Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

ARC/Hanson JHA Part 2: Bogie test prints in frosted ultra detail

The test print arrived last week and I couldn't wait to try it out with Colin's Wheels. Here it is with a white background:       And here it is against black (seems to show up more detail and yes, they are the same wheels!):         I was initially worried about the material (frosted ultra detail) not being strong enough and/or warping but it was gratifying to see that the bogies are nice and strong and totally "true". I added a bit of sprue between the ends of the frames (evident

Oh Dear- no change!

I Can't believe it's been that long ago since I did anything on this.   Sorry I can't give an update as there is none.   The baseboards and legs are made but it's all sitting in the loft, not doing very much.   Time and space have taken priority, so not too sure if I will ever get this past the baseboard stage.   I've moved to a bigger room and seem to have less space!! The OO Wold's-End layout is also in the loft, really need to get that down so I can at least run my OO locos. Need to

Another SECR Brake Composite update

This is the state of play tonight. It's sitting on it's bogies, with the body and underframe mostly complete. The nastiest bit so far was adding the bogie footsteps - the etched brackets were rather small (scale size?) and a bit flimsy. Some then dropped off when trying to bend them to shape and had to be replaced. Soldering the footboards in to place without melting the whitemetal springs needed a steady hand and plenty of patience.   Next step is the brake linkage. I cheated on the bogies an

Quick scenic update...

A quick view of the landscape as it evolves. Not finished yet, more scatter to add then some zappy grass here and there....     It's looking a bit too moorland-y at the moment. Hopefully with some darker green woven in, some trees and hedge it will look more like Leicestershire!! Chris   If not, it'll have to be settle and Carlisle after all

Trains across the Coastal Plains

Evening all!   While ships certainly were ranking high on my photo list, I but also paid a visit to the railway facilities in Cuxhaven during my recent stay there. With the city being located on the non-electrified Lower Elbe Railway, 103.6 kilometres (64 mi) distant from Harburg Station, it is served by "metronom" semi-fast regionals to Hamburg, as well as stopping services to Bremerhaven. The latter are operated by Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser (EVB) under a subsidiary contract

Trefallion - Locos : 517

Well, my Models & Leisure 517 tank engine is now very nearly complete. Just a copper capped chimney to paint, a bunker of coal to add, a complicated bit of lining to do on the cab sides, a couple of whistles and a protective coat of satin varnish and of course a crew to drive it. The chassis is scratch built, the original M&L one was originally put together in my 'OO' days, before I decided to move over to the dark side   The wheels are Alan Gibson P4 ones, and the ouside bearings

ARC/Hanson JHA Part 1: LTF-25 Bogies

I've been working on a little project lately to produce model of an ARC/Hanson JHA (build code JH016D/JH017D). Not wishing to bite off more than I can chew, I've started with the LTF-25 bogie. If I never make the wagon, I can at least make a rake of National Power JMAs by re-bogying the Bachmann HHA (+ a little work) as these use a very similar bogie.   First a little background on the prototype. Each bogie is different and non-symmetrical. One is hand-braked, the other isn't and the secondary

The jigs have arrived

Hi all,   It's been a while since my last entry due to may factors, namely work, a few shows with my DCC demo oh and a wedding later today. NOT mine i may add, but a good friend (congratulations Dave ) and not much has been done on the layout due to this BUT   I now have the jigs, all 6 of them. 3 crossing V's and 3 filing jigs. Many thanks go's to Alan Smith who took some time out of his busy schedual to custom make my jigs for me.   Now for those who are not aware or not had the chnac

Better Luck Next Time?

First of all I must apologise for the lack of pictures tonight. I have finished updating the etch artwork that was the subject of the last post. This has taken a little longer than I thought due to having issues with swelling of my right eye for no particular reason not helped by a misdiagnosis the first time I visited the doctors. After several days off due to pain and problematic vision I got about sorting out the issues identified in the test builds. I included a chassis with a sliding centre

A Whole Load of Holes at Honley Tank!

LNER Toad Ds had a lot of handrails and the BR built version had even more. On the model, each handrail requires two holes. There was not a small number of lamp brackets either, an absolute minimum of six in early days and I lost count for the BR version – (I’m only building one of those so I will count again when I get round to detailing it)       Why do I know there are so many holes? – because I’ve been drilling the little blighters! And fitting the handrails. Each vehicle has at

The story begins ...

A little while ago, when I was trying to figure out WHY I never got very far into any modelling project before stalling, I realised it was because my heart wasn't really in any of them. After nearly 30 years of pretending to be interested in all things LMS, it suddenly dawned on me that actually I WASN'T.   What interested me was the pre-Grouping period; and the challenge of modelling it in N.   Was it even POSSIBLE to model the pre-Grouping in N, I asked myself.   Well, there was only one

My Idea for a new layout...

Hello! I've been planning a new layout for quite some time now and I'm hoping to document the construction of it on RMWeb- I might also need some encouragement along the way- I welcome constructive criticism since I am an absoloute beginner. The Layout Plan will follow shortly as an AnyRail document and it is to be called Lord's Bridge goods. Expect more updates soon!

P4 Class 55 "Deltic" conversion: Cab details and some bodywork colour - P4 Deltic Pt 15

Dear all, given that I’ve not reported much of late, nor achieved all that much to be honest... there’s quite a bit to be done outside of modelling at the moment, so life is, as usual, taking priority. However, despite this some progress has been made.   The bogies were separated again, and the wheel rims masked... and sides treated to an airbrushed coat of weathered black... and then some brakedust mixed with track dirt was dusted over this. The bogie towers have had their copper pick

Home brew handheld controller (DC)

Preamble Since I rewired my layout I have provided for two controllers to be used. Once the extension is built the fiddle yard will be up to 8ft away from the main operating position. To make operations easier I have introduced "cab control" where a train leaving the fiddle yard is under the control of the "main" operators controller. A train travelling to the fiddle yard will be under the control of the fiddle yard operators hand held controller. switching from one controller to the other

More work on Callow Lane signalbox

A bit more progress since the previous blog entry, nearly ready for the interior illumination and the roof...   Bit more weathering of the boards on the exterior walkway, plus the handrails to be added:   Just glued the two 'omnibus' circuit phones on the wall where the signalman is standing. A noticeboard also to be added above the Train Register desk:

First entry in yonks

Serious problems in getting motivated with the layout. I've run trains and built stock since the last entry, but done nothing on the railway. There are a few thing I am not happy with. For a start the turn into the station is too tight. It should have been 3' but is closer to 2'6". The section at the far end suffers from changes in temperature, leading to railjoiners un coupling, hence derailments, this need to be more solid. Not happy with my ballasting, looks OK for a modern layout, but not ti

Barmby Moor

Hi,   My N gauge layout is based on Barmby Moor in Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire near Retford. It is an extremely simple layout, I will post a track plan later, it will basically have a tunnel at the left end and a level crossing in the middle and disappear into trees and will follow a road (The old Great North Road) which runs over the bridge, and behind the trees will be a housing estate. it will be set in modern day Britain, (loads of 91's and DVT's and HST's) with a similar timetab

Ropley - Oil Store part 3

Hi all.   Just a couple of photos of progress the oil store building. I've completed the 3 main brick sections of wall and I'm happy with the effect using the printed brickwork, although I may yet go back and produce another one as I'm not sure the folds are good enough. Really they should have been scored with a brand new knife blade, but we'll see what they look like once they are touched in with paint and this version has been varnished to seal everything!       Cheers!   Tom.

Taking stock (2)

I bought this Dapol (ex Airfix) kit whilst on holiday last year, Finally got around to building it.   Built as Dapol intended apart from the couplings here it is painted and weathered.         Almost 12 months has passed since I built the Dapol Lomac kit. I have been thinking (ouch!) about some sort of load for it Dapol make a JCB kit which is one option I had but I baulked at the price for what it is. In the end I picked up this Fordson tractor for a couple of quid at an expo and u

SECR brake composite progress

6 hours in to the build of this Roxey SECR brake composite and I've got a basic bodyshell.   No massive problems - the biggest issue was soldering the droplights in straight. The only deviation I've made from the kit so far is to file out the window frame on the centre birdcage window. These had been changed from opening to fixed windows by the 1940s.

First time lucky an all that

Evenin all, thought id start up a blog thingy of the bits and peices im working on so here goes:   Main project at the mo is the super detailed deltic im working on, I always thought i should have a go at detailing one up properly and after reading Jon 020's posts and chatting with Mr Hanson at Burton on Trent i bit the bullet and forked out for the superb extreme etches ( minus the cantrail grilles, not brave enough for them yet!) I was going to take pics as i went but i kind of got carri

Tulis Hoppers

Been doin' some modelling... A couple of Tulis PAA Hoppers. Very nice kits too. The resin is cast particularly well. They're filled with lead so should have no problems staying on the track. Now Weston's gone to the convalescent home I'm starting to think about progressing Clevedon. May put the boards up at the weekend and have a good look at things. I've a couple of weeks off coming up and a little modelling time will be required. Also sprayed up the bubble car roof. Body next.

Back to the Big Bagnall

After something of a hiatus, I've returned to the Bagnall which has now reached the rolling chassis stage. Having replaced the slidebars with a set which actually reach the motion brackets and adapted the motion brackets so that there is actually something for the slide bars to attach to. The slidebars are made from some of the fret which held the frames, some nice, chunky - but probably still underscale - nickel silver. I think the modifications to the original kit design are now complete!

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
