's detail differences ).   It needed some modifications to fit, and one of these etches ha

stone me...

Good evening,   Following a partial withdrawal from the modelling scene, tonight saw a return to it, with new found enthusiasm.   Whilst I am working on my 2011 diorama submission, I am using a separate topic to track it, however should you wish to see it, have a look at this   Pete
