Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Progress report No.1!

At last! I've finally got round to updating this- I'll post some photos later today since the cameras currently charging! I've managed to build the base boards and lay the track and am currently in the process of ballasting.

Ropley - Barry Slip

Morning all!   Just a quick photo to show work on the Barry Slip is nearing completion! Just the guard rails to add. Amazingly everything runs through it without de-railing Not sure how I managed that!     Cheers,   Tom.

Publicity Photo

nevard_110903_BQ_IMG_1087pete_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   This morning's rose tinted load of old tosh......   This colour publicity shot was taken around 1964 of Sentinel 'Mendip' involved in a major cask movement during the change over from wood to metal casks at the Marriott, Dent & Foster Brewery in Bath. The gentleman posing behind one the casks is thought to be Lord Marriott de Shenley, one the leading lights at the brewery. A note on the transleeve says 'Ektachrome X,

GWR Twin Railcar pt1

One of they most important items of stock for Cheddar will be the twin GW railcar no35/36   Working from drawings in MRJ no5, and with a method based on that used by the late Monty Wells (MRJ no6) the aim is to chop 3 Lima models into the twin set (then to build a Comet coach kit for the centre coach).   The first step is the drawings, unfortunatly for some reason MRJ decided to put the drawings for no35/37 and 36/38 across a page joint (no33 and the roofs however were on a single page). Super Deltic project

Right then, after a couple of weeks away off modelling and and with missus gone back for a while ive embarked on something new. My deltic is slowly progressing through the paint shop, so at a bit of a loose and and filled with ideas from a EE drawing of a 'super deltic' i had a look around to see what i could do. Reading the notes, it was to have 2 turbo charged deltic 18 engines rated at 2300 hp each and with an overall (estimated) weight of 117 tons it would have been an extremely poweful ma

lonesome pines

Greetings. Over the last few days I have been experimenting with making pine trees using sea moss and scatter. I have not used this material before, but it seemed to be good for this small scale. I made up some grey slurry from PVA, polyfilla and grey acrylic paint for the bark coating, and used an idea I've seen somewhere about pushing soft wire up through the trunk to give it strength and allow it to be straightened safely. I needed to try to create some pines for theembankment and the hil

Wonderful wagons?

Having posted a while back in Modelling Questions, Hints and Tips about Peco's Wonderful Wagon kits, I received a whole ream of replies saying that I would do better not to bother wasting my time with the kit. Were they right? Was I about to waste time and money (both scarce resources to a student!) on something that would vaguely resemble a wagon if viewed short-sightedly through frosted glass on a foggy morning? Would the sprung buffers work? Would I melt the axleboxes? Read on, if you dare...

Ropley - Remodelling.

Afternoon all!   Having been re-united with the basebaord for Ropley for the next 8 days, a few jobs needed doing I've been putting off for a while. The first was addressing the yard area. Originally I used foam board as a base, mainly in the hope of reducing noise, but unfortunately it wasn't up to the task of maintaining the desired shape and had sagged in a couple of places between its supports. So, off it came:     and in it's place has been fitted a piece of ply instead, a much more

Deflecting Attention

The deflectors might be all soldered up, but they have to come apart again!   looking at some photos last night mainly of the cylinders and cam boxes I glanced upwards and it struck me like being hit over the head with a slice of lemon wrapped around a gold brick ........   The deflector handrail is a single piece, not the two part affair that you get with the Brits   When I can summon up the effort the shorter lower handrails have to be unsoldered and removed, one of the holes filled wit

New view and a little digression....

nevard_110831_BQ_IMG_1073_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Here's a view of Brewhouse Quay which has only been possible for a day or two since the exit to the extra fiddle yard was created. A short telephoto effect makes an interesting slightly compressed view showing off the lightweight track and various ground textures between the rails and around the yard. As soon as one views 90 degrees to the light source, all sorts of interesting things start to happen texture-wise - the lighting

The Ultimate Shed Pt 4 - The project awakes...

Welcome (back) to part 4 of my Class 66 project...   The last entry was about 9 months ago (http://www.rmweb.co....he-under-belly/) and in that time a whole lot of life has happened, and a fun, energising and exciting new project, scale and prototype has inspired me (http://ejklr.blogspot.com).   But for some reason I found myself picking up the dusty Class 66 this evening and getting further than just a casual inspection of the work completed so far...   Actually if I'm honest I suspect I

Adventures in Woodwork

I'm planning the woodwork this weekend so I know how much I need to buy. with an idea of a track plan I'm working out where to drill for droppers and point motors whilst trying to make sure that no bracing will be where a hole needs to be, want to get it right before glueing and screwing takes place. advice i have been given is to use 9mm ply. not sure what to use as brace though. don't want it too heavy also toying with foam board edged with wood. Need to chat to my carpenter now (hint)

Recent updates!

Well, I'm going to test out my Ivatt tonight before painting those bits and pieces. I really need some HMRS tranfers to get her initally completed so I can start weatherting!   Anyway whilst you wait for the finish line. Here are some updates.   Firstly. I have been asked to weather a tatty old (and rechassised) 66xx for a friend of mine. In the end I figured a total repaint was necessary. I think I was justified. Now to touch up the paint work get those numbers painted (and a new sets of to

Nerves of steel

My latest wagon, a Farish BDA with a few acrylic paints a touch of weathering powder slopped on. The stantions are prototypically wonky, honest! As usual the close up photo reveals some parts that need refining - the powders have collected too heavily into some the gaps and need toning down, for a start. Otherwise I'm pretty happy.   It's coupled to one of my OCAs - has anybody had any success in making steel coil loads in the scale?

P4 Class 55 "Deltic" conversion: (hopefully not) An end..?

Well, here goes nothing.., or rather what I’d hoped to be “something”. This is a posting that I didn’t really want to post... but it’ll close things out for a while. The photo below shows my model of Nimbus in as a complete state as she’s likely to get... for the time being... or maybe longer. This weekend, we had no "family going out" plans, so we stayed in... and I had some time to devote to railway modelling. I decided that the time had come to practice and attack the BR blue finish that

Fix and Patch - more on maw seed ballasting

Mixing and pasting track ballast currently looms large and I am attaching details of the procedure that works for me. I prefer the small poppy seeds to gritty mineral sands. I use wallpaper paste as the adhesive. It should offer less resistance than PVA should there be a change of plan or track repairs needed.   I use simple tools, a small plastic bowl (ex Christma Pudding basin), stainless steel spatula and a small screw driver:     I use a heavy duty wallpaper paste which has been ch

Nearly done photo call

The five brake vans are almost ready for painting; just the Alex Jackson couplings to fit. These will be soldered to a ‘flat-U’ brass bracket held to the vehicle by the central 8BA screw that holds the three main sections together. This will allow them to be removed easily when ever the vehicles are working away from home on layouts that use three-links rather than Alex’ coupling. To ensure that the correct couplings go back in the correct position on the correct wagon when they get home again

Trees - Part 3!

Hi all!   Continuing to refine the tree building method, here's the latest attempt. This time I've tried to match the tree at the start of the line along the top of the embankment at the Western end of Ropley.         It needs a little trim here and there, and I might add a little more tuft to the top too! I used some Anita Decor Foliage I found in the supplies this time rather than the WS turf to try and give a better match for this particular tree. I don't think its turned out too

The Postman Cometh

So the much hinted at etched valve chest covers from Pete Harvey of PH Designs arrived on Saturday, I've folded one up as a test and rested it on top of the Golden Arrow resin version for comparison.     Looks like Pete got them spot on, there's even a half etched lip at the rear of the lower edge to allow the cover to sit on the top of the cylinder body to give a slight overhang as the prototype   Big thanks to Pete for offering to do these without me asking, a real credit to Pete and t

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
