Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Many More Minerals

- Click images to enlarge -   Just a quick post to show I actually get things painted! The Stephen Harris minerals I have been working on are nearing completion, with some finer weathering to add at a later date. 24081 still soldiers on and has now become part of a game of "Where's Wally?" on other 2mm layouts, I'm sure you'll all get fed up of the sight of it soon

Camerton, the location

For those who do not know the area well, I thought I would add a little more background on Camerton. First, a link to the station area in Google Maps. Turn on the Map Labels layer to see the roads and their names. Red Hill crosses the site of the bridge at the west end of the track plan. Bridge Pl Rd runs from west to east across the map and over the bridge at the surviving east end. The four bungalows along Bridge Pl. Rd. are built on the trackbed in the station area, the station platform and b

What can I do on here?

I have been playing about with the Hornby Elite and Railmaster and thought it would be a great way to operate Wold's-End.   I have now removed the traverser and added an extension which I intially thought would be a nice long fiddle yard.   Having now fitted the board and laid the track I'm thinking I could actually use the last 400mm as a hidden fiddle yard and just use a loco lift or DCC concepts storage MPD to swap locos. The area which connects up to Wold's-End can have some scenic trea

Callow Lane signal box - fixing the roof

I posted on a status update yesterday, that I had lost a component, that pinged off my workbench and through a conveniently-placed wormhole to Tharg, the home world of the Zillons.   That component was one of the finials on the roof, which had already been glued in place.   Repairing it wasn't going to be the problem, but finding it was impossible. It is still out there, in the wormhole, hopefully giving pleasure to Midland Railway-modelling Zillons...   Anyway, after a false start last ni

My first site survey visit

I intend to build my first Pre-Grouping layout to depict Shalford Junction in about 1920. All three of the major pre-grouping constituent companies of the Southern railway ran their trains over the same metals here, taking advantage of the narrow Wey valley to get through the North Downs just outside Guildford, and this makes it an ideal location for my purposes. So I went to Guildford last weekend, and I had a good wander around in the general area of the Junction to get the feel of the place a

The new plan

Ok here is current masterplan for the new WCML layout...     The layout will be built with 3 levels. The top level is the red track and will consist of the station and depot. The blue and green lines are the up and down main lines. With this layout I want to recreate a 4 track section of the WCML. The slow lines feed into hidden storage sidings whilst the fast lines go straight through. As with my previous layouts I want to incorprate different scenic areas of the WCML rather than model on

Stop!...Carry on.

As the wagon builds come to a close and I still continue to struggle to find any company willing to sell me the necessary items (Headlamps) from their detail accessories ranges to finish the MDR125p, and what with the summer(!) I wanted something to do that I could pick up and put down.   So after browsing some of the historical Swedish Railway sites I stumbled upon a photograph taken in Osterport of this great signal and signal box/shed. So with photo and a whole set of standards and drawing

Warship weathering

Not much progress recently, with work, holiday and most of my spare time spent on my challenge entry. I have made a start on weathering the Warship.     This is the result of several thin coats of varnish with a hint of dirty brown/grey added. I've also copied some of the oil/diesel on the underframe panels from a photo of the real 816, along with the dirty patch at the very top of the yellow end which all Warships seemed to get.

Rubber Duck Part 2

So finally I have gotten round to finishing (I beleive) the add on work to my Mucky Duck (or Rubber Duck as my partner beleives them to be called!).   In addition to the things I described in my previous blog. I have since lowered the central spring on the pony truck (and not replaced wth coiled copper wire it as I felt it look adequate enough once it had been lowered). Added stop cocks to the heating pipes. I have replaced the flimsy bended rod going to the cab with brass rod and finally open

Friday night doing VR

I picked-up some more Spirit Design laser etch coach kits the other week at the Caulfield show. With the ability to come home at lunch time, and with the early burst of spring, I was able to get the undercoat and 1st top coat of "VR Passanger Car Red" on. Tonite I manged to get 2 of them, 1 x ZLP bogie brake van and 1 x CW guards van, mostly put together. I will need to order some bogies soon. the next fiddley bit will be the roof's. And it looks like I'll have a new T class to haul th

Bure Valley Railway

The Bure Valley Railway is a 15" gauge miniature railway, built on trackbed of the old standard gauge branch line from Wroxham to Aylsham. Here's a few photos from last summer, there's plenty more in my Bure Valley Railway Set on Flickr.

More Unfinished Projects

Things continue with the siphons. I have the second test etches and the previous corrections have turned out a pair of decent (IMO) kits. The other items that I added to the sheet second time around remain to be built because I am now out of top hat bearings. An order is into the association shop but I needed something else to do.   What I thought would be some quick wagons turn out to take rather more effort. I bought a few Mathieson Models wagons at the 2010 Expo in kit form to paint up with

Come up and see my etchings

Just a quick update today. The deflectors arrived last week and one is assembled. Mods need to be done as the Duke's footplate is further forward than a Brit. Other issue is that CTMB don't supply the handrail knobs, good job I have some in stock.   Better news today was a text from Pete Harvey, etched goodies on the way that will make my Duke unique, well until he does his too.   More to follow

GC long car painted and I Materialise Prime Grey Gateshead body.

I've managed to find time to prep and paint the GC car, as the Prime Grey material is a resin, preparation is vey easy, fronts needed a bit of filling and sanding but very little in comparison with either frosted detail or WSF.   Sides needed priming and a brush over with a fibreglass pencil, then BR totem plates added from 10 thou plasticard, and yess they did bend them over the beading on the real thing, looking pretty rough. Totems and nos by Fox. Inside is sprayed a mid brown, glazing to b

late August update

Greetings. I thought I would post a picture which shows the slight progress made this week:     As you can see, I have rewheeled some olf Farish 4-wheelers to run on easitrac, and added some simple eye and hooks to couple them closer. Not ideal using these 1:148 relics, but an easy way of getting a rake together quickly - and they do look rather nice! Also in the background you will notice that the curved siding now has a loading dock temporarily placed. The exact use of this bit of trac

Midland Elegance but with the Dexterity of a Hobbit

nevard_110823_BQ_IMG_0960_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Part bull: 40564 was one of the very last of the elegant ex-Midland Class 2P 4-4-0 locomotives to run on the 'The Dorset', it being finally withdrawn in 1962. In latter years, it would be frequently used on the 11.30 'Beer Express' from the Marriott, Dent and Foster Brewery in Bath down to Bournemouth West. On a bright morning in 1960, the train is captured departing Brewhouse Quay for its holiday resort destination freshly loa

Revitalised wagons

Inspired by Mark's (46444) blog re his wagons from old Airfix bodies, here are my takes on the same subjects.   First up the D1927 ex LMS 3 plank. The body started life as a Bachmann one. I made mine up in early BR livery. It is a fitted version. I was inspired by a 3mm model in MRJ some years ago. It was made while on holiday in France and I've never got round to fitting buffers! The chassis is Parkside, as is the container load. Livery is unpainted wood, with body Ironwork painted BR bauxit

Western detailer update plus other stuff

Hi,   an update on the Western model. Ive now extended one end of the model by approx. 2.5mm, and have now filled all the joins with filler. I have only done one end so far, as this can allow to iron any problems that may happen whilst extending the model. The Heljan front skirting is now almost ready for fitement, but I have now run into a problem that has plagued the Heljan model, and that is the clearance between the skirting and the bogie. Now im pondering if I have to extend the chassis a

A few LMS wagons and a Ruston Bucyrus 19-RB

Over the weekend I picked up two very cheap Airfix/Dapol wagons. Both of these had LMS origins and as I had two Ratio 10ft RCH underframes in my spares box I thought they'd make a nice couple of projects. So off with the original chassis' and the wagon bodies were put in a plastic bag with copious amounts of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner and the paint speedily stripped off in less than an hour.   First up is the Dapol LMS three plank which I believe is based on a D1927 wagon. I think Mainline and

End of an era

Well its offical the Heatherburn is no more. As mentioned elsewhere I am starting a new layout soon but to make way for it something has to go. Had things been different the Heatherburn would have now been finished and giving me the enjoyment of opperating my stock instead of being mothballed and overgrown for the past couple of years. The outside section is still intact and will be for a while yet but inside the garage is a different story. Thankfully I have managed to reclaim the pointwork by

Fiddly Bits and Clangers

Sorry I’ve not posted recently but family visits have taken priority. Not only that but the boredom caused by my decision to block-build five brake vans has lowered my normal desire to be in the workshop; therefore, not much progress.   The “fiddly bits” of the title are the brake assemblies for these brake vans. I think I said earlier that the BR built version of the Toad Ds carried totally different brakes to those built by the LNER; very long brake shoes for the latter but double shoes for

Trigger Happy

A little update regarding my RSU woes: I got hold of aforementioned Carr's solder paste and have successfully constructed a couple of RCH wagon underframes without the problems encountered previously. It amazes me how little solder paste is required to produce a solid joint. My only issue now is the dispensing of the paste from the syringe. Even the most gentle momentary squeezing, it seems, will produce a string of the stuff oozing out of the nozzle after I put it down. I've taken to leaving it

A cheery pic for a dull old day

nevard_110822_BQ_IMG_0942_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. Looking across the Avon towards the Marriott, Dent & Foster Brewery in Bath, Johnson 1P 0-4-4 No. 58086 is spotted shunting on what would appear to be a lovely summer's day. Note in the distance the little privately owned Sentinel 'Mendip' which can be seen resting in front of the grainstore.   Reality; in the UK today it's the height of summer supposedly, but as most are aware, it's a dull, wet old day and more like somethi

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
